  • This research focuses on the condition of the coveralls that automobile maintenance workers wear. The objective of this survey is to conduct a thorough analysis on the quality of the coveralls and put forth suggestions for improving their quality. The research data were collected through interviews and the results are as follows. The participants in this research engage in a variety of types of maintenance work including oil changes and overall system checks and they usually wear extra-large-sized coveralls. The coveralls are generally worn during the winter for warmth and the company handles all purchasing and maintenance of the work clothes. Participants mentioned that certain parts of the clothes where they bend and stretch are cumbersome and areas around the knees and arms become easily tainted. They have also reported that although the coveralls are necessary, they are for the most part dissatisfied when it comes to the materials, design, and color. The participants have suggested that new coveralls would help to increase their work efficiency. As a result, it is concluded that the coveralls require much more development to meet the workers' needs and improvements need to be made on the functionality, aesthetics, and symbolic aspects of the design.

  • The primary contributors to the total occupational radiation exposure in operating nuclear power plants are operation and maintenance activities doting refueling outages. The Advanced Power Reactor 1400 (APR1400) includes a number of design improvements and plans to utilize advanced maintenance methods and robotics to minimize the annual collective dose. The major radiation exposure reduction features implemented in APR1400 are a permanent refueling pool seal, quick opening transfer tube blind flange, improved hydrogen peroxide injection at shutdown, improved permanent steam generator work platforms, and more effective temporary shielding. The estimated average annual occupational radiation exposure for APR1400 based on the reference plant experience and an engineering judgment is determined to be in the order of 0.4 man-Sv, which is well within the design goal of 1 man-Sv. The basis of this average annual occupational radiation exposure estimation is an eighteen (18) month fuel cycle with maintenance performed to steam generators and reactor coolant pumps during refueling outage. The outage duration is assumed to be 28 days. The outage work is to be performed on a 24 hour per day basis, seven (7) days a week with overlapping twelve (12) hour work shifts. The occupational radiation exposure for APR1400 is also determined by an alternate method which consists of estimating radiation exposures expected for the major activities during the refueling outage. The major outage activities that cause the majority of the total radiation exposure during refueling outage such as fuel handling, reactor coolant pump maintenance, steam generator inspection and maintenance, reactor vessel head area maintenance, decontamination, and ICI & instrumentation maintenance activities are evaluated at a task level. The calculated value using this method is in close agreement with the value of 0.4 man-Sv, that has been determined based on the experience aid engineering judgement. Therefore, with the As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) advanced design features incorporated in the design, APR1400 design is to meet its design goal with sufficient margin, that is, more than a factor of two (2), if operated on art eighteen (18) month fuel cycle.

  • BIM(Building Information Modeling) technologies are the most effective for the maintenance of infrastructures because they provide information sharing througout the life-cycle of structures and support close communication between different project stages. Systematic and well-organized data play a fundamental role for the effective maintenance of subway tunnel. In this paper, 3D information models for maintenance of BIM-based subway tunnel structures are developed. Standard classifications for the maintenance and construction information classification system were adopted. A classification system based on construction information classification system was built considering procedures of maintenance work. It provides optimization and standardization of the work flow for the maintenance of subway structures by applying information modeling processes instead of the current maintenance practices. It can effectively reduces the life cycle cost and time for the maintenance. The proposed system can be utilized for the maintenance history management to enhance current maintenance system.

  • For effective building maintenance, the collection and management of various maintenance date such as work history information and material information is required. Despite the introduction of information management technologies and systems to reduce the amount of maintenance work of buildings, which have become larger and more complex, the maintenance information is not being utilized properly. As an alternative, research on the introduction and utilization of BIM is being conducted continuously. However, the BIM models generated at the design phase are not utilized in practice due to a lack of architectural maintenance information. This study proposed a COBie document prototype to support BIM-based smart maintenance tasks performed by building managers. In order to formalize various types of maintenance work procedures, a BIM-based maintenance process model is presented in two categories: inspection and maintenance. Among the BIM attribute data of the BIM model generated at the design phase, the parameters corresponding to the maintenance necessary information for each basic process are derived. Based on this, we proposed a COBie document prototype consisting of seven spreadsheets. The results of a case study confirmed that the KBIMS library-based BIM model created at the design phase without the maintenance information can be used at the maintenance phase.
