Assessment of Potential Natural Attenuation of Arsenic by Geological Media During Managed Aquifer Recharge (대수층 함양관리에 있어서 지질매질에 의한 비소 자연저감 가능성 평가)

  • Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) is a promising water management strategy for securing stable water resources to overcome water shortage and water quality deterioration caused by global environmental changes. A MAR demonstration site was selected at Imgok-ri, Sangju-si, Korea, based on screening for the frequency of drought events and local water supply situations. The abundant groundwater discharging from a nearby abandoned coal mine is one of the potential recharge water sources for the MAR implementation. However, it has elevated levels of arsenic (~12 ㎍/L). In this study, the potential of the natural attenuation of arsenic by the field geological media was investigated using batch and column experiments. The adsorption and desorption parameters were obtained for two drill core samples (GM1; 21.8~22.8 m and GM2; 26.0~27.8 m depth) recovered from the potentially water-conducting fracture-zones in the injection well. The effluent arsenic concentrations were monitored during the continuous flow of the mine drainage water through the columns packed with the core samples. GM2 removed about 60% of arsenic in the influent (0.1 mg-As/L) while GM1 removed about 20%. The results suggest that natural attenuation is an acitive process occurring during the MAR operation, potentially lowering the arsenic level in the mine drainage water below the regulatory standard for drinking water. This study hence demonstrates that using the mine drainage water as the recharge water source is a viable option at the MAR demonstration site.

Status of Marine Sand Mining and Assessment System in Korea (우리나라 바다골재채취 및 협의제도 현황 평가)

  • This study evaluated current status of marine sand mining and related assessment systems in Korea for supporting effective policy development. The estimated total deposit of sand was ca. 10 billion $m^3$, while the estimated minable amount was ca. 5.5 billion $m^3$, in which marine sand accounted for 21%. The proportion of marine sand to the total mined aggregates has steadily increased by 15% in 1992 to 28% in 2002, but recently slightly decreased. Marine sand mining is regulated under a consultation system on the coastal development according to the "Marine Environmental Management Act". During 2002-2009, a total of 184 million $m^3$ of marine sand was mined, and the annual amount ranged from 17,440,000-33,698,000 $m^3$ the coastal area accounted for 64.5% and the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) 35.5%. In the coastal area, the major area supplying the marine sand was Gyeonggi Bay (>62%) followed by some southwestern coastal areas. The South and the West EEZ explained 23.9% and 11.6% of the total mined sand. The extent of marine sand mining in Korea was evaluated to be greater compared with other countries. Large-scale concentrated and repeated sand mining can damage environmental changes and ecology with long-term accumulated impacts.

A Study on Setting up Conservation Areas through Habitat Value Assessment of Developing Area (개발예정지역에서의 서식지 가치평가를 통한 보전지역 설정에 관한 연구)

  • For both a healthy environment and sustainable development, we frame a habitat assessment method, concerning biodiversity and physical characteristics. With the method, we set up and extract conservation areas from Peace Valley Resort Development Areas which can function as habitats. Absolute and relative assessment items which are the size of area, habitation of species with conservation value, distribution of communities, functions of habitats, ratio of non-native plants, connectivity of habitats, vegetation layers of forests and age of forests, and water systems are considered on newly extracted conservation areas, and the habitat value assessment was calculated on the items in a 3-point scale. By comparing and examining 3 existing proposals for extracted conservation areas, we assess existing proposals, make an alternative proposal, and try to verify the possibility of applicability to extracted conservation areas. Proposal A and C must not be adopted since almost all conservation areas would be developed in the proposals. Proposal B, consisting of 53% development areas and 47% non-development areas, does not have enough development areas, so high density building arrangements should be encouraged in order to preserve conservation areas. Therefore, proposal B would be the best in ecological terms among the 3 proposals, if 3 conditions are considered : 1) new extracted conservation areas should be conserved; 2) 10~15m wide green-zones on both sides of the water system, which can play a role as ecological corridors, should be considered in development areas; 3) building arrangement should not interrupt the ecological corridors.

