  • To estimate free magnetic energy stored in an active region is a key to the quantitative prediction of activity observed on the Sun. This energy is defined as an excess over the potential energy that is the lowest energy taken by a magnetic structure formed in the solar atmosphere including the solar corona. It is, however still difficult to derive the configuration of a coronal magnetic field only by observations, so we have to use some observable quantity to estimate free magnetic energy. Recently, by performing a coordinated series of three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations of an emerging flux tube that transfers intense magnetic flux to the solar atmosphere we have found an universal power-law relation between free magnetic energy and emerged magnetic flux, the latter of which is a possibly observed quantity. We further investigate what causes this relation through a comparison with a model of linear force-free field.

  • In this study, the theory of fluid mechanics and dynamics is used to build a mathematical model for a three-stage flow control valve. The significance of the study is that the mathematical model can easily be used to study the effect of different design parameters on the performance of the valve. The geometry of the valve and the properties of the fluid were used in this study to determine the variation in the performance of the valve when varying the magnetic force on the pilot spool. While a linearization technique is not used to solve the developed model, the solution of the mathematical model is found in the time domain by simulation of the equations using a software package. The results indicate that if the developed mathematical model is solved for the different values of magnetic force, the valve behaves linearly; the valve is thus called the proportional flow control valve.

  • Electro-pneumatic servo valve is an electro-mechanical device which converts electric signal into pneumatic flow rate or pressure. In order to improve the overall performance of pneumatic servo systems, electro-pneumatic servo valves are required, which have fast dynamic characteristic, no air leakage at null, and can be fabricated at a low-cost. The first objective of this research is to design and fabricate a new electro-pneumatic servo valve which satisfies the above-mentioned requirements. In this paper, we has been modeled as a system consisting of coupled electro-mechanic and mechanical subsystems. The appropriateness of the model has been verified by simulation. The simulation model resolves the valve body motion and the solenoid current at high accuracy. Also, we are calculate the displacement of spool and computed results show winding currents, magnetic actuator force, flux density line, displacement, velocity, back EMF, eddy current etc.

  • A finite element model was built for MnBi/${\alpha}$-Fe nanocomposite permanent magnets, and the demagnetization curves of the magnets were simulated by micro-magnetic calculation. The microstructure of the cubic model is composed of 64 irregular grains with an average grain size of 20 nm. With the volume fraction of soft magnetic phase (t vol. %) ranged from 5 to 20 vol. %, both isotropic and anisotropic nanocomposite magnets show typical single-phase permanent magnets behavior in their demagnetization curves, illustrating good intergranular exchange coupling effect between soft and hard magnetic phases. With the increase of volume fraction of soft magnetic phase in both isotropic and anisotropic magnets, the coercive force of the magnets decreases monotonically, while the remanence rises at first to a peak value, then decreases. The optimal values of maximum energy products of isotropic and anisotropic magnets are 84 and $200kJ/m^3$, respectively. Our simulation shows that the MnBi/${\alpha}$-Fe nanocomposite permanent magnets own excellent magnetic properties and therefore good potential for practical applications.

  • In this paper we developed a tactile feedback device using repulsive force of magnets. The force of the tactile feedback device was derived from the Maxwell's stress method by using the concept of magnetic charge. Magnetic repulsive force is linear function with respect to current and nonlinear to displacement. Experimental data shows these characteristics. To compensate the fact that the presented tactile feedback device can not be controlled by close loop control, we developed a simulation model which predicts output displacement and force by using Runge-Kutta method. And, this paper evaluated the presented tactile feedback device and compared it with commercial tactile feedback devices.

  • Magnetostrictive actuators have seen increasing use in fine positioning system because it has many advantages such as friction free, resolution of ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ or nm scale, and powerful output force. Usually, the magnetic circuit of magnetostrictive actuator has components which are flux return path, coil, and magnetostrictive material. It is classified in two types according to existence of the permanent magnet. The magnetic circuit having optimal performances transfer magnetic field which is obtained by providing input current at coil without energy loss. This paper described mathematical model of magnetic circuit for getting design variables. The modeling equation is obtained from the relations between flux and reluctance of the magnetic equivalent circuit. Also, finite element analysis has been used to study the performance of magnetic circuit according to change of design variables such as existence and shape of the permanent magnet, flux return path etc. The modification of dimensions enables us to optimize magnetic circuit.

  • We propose a new miniature air-bearing stage with a moving-magnet slotless linear motor. This stage was developed to achieve the precise positioning required for submicron-level machining and miniaturization by introducing air bearings and a linear motor sufficient for mesoscale precision machine tools. The linear motor contained two permanent magnets and was designed to generate a preload force for the vertical air bearings and a thrust force for the stage movement. The characteristics of the air bearings, which used porous pads, were analyzed with numerical methods, and a magnetic circuit model was derived for the linear motor to calculate the required preload and thrust forces. A prototype of a single-axis miniature stage with dimensions of $120\;(W)\;{\times}\;120\;(L)\;{\times}\;50\;(H)\;mm$ was designed and fabricated, and its performance was examined, including its vertical stiffness, load capacity, thrust force, and positioning resolution.

  • This paper investigates the concept and implementation of an energy harvesting device using a ferrofluid sloshing movement to generate an electromotive force (EMF). Ferrofluids are often applied to energy harvesting devices because they have both magnetic properties and fluidity, and they behave similarly to a soft ferromagnetic substance. In addition, a ferrofluid can change its shape freely and generate an EMF from small vibrations. The existing energy harvesting techniques, for example those using piezoelectric and thermoelectric devices, generate minimal electric power, as low as a few micro-watts. Through flow analysis of ferrofluids and examination of the magnetic circuit characteristics of the resultant electromagnetic system, an energy harvester model based on an electromagnetic field generated by a ferrofluid is developed and proposed. The feasibility of the proposed scheme is demonstrated and its EMF characteristics are discussed based on experimental data.

  • The 4-pole LHSM was composed of the figure-of-eight shaped 3-phase armature windings. DC field windings, and the segmented secondary with the transverse bar track. The motor was designed on the base of the performance characteristic equations and the equivalent circuit model, with the coefficients of the magnetic shape. These coefficients were computed from the analytical expressions and examined from FEM analysis. The magnetic equivalent circuit of 3-D model of LHSM was obtained. and this concept provided the equivalent models for 2-D FEM analysis. Therefore, the airgap field, the lift and thrust force were calculated and compared with the results of magnetic equivalent circuit method.

  • This paper describes an application of sliding mode control to an active magnetic bearing(AMB) system. A sliding mode control is robust to model uncertainties and external disturbances. To ensure the authority of sliding mode control, model parameter uncertainties caused from linearization of electro-magnetic attractive force are analyzed and a domain of parameter uncertainties in which reachability to sliding surface is guaranteed is derived. The validity of the analysis is illustrated along with some simulation examples.
