Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an education program for AIDS prevention on knowledge about AIDS and attitudes towards AIDS/people with AIDS among male-high school students. Methods: A research design used in this study was a randomized and non-synchronized control group pre-and-post test. The participants were 560 male students from five high schools in Seoul and Gyeonggi province. In each school two classes were randomly assigned to each the experimental or control group. The contents of the education program for AIDS prevention consisted of six parts with a total of 50 minutes. The data were analyzed using t-test and chi-square test with SPSS WIN program version 13.0. Results: There were significant differences in knowledge and attitudes between experimental and control groups. The experimental group showed higher scores in knowledge and more positive attitudes than the control group. Conclusion: The education program was effective in increasing positive attitudes towards AIDS/people with AIDS among male high school students. Further application of the program with female students is needed before the results of the study can be generalized.
In this study, according to the staking method of the fire hose in the indoor hydrant system, the number of kinks when the fire hose is deployed was measured and analyzed to examine how the staking method of the fire hose affects the kink when the hose is deployed. The fire hose staking method was classified into three types: donut-type, accordion-type, and hose hanger-type, and the walking speed and number of kinks were measured by repeating the experiment 5 times for male and female students. The results of the study are as follows. (1) Among the three types of fire hose staking methods, the donut-type staking method had an average of 92 times for male students and 86 times for female students on average. (2) The accordion-type and hose hanger-type staking methods showed similar results with an average of one or two kinks for both male and female students. (3) Regardless of the staking method, it was found that in general, male students with high walking speed had more kinking than female students with slow walking speed.
Purpose: This study was conducted to identify predictors of the stage of change for smoking cessation of male university students on the basis of the Transtheoretical model (TTM). Methods: The 388 current smokers or exsmokers who agreed to participate were recruited from three areas in Korea from August 2 to September 5, 2006. Data was analyzed using a SPSS program for descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and multiple logistic regression. Results: Most subjects (76.8%) were current smokers. According to stages of change, there were statistically significant differences in self efficacy, smoking temptation, decisional balance (cons, pros), and processes of change. The predictors of transition from contemplation to preparation were behavioral and experiential processes. The predictors of transition from preparation to action were pros of smoking and experiential process. The predictors of transition from action to maintenance were cons of smoking and behavioral process. Conclusion: Specific nursing interventions based on stages of change need to be developed for smoking cessation of male university students.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the regional differences in food preference among college students participating in a nutrition education program via internet. The subjects were 1672 college students (male: 762, female: 910) and divided into 4 regional groups. A survey using a self-administered questionnaire was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire on taste and food preferences. Data was collected via internet or by mail. Prevalence of the food preferences among regional groups was examined using SPSS statistical package. Food preferences were significantly associated with sex and region. Female students in Chungcheong and Kyungsang areas showed significantly higher preference of the hot taste compared to Seoul and Kyunggi areas. Female students in Seoul, Kyunggi and Chungcheong areas showed significantly higher preference of the boiled bean rice compared to the Kyungsang area. The preference for Kimchi stew of female students in Seoul and Kyunggi was significantly higher than those in Chungcheong and Kyngsang areas. Male students in the Chungcheong area showed significantly higher Preferences of the Young radish kimchi, while female students in this area showed significantly higher preference of the Radish kimchi compared to other areas. The preference for roasted laver of female students in Seoul, Kyunggi and Kyungsang areas was significantly higher compared to the Chungcheong area. The preference for fried chicken of male students in Seoul was significantly higher than that in other areas. The preference for bean sprouts and season bonnet bellflower of male students in Seoul, Chungcheong and Kyungsang areas were significantly higher compared to the Kyunggi area. This study was performed to investigate the preference and consumption pattern on milk and milk products of middle and high school students. The subjects were 1,195 students(590 middle school and 605 high school students) living in Geochang area. The survey was conducted by using a self-administered questionnaire in November, 2004. The results were as follows. Sixty-three point four percent of the subjects liked milk, and the main reason was 'accelerate growth and development'(55.4%). Preferred tastes of milk were 'savory taste'(35.4%) and 'sweet taste' (29.9%). Banana milk, chocolate milk, strawberry milk, ice cream, yoplait and yogurt were highly preferred. General preference for different kinds of milk was significantly higher in high school students and male students than in middle school students and female ones. With regard to preference for dairy products, cream (p<0.01) and butter(p<0.05) was preferred more by male students than by female ones, ice cream(p<0.05), yoplait (p<0.05) more by female students than male ones. The score of milk intake frequency was 3.84(3-4 times a week) out of 5 points(7 times a week) for white milk, and that of chocolate milk was 1.98, banana milk 1.96, strawberry milk 1.72, coffee milk 1.65, showing that these products were drank less then once a week. In addition, the white milk intake frequency was significantly higher in middle school students and male students than in high school students and female students(p<0.001). Preference for milk showed a positive correlation with preference for dairy products (r=0.543, P<0.001) and frequency of milk intake(r=0.429, P<0.001). This suggests that those who prefer milk high tend to prefer dairy products and to show high milk intake frequency. In addition, milk intake frequency was in a high positive correlation with dairy product intake frequency(r=0.648, P<0.001).
