The aim of this study was to assess University students' consumption pattern of Korean rice cakes and to analyze the preference of Korean rice cakes by their demographic backgrounds. The results of this study will be useful information for systematic development and wide distribution of Korean rice cake as a traditional Korean food. A self completed survey of 392 University students in Seoul was undertaken and detailed information was collected. The survey questionnaire consisted of three parts including demographic backgrounds, student's consumption pattern and preference of Korean rice cakes by type. Approximately half of the students were male (52.6%) with the average age of 21.1 years old. Most of the respondents (92.3%) were from nuclear families. The consumption frequency rate showed that 38.8% students had Korean rice cake once or twice a month followed by once a week (29.8%), once per six months (21.7%), and once per two months (8.2%). Ingeolmi received the highest preference score (4.15), whereas Duteopteok had the lowest score (0.18). The correlation coefficient for paired samples between students' preference of Korean rice cake and their knowledge of them was 0.827, showing statistically strong positive correlation between them.
Objects: The purpose of this case-control study was done to examine the relationship between stroke prevalence and the anthropometric indices(body mass index(BMI), modified Broca's method(Broca's index), waist circumference(WC), waist-hip ratio(WHR)), dyslipidemia, past medical history(heart disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus(DM)), life-style factors(smoking, drinking) in Korean adults. Methods : The study group consisted of neurologically confirmed 116 stroke patients as the case group and 116 non-stroke patients as control group. Obesity were defined as $BMI{\geq}25kg/m^2,\;Broca's\;index{\geq}30%$, WC >94cm in male and WC >80cm in female, $WHR{\geq}0.9$ in male and $WHR{\geq}0.8$ in female. Oyslipidemia were defined as total $cholesterol{\geq}200mg/dl,\;triglyceride{\geq}200mg/dl,\;HDL-cholesterol {\leq}35mg/dl,\;LDL-cholesterol{\geq}160mg/dl$. Information on life-style factors and past medical history was obtained from personal interview. The analysis of the data was done by means of chi-square test(Pearson's chi-square test, Fisher's exact test) and student t-test. Results: The results were as follow. In the study group: Hypertension had a 4:05 odds ratio, Broca's $index{\geq}30%$ had a 1.98 odds ratio, WC >94cm in male had a 2.17 odds ratio, WC >80cm in female had a 2.80 odds ratio, $WHR{\geq}0.9$ in male had a 4.66 odds ratio, $WHR{\geq}0.8$ in female had a 5.35 odds ratio, but heart disease, DM, life-style factors, serum lipid and 8MI had no direct relationship with odds ratio(nonsignificant). By student t-test, risk factors for stroke were found to be total cholesterol(p=0,025), LDL-cholesterol(p=0.013), WC(p=0.000) and WHR(p=0.000). Conclusions: This study suggests that people should be advised to control hyperlitension, hyperlipidemia and obesity since these carry a risk of stroke.

Objectives : This study was conducted to examine the smoking behaviors and the relationship between smoking and other health behaviors among medical students. Methods : A self-administrated questionnaire was administered to a sample of 1,775 students from four medical schools between April and May 2003. Due to the small number of female smokers, the characteristics of smoking behaviors were analyzed only for males. Results : A total of 1,367 students (920 males and 447 females) completed the questionnaires, with an overall response rate of 77.7%. The smoking rates for males and females were 31.5, and 2.2%, respectively. Among the male smokers, 70.7% smoked daily, and 39.0% smoked one pack or more per day. Male students on medical course were more likely to smoke daily, and one pack or more per day, than those on premedical course. Male daily smokers desired to quit smoking less than occasional smokers, and 65.0% of male daily smokers were not ready to quit compared with 37.8% of the occasional smokers. Among the male daily smokers, 29.6% were severely nicotine dependent. The most common reason for not to quit smoking among male smokers was 'no alternative stress coping method' (44.4%), followed by 'lack of will power' (25.4%), and 'no need to quit' (19.4%). Compared with male non-smokers, male smokers were more likely to drink alcohol more often and in larger amounts, take coffee more often, eat breakfast less regularly, and be overweight or obese. Conclusions : The results of this study suggest that many male medical students were serious smokers, especially those on medical course. It is necessary to install a smoking prevention program for pre-medical students, provide effective smoking cessation methods for smokers, teach positive stress coping methods, and make the school environment suitable for coping with stress.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between school life stress, self-esteem and health promoting behaviors(HPB) of specialized high school students. Data were collected by questionnaires from 337 specialized high school students. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. The results are as follows. The mean scores of male in HPB and self-esteem, were higher than that of female, however the mean score of female in school life stress was higher than that of male. The gender(p<.001), grade(p<.05), and health status(p<.001) affected the HPB significantly. The school life stress showed a significantly negative correlation with HPB, but the self-esteem showed a significantly positive correlation with HPB. Result of multiple regression analysis showed that the two factors, that were school life stress and self-esteem, affected the HPB significantly(p<.001) and made a 48% prediction. In conclusion, this study suggests that school life stress and self-esteem are significant influencing factors on HPB among specialized high school students. The effective HPB program and systematic health education are needed to increase the HPB of specialized high school student.
