  • Musical genre is indispensible in constructing music information retrieval system, such as music search and classification. In general, the spectral characteristics of a music signal are obtained based on a subband decomposition to represent the relative distribution of the harmonic and the non-harmonic components. In this paper, we investigate the subband decomposition parameters in extracting features, which improves musical genre classification accuracy. In addition, the linear projection methods are studied to reduce the resulting feature dimension. Experiments on the widely used music datasets confirmed that the subband decomposition finer than the widely-adopted octave scale is conducive in improving genre-classification accuracy and showed that the feature-dimension reduction is effective reducing a classifier's computational complexity.

  • Music transcription is extracting pitch (the height of a musical note) and rhythm (the length of a musical note) information from audio file and making a music score. In this paper, we decomposed a waveform into frequency and rhythm components using Non-Negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) and Non-Negative Sparse coding (NNSC) which are often used for source separation and data clustering. And using the subharmonic summation method, fundamental frequency is calculated from the decomposed frequency components. Therefore, the accurate pitch of each score can be estimated. The proposed method successfully performed music transcription with its results superior to those of the conventional methods which used either NMF or NNSC.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the literature on music interventions for youth with intellectual disability. Characteristics of the music intervention, target goal domains, and the quality of statements on intervention contents and rationale were explored. What type of intervention was applied in each target goal domain and how studies differed in terms of the quality of stated rationales depending on the authors' field of study were also analyzed. A total of 20 articles published in KCI journals were identified. The analysis showed the differences in intervention contents depending on the authors' research field and target goal areas. In addition, it was found that only two studies stated an appropriate rationale based on the theory of music therapy and relevant research. Discrepancies on the quality of rationale between researchers with music therapy majors and with non-music therapy majors indicated the importance of the music therapy professionalism in expecting and interpreting the intervention outcomes. These findings highlight the ways in which music intervention studies could be improved to further the field and contribute to the rigor of these interventions for youth with intellectual disability.

  • In this era of globalization, people's knowledge and cultural aesthetics are strongly influenced by the cultures of different countries, and diversified art forms have broken the traditional art framework, so how to stick to the essence of the country's traditional culture and make it inherited has became an important issue that cannot be ignored in the development of music today. Tan Dun, as one of the representative figures of Chinese contemporary music, has brought important inspirations to the development of Chinese music. With bold and free conceptions, innovative personality, unique Chinese tradition and international perspective. With a spirit of breaking down the barriers between tradition and modernity, East and West, and a concept of integrating multiple cultures into one, he has become a unique figure in the world of music. As researchers in composition, not only do we take on the responsibility of passing on Chinese culture, but we also need to explore the future development direction of Chinese music. Therefore, this paper takes Tan Dun's four traditional musical elements of organic music, Buddhist culture, witchcraft beliefs, folk songs and opera in his works and examines how Tan Dun perfectly blends traditional Chinese music culture with contemporary music language. And explore how the domestic traditional culture co-exists with modernity in today's diverse world.

  • Similar melody searching is an operation that finds such melodies similar to a given query melody from a music database. In this paper, we address the development of a system that detects plagiarism based on the similar melody searching. We first Propose a novel similarity model that supports alignment as well as shifting. Also, we suggest a method for indexing the features extracted from each melody, and a method for processing plagiarism detection by using the index. By our plagiarism detection system composers can easily searches for such melodies that are similar to their ones from music databases. Through performance evaluation via a series of experiments, we show the effectiveness of our approach. The results reveal that our approach outperforms the sequential-scan-based one in speed up to around 31 times.

  • In this paper, we propose a new method for music genre classification using spikegram and deep neural network. The human auditory system encodes the input sound in the time and frequency domain in order to maximize the amount of sound information delivered to the brain using minimum energy and resource. Spikegram is a method of analyzing waveform based on the encoding function of auditory system. In the proposed method, we analyze the signal using spikegram and extract a feature vector composed of key information for the genre classification, which is to be used as the input to the neural network. We measure the performance of music genre classification using the GTZAN dataset consisting of 10 music genres, and confirm that the proposed method provides good performance using a low-dimensional feature vector, compared to the current state-of-the-art methods.

  • In this paper, we study how to improve the performance of a machine learning-based automatic music transcription model by adding musical information to the input data. Where, the added musical information is information on the number of pitches that occur in each time frame, and which is obtained by counting the number of notes activated in the answer sheet. The obtained information on the number of pitches was used by concatenating it to the log mel-spectrogram, which is the input of the existing model. In this study, we use the automatic music transcription model included the four types of block predicting four types of musical information, we demonstrate that a simple method of adding pitch number information corresponding to the music information to be predicted by each block to the existing input was helpful in training the model. In order to evaluate the performance improvement proceed with an experiment using MIDI Aligned Piano Sounds (MAPS) data, as a result, when using all pitch number information, performance improvement was confirmed by 9.7 % in frame-based F1 score and 21.8 % in note-based F1 score including offset.