This study aimed to examine the health-related lifestyle habits and eating behaviors according to gender, ethnicity, and residence type of university students in Yanbian, China. Self-administered questionnaires were collected from 302 university students. Of the male students, 12.1% and 42.0% were in the underweight and overweight groups, respectively, and of the female subjects, 21.3% and 16.3%, were in those respective groups. More male than female students preferred the overweight body somatotype. In contrast, about 49.4% of female students were hoping to be underweight, and female students had more obvious difficulties with body somatotype perception, whereas their exercise frequency and time spent exercising per day were much less than those of male students. More Chinese than Korean-Chinese subjects exhibited regular eating habits, which included eating at the same time everyday and at the same frequency per day; these habits were, accompanied by generally healthier lifestyle habits regarding regularity of activity and exercise time. Self-boarding students had a significantly higher BMI ($23.7{\pm}5.1kg/m^2$) and were more likely to be overweight (43.5%) as compared to students who lived in a dormitory or with family. Salty taste was preferred by Chinese students more than Korean-Chinese students, and greasy taste was preferred by Korean-Chinese students as compared with Chinese students. This study found that inherent and environmental factors are related with the dietary behaviors of university students in Yanbian, China. Further studies are required to elucidate the structural elements of family life and the sociocultural factors associated with dietary behaviors in Yanbian.
Background: Adolescent risk behaviors are of concern because they are dangerous in themselves and have negative influences on adult health. Objectives: This study explored six health risk behaviors of a sample representing the adolescent population in Jeju. Methods: Frequency and percentage of risk behaviors were calculated. Additionally, the chi-square test was used to explore whether differences in experimentation with risk behaviors exist relative to gender and schooling levels. Results: There were six major findings in this study: (a) a lower rate of lifetime and current cigarette use among female students compared to male students, (b) a substantial portion of heavy drinkers, (c) a higher rate of lifetime drug use among female students than among male students, (d) a higher prevalence of suicide ideation among female students than among male students, (e) substantial percentages of students who did not usually wear seatbelts, motorcycle helmets, or bicycle helmets, and (f) a substantial portion of students who were not involved in vigorous physical activities. Conclusions: Since a substantial portion of adolescents have been involved with diverse risk behaviors, it is urgent to implement effective intervention strategies to reduce the rates of these behaviors.
The purpose of this study was to test the mediating effects of self-esteem and empathy on university students' motivation for parenthood and their definition of parenthood. Participants were 1,492 students (male 581, female 898) from 19 universities throughout Korea. Results were: (1) The definition of parenthood was explained for motivation of parenthood (male $7{\sim}27%$, female $4{\sim}24%$) and empathy was explained for all the subfactors of motivation of parenthood except 'motivation for traditional norms' (male $4{\sim}16%$, female $2{\sim}13%$). Self-esteem was not explained as motivation of parenthood. (2) There was no mediating effect from self-esteem on motivation for parenthood or the definition of parenthood in any of the students. (3) There was a partial mediating effect of empathy on motivation of parenthood and the definition of parenthood. In male students, there were mediating effects in 'motivation for strengthening biological family ties', 'altruistic emotional motivation', and 'motivation for deepening marital bonds and perpetuating one's self'. In female students, there were mediating effects in 'motivation for strengthening biological family ties' and 'motivation for deepening marital bonds and perpetuating one's self'.

Purpose: This study examined the effects of Testicular Self-Examination (TSE) small-group education on knowledge, self-efficacy, and performance intention in male college students. Method: A non-equivalent pre-post test of quasi-experimental design was used. Out of 74 male college students selected by convenient sampling, 37 students were assigned to the experimental group and were given TSE small-group education. A 60-minute program consisted of lecture, demonstration, practice, discussion, and Q&A. Result: With an initial homogeneity between the two group, scores of knowledge about testicular cancer (p<.001), self-efficacy for TSE (p<.001), and performance intention of TSE (p<.01) of the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the control group after the intervention. Conclusion: Small group education for TSE was effective in improving knowledge about testicular cancer, self-efficacy for TSE, and intention to perform TSE. Thus, this education program is considered to be useful for testicular cancer prevention and reproductive health promotion in male college students.
The purpose of this study is to examine the environmental worldviews of middle school students. An instrument to survey environmental worldviews consists two components; 'Human and Environment', and 'Human Behaviors and Environmental Problems' The two components are three environmental worldviews as follows: 'Technocentrism', 'Ecocentrism', 'and Environmentally Sound and Sustainable Development(ESSD)'Subjects were 551 middle school students in metropolitan area and rural district(male: 285, female: 266). Most of middle school students had the environmental worldview of the ESSD. More female students had a tendency ESSD worldview than males. More male students had the positive Technocentrism than females. More middle school students in metropolitan area had ecocentrism than those in rural district. Understandings of students' environmental worldviews will be helpful to work out teaching and learning strategies in environmental education.