To investigate the relationship between eating behavior and the prevalence of adolescents drug abuse and smoking, this survey was conducted among 349 male students(mean age ; 16.0 $\pm$0.9yrs) at technical high schools in Kyunggi-Do. It was shown that 58.7% of total subjects were smoking and 11.2% were abusing drugs. Drug abusers weighed Less than non-abusers especially, student smokers were 2.7kg lighter than non-smokers despite the same height. Although parents' education showed no relationship with drug abuse, educational level of student smokers' fathers was significantly lower than that of non-smokers' fathers. Drug abusers and smokers showed significantly higher incidence of runaway from home, absence from school without notice, and parents' divorce than non-abusers and non-smokers. Drugs abused were sleeping pills(n=20), bonds and butane gas(n=9), marijuana(n=3), tranquilizer(n=3), morphine and cocaine(n=2), and pep pills like amphetamine(n=2) 76.9% of the drug abusers had their first experience in junior high school and 81% of the smokers stared smoking as early as in junior high school. Also, 44% of the smokers reported that they smoke daily. The drug abusers tended to have more irregular eating habits than the non-abusers. The smokers showed irregular mealtime, ate either too fast or too slow, and especially, often skipped lunch or dinner. The drug abusers and smokers took little vegetable in their meals and often ate bread or noodles instead of rice for staples. In addition, they preferred taste to nutrition when they had meals. The smokers tended to ingest smaller amount of calcium source such as milk or dinner food and fish with bone although they consume more volume of total foods than the non-smokers. All subjects took less in calorie, calcium, iron, vitamin A, vitamin E, riboflavin, and folic acid than the Recommended Dietary Allowance Those findings suggest that drug abuse and smoking cause bad eating habits that influence unbalanced nutritional state. Therefore, nutrition education should be provided to the adolescents so that they can recognize the disadvantages of drug and smoking and its relation to dietary relation. Objectives: The study was performed to examine the dietary behaviors and life stress of middle school students in the Gyeonggi area. Methods: A total of 580 middle school students (295 males, 285 females) in the Gyeonggi area participated in the study between July and August in 2011. The study was a questionnaire-based survey that included dietary habits, dietary behaviors, and life stress. Results: For dietary habits, the score for drinking milk was higher in male students than in female students, whereas the score for eating fruits was higher in female students compared to male students. There were significant differences in foods eaten and preferred under stress between male and female students. Male students showed significantly less changes in the number of meals, amount of meal intake, number of snacks, snack intake, frequency of overeating, and appetite during stress than female students. Life stress score of students largely came from academic factors, and female students showed higher stress levels in personal and surrounding environment factors than male students. Life stress score was significantly lower in students with high and moderate levels of dietary habits than in students with a low level of dietary habits. Total score for dietary habits and scores for eating adequate amounts of foods for each meal, considering a combination of food groups at each meal and eating green and orange vegetables, were significantly negatively correlated with life stress score. Life stress score was significantly negatively correlated with meal regularity and positively with the level of overeating. Conclusions: This study may provide basic information on dietary habits and life stress according to gender and the relationship between dietary behaviors and life stress of middle school students, and it suggests gender-based nutrition education programs to solve undesirable dietary habits and dietary behaviors in students with higher stress.