A Study on Frequency Spectrum Allocation for the Next-Generation Terrestrial Broadcasting Service (차세대 지상파 방송을 위한 주파수 배분 연구)

  • Increasing demand for realistic media and improvement of transmission and device techniques accelerate ultra-high definition(UHD) service realization. In Korea, the cable TV broadcasting companies are planning to commercialize in Apr. 2014. For the terrestrial TV broadcasting service, technical issues are considered for the specification of UHD broadcasting system. However, the frequency bands and the system bandwidth for the terrestrial UHD broadcasting system have not been decided. In this paper, we propose required spectrum bandwidth for the next-generation terrestrial broadcasting service considering source coding, error correcting codes and modulation techniques. Also, we propose frequency management plan for terrestrial UHD broadcasting system in which we divide all parts of the country into 9 frequency zones and allocate 4 frequency band to each frequency zone considering single frequency network (SFN).

The Age and Growth of Marbled Flounder Pseudopleuronectes yokohamae in the Coastal Waters of East Sea off Pohang (동해 포항 연안 문치가자미(Pseudopleuronectes yokohamae)의 연령과 성장)

  • The age and growth of marbled flounder Pseudopleuronectes yokohamae in coastal waters of the East Sea of Korea off Pohang were determined, by evaluating monthly samples of commercial catches, caught by gill nets and longlines from February 2013 to January 2014. New annuli from annually in P. yokohamae otoliths, and the boundary between the opaque and translucent zones forms from March to May. The relationships between total length (TL) and total weight (TW) were $TW=0.009TL^{3.128}$ ($R^2=0.969$) for females and $TW=0.008TL^{3.150}$ ($R^2=0.964$) for males. The TLs at the time of annulus formation, back-calculated from the otolith-length relationship by reference to the von Bertalanffy growth curves, were $L_t=52.63$ ($1-{\exp}^{(-0.231(t+0.033))}$) for females and $L_t=36.22$ ($1-{\exp}^{(-0.400(t+0.117))}$) for males. Commencing at the age of 3 years, females grew faster than males (P<0.05).

A Comparative Study on the Development Characteristic of Parks and Green Systems between Korea and Japan (한국과 일본 녹지체계의 발전 특성에 대한 연구)

  • Japan has been tried to integrate Western planning theories into its parks and green systems in the past. However this effect has been regarded unsuccessful. One of reasons for this is that the green systems have been treated as an urban facility, instead as systems. Another reason has to deal with greenbelt's stationary and reservation characteristics that make difficulty to respond timely to the rapid urbanization. The parks and green systems in Korea was introduced in 1990 and began to be promoted fully with the 'Parte and Green Master Plan' established in 2005. However, due to its short history, incomplete aspects exist in its philosophy and methods for promoting the system. Based on these experiences, the current green zone plans in Japan considers the green structure as an independent institution and amenity plan, not a tool of urban planning, that can be a medium for realization of urban visions. And main characteristics of this approach are 1) classifying the green structure into four categories in order to respond to urban forms and purposes, 2) pursuing confirmity with urban planning, and 3) executing the landscape plan based upon core green areas. From reviews upon experiences of Japan as well as considerations on demands and conditions of green systems in Korea, we proposed the following five new strategies for the construction of the urban parte and green system in Korea. They are 1) to develop urban parks and green systems into a genre of urban development improving the quality and local competitiveness of cities rather than a means of urban planning; 2) to form the integrated structure of urban green zones; 3) to transform the urban parte and green systems into practical systems as the centers of localities; 4) to raise criteria for planning and execution plans for effective implementations of the urban parte and green systems, and 5) to provide specific guidelines for the construction of urban parks and green systems through organizing research groups or specialists.

Environmental Characteristics and Nature-friendly Planning Strategies for an Urban Stream - The Case of Chuncheon's Gongji Stream - (도시하천의 환경특성과 친자연적 계획전략 - 춘천시 공지천을 대상으로 -)

