  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of rotifer fed the different diets in high density culture on larval flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. Potifer was enriched with enrichment supplements, Marine ${\alpha}\;and\;{\omega}-yeast$ for 6 hours after being cultured with freshwater Chlorella for 18 hours during high density culture before it was fed to larval flounder. And rotifer was culutured with marine Chlorella and freshwater Chlorella for 24 hours during semi-continuous high density culture before it was fed to larval flounder. Culture tanks(21 working volum) set for rotifer culture in a water bath($28{\circ}C$) were continuously supplied with oxygen gas. The content of n-3 HUFA to fatty acids in rotifer(dry weight ${\%}$) enriched with Marine ${\alpha}$ for 6 hours and cultures with marine Chlorella for 24 hours were higher than that in rotifer enriched with ${\omega}-yeast$ for 6 hours or cultured with freshwater Chlorella for 24 hours. The growth and survival rates of larval flounder fed on rotifer enriched with Marine ${\alpha}$ for 6 hours and cultured with marine Chlorella for 24 hours were higher than those of larval flounder fed on rotifer enriched with ${\omega}-yeast$ for 6 hours or cultured with freshwater Chlorella for 24 hours. And the content of n-3 HUFA of larval flounder fed on rotifer enriched with Marine ${\alpha}$ for 6 hours was higher than that of larval flounder fed on other rotifers, The results from this study indicated that rotifer culture with marine Chiorelia would be suitable for the high density culture and effective diet for the growth of larval flounder.

  • This study was to determine the extent of bacteria contamination and resistance to various antibiotics used commonly in microalgal culture. Seven different dose levels of chloramphenicol, dihydrostreptomycin sulphate, neomycin, penicillin G, streptomycin sulphate, penicillin G + streptomycin sulphate, and penicillin G + streptomycin sulphate + chloramphenicol were added to each culture of microalgae. The lethal effects on microalgae and bacteria were the highest in chloramphenicol and the lowest in penicillin G. The axenic culture of bacillariophyceae and dinophyceae was more difficult than that of chlorophyceae and haptophyceae because of their complicate external morphology. The efficient antibiotics and their concentrations for axenic cultures varied with microalgal species. The optimum quantity for antibiotic treatments were 2,000 ppm of dihydrostreptomycin for Chlorella ellipsoidea, neomycin 500 ppm of Isochrysis galbana and Heterosigma ahashiwo, hloramphenicol 500 ppm of Cyclotella didymus, and dihydrostreptomycin sulphate and neomycin 6,000 ppm of Thalassiosira allenii.

  • The Marine Safety Culture Index (MSCI) was developed in the year 2018 for objectively assessing the public safety culture levels and for incorporating it as data to spread knowledge regarding the marine safety culture. The method for calculating the safety culture index should include issues that may affect the safety culture and should consist of appropriate attributes for estimating the current status. In addition, continuous verification and supplementation are required for addressing social and economic changes. In this study, to determine whether the questionnaire designed by marine experts reflects the people's interests and needs, we analyzed 915 marine safety proposals. Text mining was employed for analyzing the unstructured data of the marine safety proposals, and network analysis and topic modeling were subsequently performed. Analysis of the marine safety proposals was centered on attributes such as education, public relations, safety rules, awareness, skilled workers, and systems. Eighteen questions were modified and supplemented for reflecting the marine safety proposals, and reliability of the revised questions was analyzed. Furthermore, compared to the previous year, the questionnaire's internal consistency was improved upon and was rated at a high value of 0.895. It is expected that by employing the derived marine safety culture index and incorporating the improved questionnaire that reflects the requirements of marine experts and the people, the improved questionnaire will contribute to the establishment of policies for spreading knowledge regarding the marine safety culture.

  • Marine sponges are a rich source of highly diversified bioactive compounds. These medicinally valuable molecules represent extreme physiological and ecological functions in sponges, more presumably involving in the resistance to the feeding by other marine organisms like fish and fouling by barnacles, bacteria, fungi, etc. This feature of attaining resistance made sponges as successful poriferans that possess an impressive array of biological properties ranging from antimicrobial to anticancerous activities. The diversified bioactive principle of sponges might be due to their spacio-temporal distribution and although, the gateway for exploiting the sponges for isolating these distinct, potential molecules is open, suitable technical and methodological approaches are yet to be implemented in order to bring the sponges as successful pharmaceutical leads in the field of marine biotechnology. Despite of the identified difficulties of marine sponge research from past few decades, one should concentrate not only on the basic and applied technical/methodological considerations, but also on the novel strategies like in vitro sponge cell, fragment and whole sponge culture; sponge symbiont cell culture; in situ and ex situ sponge cultivation; and sponge bioreactors and metagenomic approaches, for the successful exploitation of marine sponges towards the novelty in sponge biotechnology. The present review narrates the pros and cons of the nowadays-marine sponge research by focusing on the suggestive ecobiotechnological approaches, based on the latest studies for feasible ecological exploitation and biotechnological application of sponges from the sea.
