  • The wavelength variation of a scanned fiber laser is analyzed using quadrature sampling technique. By time delayed sampling of a phase modulated Mach-Zender interferometer, the wavelength information can be precisely determined regardless of the nonlinearity in the Fabry-Perot wavelength filter which scanned the fiber laser. A wavelength readout resolution of ~20 pm was obtained at 2 KHz M-Z modulation frequency, and it was shown that the resolution could be improved in case of using an electro-optic phase modulator.

  • We fabricated a sensor head which consists of spliced different-diameter fiber gratings for discrimination between strain and temperature. Because the fibers were drawn from the same preform, their temperature characteristics were the same but not for strain sensitivities which are inversely proportional to fibers cross-sectional areas. In measurement range of 0-1500$\mu$strain and 20-10$0^{\circ}C$, we could obtain, by using the matrix calculation, the unknown physical quantities within 10% of calculation error compared with the micrometer and thermocouple values. To improve the strain measurement accuracy, we suggest a new, novel method which deploys an unbalanced fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer. This new signal processing technique converts the strain information to interference signal amplitude variation, temperature-independently. we obtained measurement accuracy nearly 80 times better than that obtainable with the conventional optical spectrum analyzer usage.

  • In this paper, 8-channel multiplexer with 100GHz channel spacing is fabricated. The 8-channel multiplexer is fabricated by connecting three cascaded Mach Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) of optical fiber type, and each interferometer has the wavelength interval of 100GHz, 200GHz and 400GHz, respectively. furthermore, to acquire uniform insertion loss, it is fabricated by using Wavelength Flatten Coupler (WFC) in which the variation of insertion loss is low. Especially, the variation of wavelength interval in the output is explicitly simulated as a function of optical path difference, and the wavelength coupling process along with cascaded connection is discussed. $CO_2$ laser to adjust precisely the wavelength. In summary, The prototype composed by eight cascaded MZI has an insertion loss of 2.1dB, the bandwidth of 0.8nm at 5.5dB point, and channel crosstalk of 25dB Furthermore, the loss dependent on polarization is measured as 0.06dB.

  • We report on the development of a fiber optic hydrophone consists of a sensing Michelson interferometer and a compensating Mach-Zehnder interferometer for optical path length compensation. The double interferometer configuration has the following advantages: the hydrophone can be made more small; a laser source with a relatively short coherence length can be used; and the compensating interferometer can be located near the signal processing electronics, far away from the sensing interferometer and noise introduced by reference arm can be greatly reduced. The performance of the hydrophone is evaluated experimentally by immersing the sensing interferometer in a water tank to detect underwater acoustic signals generated by an acoustic wave projector. Experimental results show that over the frequency range of 1 to 4 kHz, the hydrophone has an almost flat response with an average normalized sensitivity of -302 dB re 1/ μ Pa.

  • In this paper, we propose the OADM based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer(MZI) with FBG(fiber Bra-gg grating) in the interferometer arms. The OADM us ing FBG and MZI is able to minimize system and red uce weight. We analyze output\ulcorner characteristics of OAD-M, and present the optimum design data through the computer simulation, and obtain the good experimental results. Also, the proposed OADM is suitable to DWD-M(Dense WDM) system because it has the narrow 1-inewidth.

  • Photonic crystal structures have been received considerable attention due to their high optical sensitivity. One of the techniques to construct their structure is the dip-pen lithography (DPN) process, which requires a nano-scale resolution and high reliability. In this paper, we propose a two dimensional photonic crystal array to improve the sensitivity of optical biosensor and DPN process to realize it. As a result of DPN patterning test, we have observed that the diffusion coefficient of the mercaptohexadecanoic acid (MHA) molecule ink in octanol is much larger than that in acetonitrile. In addition, we have designed and fabricated optical waveguides based on the mach-zehnder interferometer (MZI) for application to biosensors. The waveguides were optimized at a wavelength of 1550 nm and fabricated according to the design rule of 0.45 delta%, which is the difference of refractive index between the core and clad. The MZI optical waveguides were measured of the optical characteristics for the application of biosensor.

  • In this paper, temperature-induced optical phase shifts in single-mode fibers are studied both analytically and experimentally. Temperature sensor using single-mode fiber interferometer is designed and the temperature sensitivity of the sensor system is investigated. This fiber-optic temperature sensor which employs the Mach-Zehnder arrangement is a high sensitivity sensor of phase detection type. In this type, temperature changes are ob-served as a motion of an optical interference fringe pattern. In the measurements using interferometer, one of the important problems is to detect simultaneously the number and direction of fringe displacement resulting from physical perturbations (temperature, pressure, etc.). To realize this, the array detector using multi-mode fiber is designed. By this array detector the number and direction of fringe displacement is Ineasured very conveniently.

  • A pre-amplified semiconductor optical amplifier-Mach-Zehnder interferometer(SOA-MZI) wavelength converter (WC) using a continuous wave-holding beam(CW-HB) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated at 10Gb/s. The proposed scheme achieves not only enhancement of input power dynamic range(IPDR) to over 20dB but also higher Q parameter of about 2 to 3 by no output signal distortion and higher extinction ratio(ER) of about 2dB to 5dB by low noise figure (NF), compared with the bias current control method.