  • This study analyzed characteristics of natural and human environments in Chuncheon's Gongji stream, and suggested nature-friendly planning strategies for self-purification of water quality, biodiversity improvement and conservative waterfront recreation. The environmental analysis included streambed structures, floodplain soils, water quality, vegetation, wildlife, and human facilities. Natural colonization of vegetation for the middle section of the study stream was obstructed by a straightened concrete revetment of baseflow channel, and vehicle movement and concrete parking lots across the floodplain. These human disturbances also deteriorated the naturalness of the stream landscape and limited habitation of bird species. However, natural sedimented wetlands in half of the channel width for the lower section of the stream contributed to a desirable vegetational landscape and greater bird occurrence. Based on BOD measurements, water quality of the stream fell under class $II{\sim}III$ of the stream water-quality standard, but it was worse around sewage outlets due to incomplete sewage collection especially during the dry season. Dominant fish species included typical inhabitants of good water-quality streams that are tolerant of adverse habitat changes. Nature-friendly planning strategies were established based on analysis of the environmental characteristics. They focused on not merely spatial zoning and layout divided into four zones - preservation, partial preservation, conservation and use -, but close-to-nature channel revetment techniques, natural water-purification facilities, biotope diversification, and water-friendly recreation and circulation. Strategies pursued both renewal of stream naturalness and hydraulic stability of streamflow by minimizing transformation of natural channel micro-topography and biotope, and by reflecting natural traces of streambed structures such as revetment scour and sedimentation.

Estimation of the Traffic Flow in the Korea Coastal Waterway by Computer Simulation (우리나라 연안의 해상교통관제시스템 설치를 위한 기초연구 시뮬레이션에 의한 우리나라 연안의 해상교통량 추정)

  • From the point of view of safety of life and property at sea and the protection of the marine environment, the Vessel Traffic Management System along the Korea coastal waterway is inevitably introduced. But the establishing priority per area must be evaluated under the restricted budget. In this case, the estimated traffic flow has a major effect on priority evaluation. In the former paper , an algorithm was proposed for estimating the trip distribution between each pair of zones such as harbours and straits. This paper aims to formulate a simulation model for estimating the dynamic traffic flow per area in the Korea coastal waterway. The model consists of the algorithm constrined by the statistical movement of ships and the observed data, the regression analysis and the traffic network evaluations. The processed results of traffic flow except fishing vessel are summarized as follows ; 1) In 2000, the traffic congestions per area are estimated, in proportion of ship's number (tonnage), as Busan area 22.3%(44.5%), Yeosu area 19.8%(11.2%), Wando-Jeju area18.1%(6.8%), Mokpo area 14.9%(9.9%), Gunsan area 9.1%(9.3%), Inchon area 8.1%(7.7%), Pohang area 5.5%(8.5%), and Donghae area 2.2%(2.1%). 2) For example in Busan area, the increment of traffic volume per annum is estimated 4, 102 ships (23 million tons) and the traffic flow in 2000 is evaluated 158, 793 ships (687 million tons). 3) consequently, the increment of traffic volume in Busan area is found the largest and followed by Yeosu, Wando-Jeju area. Also, the traffic flow per area in 2000 has the same order.

Estimation of Reservoir Discharge to Support TMDL Management in the Geum River Basin (금강수계 오염총량관리를 고려한 저수지 방류량산정)

  • This study estimates adequate discharge to meet the specified target water quality concentration using the pollutant load of the Geum river basin given in TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load) report. During the 1st phase, BOD is chosen as a target water quality constituent under regulation of the Ministry of Environment in Korea. BOD, TN, and TP loads estimated based on the TMDL and provincial zones were re-distributed for 10 major tributaries, and the remaining areas along the main river are classified as 15 incremental flow areas. Water quality modeling was conducted using Qual2E for the low flow period of a year (i.e. $March{\sim}April$). The results of the model simulation showed that about 30 cms from the Daechung dam would be sufficient to satisfy the target water quality in the Geum river downstream of the Daechung multipurpose Dam.

Monitoring of Gab-river boundary using Aerial Photo (항공사진을 이용한 갑천 주변지역 모니터링)

  • In this study, the landuse pattern at the Gab river is analyzed using time-series aerial images. This study area is divided by two zones like as inland and floodplain. To begin with, in inland, the landuse area of items such as residential, road, industrial, public facilities is increased by following the urbanization. On the other hand, the area of the other items such as agricultural, forest and river is decreased. Also, the inclination of those two groups is reversed around 1988. Form the results, it is clarified that the Gab river is urbanized around 1988. In floodplain, the area of river is decreased as time goes by. This result means that the area of landuse factors such as level-upped riverside land, bridge, head work is increased conversely. Also, the proportion of the water to the river considering the hydrologic factor like rainfall is increased as time goes by. Overall, it is concluded that aerial image can be applied to get a landuse information that is needed in river management and planning.
