  • Universal Soil Loss Equation(USLE) was developed for the estimation of the annual average soil loss from farm land. But, USLE has been applied in estimation of the sediment yield due to the construction activities in Korea without any calibration for last couple of years. Therefore, applicability and the limitation of the MUSLE(modified USLE), which was developed for the estimation of the sediment yield due to single rainfall event, is examined by application of MUSLE into several construction sites and comparing the estimated sediment yields with the actual ones. It is found that MUSLE could be applied in Korea as long as the concentration time, runoff volume and the peak flow rate are estimated with appropriate methods. Comparisons between the applicability of RUSLE and MUSLE are also carried out.

  • This study aims to predict the amount of soil loss from Mt. Palgong's small basin, by using influence factors derived from related models, including RUSLE and MUSLE models, and verify the validity of the model through a comparative analysis of the predicted values and measured values, and the results are as follows: The amount of soil loss were greatly affected by LS factor. In comparison with the measured value of the amount of total soil loss, the predicted values by the two models (RUSLE and MUSLE), appeared to be higher than those of the measured soil loss. Predicted values by RUSLE were closer to values of measured soil loss than those of MUSLE. However, coefficient of variation of MUSLE were lower, but two model's coefficient of variation in similar partial patterns in the prediction of soil loss. RUSLE and MUSLE, prediction soil loss models, proved to be appropriate for use in small mountainous basin. To improve accuracy of prediction of soil loss models, more effort should be directed to collect more data on rainfall-runoff interaction and continuous studies to find more detailed influence factors to be used in soil loss model such as RUSLE and MUSLE.

  • Field measured sediment yield from an experimental urbanized basin was compared with the predicted sediment yields with RUSLE (Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation), and MUSLE (Modified Universal Soil Loss Equation). The experimental basin is 3.1km2 in area and fifty six percent of the total area had been urbanized. The hydrological data have been measured with T/M at the outlet of the experimental basin. Runoff from the basin and rainfall depth of the basin were measured every minute. Bed load and suspended load were also measured for a given flow rate. Runoff rating curves and sediment rating curve were developed for the last three years. RUSLE showed scattered prediction results but the average of the prediction values was close to the measured one. Meanwhile, MUSLE showed linear correlation between the measured sediment yield and predicted one with high correlation coefficient. But MUSLE predicts high values than the real one. Therefore, adjustment is necessary to apply MUSLE in estimation of sediment yield from the experimental urbanized basin.

  • The coefficient and exponent of the MUSLE(Modified Universal Soil Loss Equation) runoff factor in the SWAT(Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model are 11.8 and 0.56 respectively, which are equally applied to the estimation of soil erosion regardless of land use. they could derive overestimation or underestimation of soil erosion, which can cause problems in the selection of soil erosion-vulnerable area and evaluation of reduction management. However, there are no studies about the estimation of coefficients and exponent for the MUSLE runoff factor by land use and their applicability to the SWAT model. Thus, in order to predict soil erosion and sediment behavior accurately through SWAT model, it is necessary to estimate the coefficient and exponent of the MUSLE runoff factor by land use and evaluate its applicability. In this study, the coefficient and exponent of MUSLE runoff factor by land use were estimated for Gaa-cheon Watershed, and the differences in soil erosion and sediment from SWAT model were analyzed. The coefficient and exponent of runoff factor estimated by this study well reflected the characteristics of soil erosion in domestic highland watershed. Therefore, in order to apply the MUSLE which developed based on observed data of US agricultural basin to the domestic watershed, it is considered that a sufficient modification and supplementation process for the coefficient and exponent of the MUSLE runoff factor depending on land use is necessary. The results of this study can be used as a basic data for selecting soil erosion vulnerable area in the non-point source management areas and establishing and evaluating soil erosion reduction management.

  • This study was carried out to investigate coefficient and exponent of runoff energy in MUSLE for small forest watershed, Hwachoen watershed in Gangwon-do. For 15 rainfall events, runoff volume, peak discharge and sediment yield were measured and these data were used to calculate coefficient and exponent of runoff energy. The results of this study showed that $LS{\bullet}K{\bullet}C{\bullet}P$ factors of MUSLE were affected by slope steepness. The coefficient and exponent of runoff energy were validated with coefficient of efficiency of 0.92 and these values were suggested to 0.002 and 0.81 respectively. The comparison of the coefficients and exponents between Hwacheon and other forest watersheds showed that these values would reflect the effect of forest management within watershed.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand applicabilities of sediment yield estimation technique with observed data in the field accelerated by human activity. Commonly used equations such as Universal Soil Loss Equation and Transport Research Board etc. from foreign country is not validated. And analyzing affecting parameters and understanding limit of each estimation technique is not examined, either. To test the applicabilities of several models, a hot spring development site in Chunahn city, Chungnam province is selected. Sediment yield of catchment is determined using RVSLE, TRB, MUSLE, SLEMA, and Morgan & Finned method and compared to actual measurement. It is found that RUSLE and TRB are overestimated and MUSLE dives a rotatively resonable value.

  • The MUSLE was utilized in this study to estimate soil erosion using daily precipitation which was main influential factor in soil loss estimation. Various scenarios were simulated to evaluate how transition of slope, agricultural products and precipitation could affect soil loss in the field. It was found that slope was the most affecting factor in soil loss estimation. Especially 1.8 times the soil loss was expected with potato at 45% slope compared with codonopsis at same slope with MUSLE model. Fortunately, farmers had planted codonopsis at this slope to reduce soil erosion from this steep slope. As shown in this study, the MUSLE method could be utilized to determine optimum crop type for each field with various slope conditions to minimize soil erosion. This approach utilized in this study could be applied to other agricultural watersheds to evaluate various soil erosion conditions.

  • With the aid of SWAT/GRASS interface, SWAT model was applied to a representative rural watershed and evaluated for its applicability through calibration and verification using observed data. Results of the model application showed that the simulated runoff was in a good agreement with the observed data and indicated reasonable applicability of the model. In predicting sediment yield, however, there were differences between the simulated and the observed values. It seems due to the inaccurate determination of MUSLE factors, better prediction of sediment yield could be achieved by selecting more appropriate MUSLE factors for different land use types. In predicting nutrient loading, the simulation results showed a similar trend to observed data.
