  • We have studied the sensitivity of four different phase shift measurement schemes with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The input light is considered to be in a coherent state and the detectors are assumed to be ideal with the quantum efficiency of unity. It is shown by direct calculation of the operators corresponding to the measurement schemes that the uncertainty of the phase-shift measurement is limited to the classical one $\frac{1}{\sqrt{m}}$(m is the average number of the photons in the input state) regardless of the phase-shift measurement schemes.

  • In this paper, we propose a new dual optical encryption method for binary data and secret key based on 2-step phase-shifting digital holography for a cryptographic system. Schematically, the proposed optical setup contains two Mach-Zehnder type interferometers. The inner interferometer is used for encrypting the secret key with the common key, while the outer interferometer is used for encrypting the binary data with the same secret key. 2-step phase-shifting digital holograms, which result in the encrypted data, are acquired by moving the PZT mirror with phase step of 0 or ${\pi}/2$ in the reference beam path of the Mach-Zehnder type interferometer. The digital hologram with the encrypted information is a Fourier transform hologram and is recorded on CCD with 256 gray level quantized intensities. Computer experiments show the results to be encryption and decryption carried out with the proposed method. The decryption of binary secret key image and data image is performed successfully.

  • The phase sensitivity of the coincidence detection in one output port of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer is analysed for twin Fock state inputs. Firstly, the ideal detectors with quantum efficiency of unity are assumed for the detection of the output photons. The sensitivity is found out to be independent of the photon number of input light, which means that the Heisenberg limit cannot be reached in the coincidence detection even with ideal detectors. Secondly, the practical detectors with quantum efficiencies less than unity are discussed.

  • A two-photon interference experiment is presented in which an entangled pair of photons generated from a parametric down-conversion was incident on two input ports of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The experiment was carried out using two photon coincidence detection with two detectors at the two output ports of the interferometer. The measured coincidence counts exhibit an interference effect with visibility of 0.75 at simultaneous inputs and 0.38 at inputs with different arrival times according to the degree of photon number entanglement.

  • We propose a new and potentially integrable scheme for the realization of an all-optical binary full adder employing two XOR gates, two AND gates, and one OR gate. The XOR gate is realized using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) based on a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). The AND and OR gates are based on the nonlinear properties of a semiconductor optical amplifier. The proposed scheme is driven by two input data streams and a carry bit from the previous less-significant bit order position. In our proposed design, we achieve extinction ratios for Sum and Carry output signals of 10 dB and 12 dB respectively. Successful operation of the system is demonstrated at 10 Gb/s with return-to-zero modulated signals.

  • Frequency-multiplication technology based on microwave photonic principles can be used to generate microwave and millimeter wave signals with a wide frequency tuning range. However, the existing cascaded external modulation frequency-tupling scheme needs to ensure the phase coherence of the modulated Radio Frequency (RF) signal, while the phase modulation directly limits the frequency tuning range of the external modulation frequency multiplication. In this paper, a novel approach for generating an incoherent frequency 12-tupling signal with cascade modulation is proposed. The structure of cascaded dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulators can generate a frequency 12-tupling signal. The proposed structure uses no filter or phase control of the RF driving signal. Microwave photonic frequency-tupling was realized under incoherent conditions. Software simulations and experiments validated the proposed structure and proved that it can generate frequency 12-tupling microwave signals under incoherent conditions. Both the frequency range and reliability of the frequency-tupling system has been improved by the proposed structure.