The purpose of this study is to provide the necessarily basic data of the ideal growth of the students by investigating the effect of the student's stress due to the parent's achievement pressure. The sample of this study are In students consisting of 51 boys and 49 girls in the 3rd grade classes of "J" middle school located in Siheung city, Kyungki-do. The observed materials are used to investigate the parent's achievement pressure and the level of stress. Based on the observed data, the frequency, correlation, and t-test have been gained. The results are summarized as follows : 1. The perception of the parent's achievement pressure is shown more by the boy's achievement pressure($44.2{\pm}9.9$) than the girl's achievement pressure($39.939{\pm}11.089$), among the high level students. 2. The perception of the parent's achievement pressure is shown more the high($43.0{\pm}10.7$) and middle($42.9{\pm}11.8$) level students than the low($39.7{\pm}8.00$) level students. 3. The stress of male students was high in the Solving Problem stress factor with by the mean of $15.1{\pm}3.7$, and the stress of female students was high in the Self-Control stress factor with the mean of $13.3{\pm}3.9$. 4. The stress of high, middle, low level student was high in the Solution of Matter stress factor with the mean of $14.2{\pm}3.9$. 5. The results were the main cause of the stress than the parent's achievement pressure.
This study was performed to investigate the dietary habit based on residence types of male college students who registered nutrition course for nonmajor. Self reports on dietary habit and one-day dietary records were obtained from 158 male college students in Chungbuk area. The distribution of residence type of male college student was as follows; self-boarding(43.0%), home(41.1%), boarding with meal(12.7%), and others(3.2%). The mean age of subjects were $22.6{\pm}2.5$, and the mean height and weight were $175.0{\pm}5.6cm\;and\;69.1{\pm}9.3kg$, respectively. The dietary habit of male college students considered to be taken more care of, showing indifference to dietary balance, irregularity of meal, and skipping breakfast. One-day dietary records by 24hr recall methods also showed less diverse food intake(mean DVS, 12.7; mean DDS, 3.92). Especially, the students with self boarding residence were more likely not to eat properly, including indifference to dietary balance, irregularity of meal, skipping breakfast, frequent dining-out, high experience of smoking and drinking, and low DVS and DDS. Also the students with self boarding residence seemed not to make a good choice for food, showing high food intake frequency score in canned food, fast food and instant ramyun, while low score in fruit and fishes. More attention should be taken for self-boarding students to recognize the problems in their own dietary behavior, and more practical suggestion to improve their dietary status would be necessary.
Background Reactive oxygen species cause serious damage to the physiological function of tissues. Determination of total antioxidant capacity of skin tissue is one of the determinants of damaged tissue function. Mast cells (MCs) are one of the groups of cells that are invited to the site of injury. The healing process begins with the rapid release of various types of MCs' intermediate factors at the site of injury. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell (BMMSC) production and secretion have been shown to regenerate the skin. The aim of this research was to evaluate the wound-healing and antioxidant effects of BMMSCs per MCs. Methods Fifty-four albino Wistar male rats were divided into three groups: (1) nonsurgery, (2) surgery, and (3) surgery + BMMSCs. Groups 2 and 3 were operated with a 3 × 8 cm flap and in group 3, cell injections (7 × 109 cell injection at the time of surgery) were performed. After days 4, 7, and 15, percentage of the surviving tissue, histological characteristics, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, and amount of malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured in the groups. For results, Graph Pad Prism 8 software was used, and data were analyzed and compared by analysis of variance and Tukey test. Results BMMSCs' application decreased the amount of MDA, increased SOD activity and survival rate of the flaps, and improved the histological characteristics. Conclusion This study revealed the protective effects BMMSCs alongside MCs against oxidative stress on the survival of the flaps. However, for clinical use, more research is needed to determine its benefits.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between dietary fat intake, anthropometric data, blood lipids, C-reactive protein, and adiponectin in Korean male college students. Forty-eight subjects were divided into 2 groups based on dietary fat intake: UERF (under 30% of energy ratio for fat source), AERF (above 30% of energy ratio for fat souce). We collected dietary intake data using 24-hour dietary recall for 3 days. Anthropometric and biochemical parameters were measured by using standard methods. Segmental body composition analysis was carried out using an 8-electrode multifrequency bioelectrical impedance method of body fat estimation. There was no significant difference in anthropometric data and serum lipid profile between UERF and AERF group. Serum C-reactive protein level was significantly higher in the AERF group compared to the UERF group. Although there was no significant difference in serum adiponectin level between UERF and AERF groups, subjects had lower adiponectin levels. Correlation data show that serum adiponectin level was positively correlated with vegetable intake (p < 0.05). In addition, dietary fat intake had a positive correlation with meat (p < 0.01), whereas a negative correlation with grain (p < 0.01), vegetables (p < 0.05), and fish (p < 0.05). These results suggest that the increased fat intake of non-obese Korean male college students is associated with their increased serum C-reactive protein concentration. Therefore, proper guidelines on fat intake and nutrition education are necessary for the prevention and management of metabolic syndromes.
