  • The Al etching was studied employing negative ions generated in the downstream $Cl_2$ plasma. In order to etch the Al film practically on an insulator covered electrode coupled with RF power, reduction of the negative self bias voltage (Vdc) was examined using a magnetic filter which trapped electrons. Addition of $SF_6$ and $H_2$ to a $Cl_2/BCl_3$ mixture reduced significantly Vdc.

  • A DC current sensor is disclosed in which two pairs of saturable cores are provided so as enclose a conductor carrying a direct current to be measured. On each of the saturable cores, a bias winding, a feedback winding and an output winding are wound. Circuit for detection of an asymmetry in the magnetization current, generated by a reference alternating voltage, in a signal-conditioner. The reference alternating voltage is fed to the respective series circuits such that no resultant induction current is induced in the modulating current. The voltages over the resistor form input signals for two peak value detectors, the strength of the output signal of which represents the degree of asymmetry of magnetization current. This paper describes the development a DC current sensor and its signal-conditioner.

  • We have investigated the effect of temperature and bias current on the stability of the inverse spin-switch effect in Permalloy(Py)/Nb/Permalloy pseudo spin-valves. The inverse spin-switch operates between two orientations of the ferromagnetic moments of Py layers; parallel (ON) and antiparallel-domain (OFF) state. Measuring time scans of the resistance changes between the ON and OFF state, ${\Delta}R_{ON-OFF}$, while alternating magnetic fields between the two states at various temperatures and bias currents, revealed that enhancement of ${\Delta}R_{ON-OFF}$ is a key factor to achieve successful operation of superconducting spin switch.

  • A shielded magnetoresistive (SMR) head which has double MR films and linearizes each other has been designed and studied by applying the transmission-line model. We have analyzed the yoke efficiency, bias efficiency and read efficiency of the SMR head. The read efficiency strongly depends on the height of the sensor and slightly on the other geometric parameters. The yoke and bias efficiencies vary with gap length, insulated layer thickness and relative permeability. A quasi-index reduction in the signal flux is observed when the displacement moves away from the medium.

  • In order to improve the read-out signal waveform, a shielded magnetoresistive (SMR) head has been designed and studied by applying the transmission-line model. The bias and signal field distribution, the voltage output, the harmonic output signal and resistance value of MR element are simulated as functions of bias current and recording displacement. The results show that the SMR head has good linear character with respect to the medium recording signal in high recording frequency of about 2.5 MHz. The amplitude and waveform of reroduction signal have been obviously improved. The saturation effect on the symmetry and amplitude of reproducing output have also been analyzed.

  • The role of magnetic anisotropy of the antiferromagnetic layer on the magnetization process of exchange coupled polycrystalline ferromagnetidantiferromagnetic bilayers is discussed. In order to elucidate the magnetic torque response of Ni-Fe/Mn-Ir bilayers, the single spin ensemble model is newly introduced, taking into account the two-dimensionally random distribution of the magnetic anisotropy axes of the antiferromagnetic grains. The mechanism of the reversible inducement of the exchange anisotropy along desirable directions by field cooling procedure is successfully explained with the new model. Unidirectional anisotropy constant, J$k$, of polycrystalline Ni-Fe/Mn-Ir and Co-Fe/Mn-Ir bilayers is investigated as functions of the chemical composition of both the ferromagnetic layer and the antiferromagnetic layer. The effects of microstructure and surface modification of the antiferromagnetic layer on JK are also discussed. As a notable result, an extra large value of J$k$, which exceeds 0.5 erg/cm$^2$, is obtained for $Co_{70}Fe_{30}Mn_{75}Ir_{25}$ bilayer with the ultra-thin (50${\AA}$∼100${\AA}$) Mn-Ir layer. The exchange anisotropy of $Co_{70}Fe_{30}$ 40 ${\AA}/Mn_{75}Ir_{25}$ 100 ${\AA}$ bilayer is stable for thermal annealing up to $400{^{\circ}C}$, which is sufficiently high for the application of spin valve magnetoresistive devices.

  • Magnetic tunneling transistor (MTT) device using the amorphous n-type Si semiconductor film for base and collector consisting of the [CoFe/NiFe](free layer) and Si(top layer) multilayers was used to study the spin-dependent hot electron magnetocurrent (MC) and tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) at room temperature. A large MC of 40.2 % was observed at the emitter-base bias voltage ( $V_{EB}$ ) of 0.62 V. The increasing emitter hot current and transfer ratio ( $I_{C}$/ $I_{E}$) as $V_{EB}$ are mainly due to a rapid increase of the number of conduction band states in the Si collector. However, above the $V_{EB}$ of 0.62 V, the rapid decrease of MC was observed in amorphous Si-based MTT because of hot electron spin-dependent elastic scattering across CoFe/Si interfaces.

  • The active magnetic bearing (AMB) systems mounted in moving vehicles are exposed to the disturbances due to the base motion, often leading to malfunction or damage as well as inaccurate positioning of the systems. Thus, in the controller design of such AMB systems, robustness to base disturbances becomes an essential requirement. In this study, effective control schemes are proposed for the homo-polar AMB system, which uses permanent magnets for generation of bias magnetic flux, when it is subject to base motion, and its control performance is experimentally evaluated. The base motion of AMB system is modeled as the dynamic disturbances in the gravity and base excitation forces. To effectively compensate for the disturbances, the angle feed-forward controller based on the inverse dynamic model and the acceleration feed-forward controller based on the normalized filtered-X LMS algorithm are proposed. The performance test of the prototype AMB system is carried out, when the system is mounted on rate table. The experimental results show that the performance of the proposed controllers for the AMB system is satisfactory in compensating for the disturbances due to the base motion.

  • Vibration assisted cutting (VAC) is one of the promising methods for precision machining, which has been normally equipped with piezoelectric materials. In this paper, a feasibility of applying magnetostrictive materials to VAC as a cutting device instead of piezoelectric materials was studied. For this, the vibrational characteristics of a magnetostrictive material was investigated with respect to a coil design, a preload, and the effects of a biasing and an exciting magnetic fields. The output strain of a magnetostrictive material is restricted due to an increasing inductive impedance as the exciting frequency increases and the heat of coil, etc. Through the experimental results, it was found that the biasing and the exciting magnetic field affected the output performance significantly but not the preload. In conclusion, the magnetostrictive material could be used only in the low frequency range but not a good candidate for high frequency actuating application.
