MPEG-based Transcoding for Scalable Video-on-Demand System

  • MPEG-2 transcoding scheme is proposed as scalable transmission system for a video-on-demand system is described. In this system video contents encoded by MPEG-2 are transmitted to receiver terminals via communication lines that have different bit rate. A transcoding technique that directly converts a bit stream encoded by MPEG-2 into a lower coding rate stream without decoding is proposed. The transcoder called Trampeg includes size reduction and frame drop approach. The experimental results show that an MPEG-2 stream of 0 Mbps is able to be transcoded into a stream of 1.5 Mbps-300 Kbps.

  • On ATM networks, MPEG video stream is transferred using CBR or VBR services. But because the MPEG video traffic varies greatly from time to time, it is very difficult to transfer the MPEG steam efficiently without loss of transmission bandwidth. Until now, the study on the traffic analysis and control on a single MPEG video stream has been done by many researchers, but the traffic analysis and control on a multiplexed traffic of multiple MPEG video streams has not been studied by any researcher. This paper proposes a multiplexing method to reduce the PCR and traffic variance of a multiplexed traffic of multiple MPEG video streams. By reducing the PCR of the multiplexed traffic, the multiplexed VBR traffic can be transferred efficiently with less loss of transmission bandwidth.

  • This paper proposes an information hiding algorithm using channel coding technique which can be used to detect transmission errors and to protect copyright for MPEG-2 video The watermark signal is generated by applying copyright information of video data to a convolutional encoder, and the signal is embedded into macro blocks in every frame while encoding to MPEG-2 video stream In the decoder, the embedded signal is detected from macro blocks in every frame, and the detected signal is used to localize transmission errors in the video stream. The detected signal can also be used to claim ownership of the video data by decoding it to the copyright Information. In this stage, errors in the detected watermark signal can be corrected by channel decoder. The 3 video sequences which consist of 300 frames each are applied to the proposed MPEG-2 codec. Experimental results show that the proposed method can detect transmission errors in the video stream while decoding and it can also reconstruct copyright information more correctly than the conventional method.

  • The MPEG Video Service of hilving il property of continuity and large cilPilcity needs lilrge network capilcity. Because most of users have a heterogeneous network environment, it's not efficient way that all users have same size of video data to provide them with real time video service. Therefore, for the pUl1Xlse of an efficient and appropriate utilization of network resources, it requires to develop and deploy a new scalable transmission technique in consideration of respective network environment and individual clients computing power. The purpose of this paper is to develop a technology that can adjust the amount of dilta transmitted as an M1'EG video stream according to its gi yen communication bandwidth, and a technique that can reflect dynamic bilndwidth while playing a video stream. For this purpose, we propose a TFS (Temporal-Fidelity Scaling) technique that splits the MPEG video stream into various substream according to picture type or resolution. Those methods proposed her can filcilitilte an effective use of network resources, and provide multimedia MPEG video services in real- time with respect to individual client computing environment

  • 본 논문은 인터넷 및 모바일 통신에서 많이 사용되는 MPEG video을 모바일 통신망에서 전송 및 재생하고, 모바일 환경에서 발생되는 Handoff 상에서 부드러운 스트림(stream) 재생(presentation)을 위한 멀티미디어 동기화 기법을 제안한다. 본 논문에서는 멀티미디어 동기화 기법으로 핸드오프 시MPEG 데이터의 특성을 이용한 핸드오프 제어 방법을 제안하였다. 분석결과, 제안된 기법은 기존의 기법보다 미디어 스트림의 끊김없는 재생(stream of continuous play out)을 제공하는 것뿐만 아니라 패킷의 높은 재생률(play?out rate)과 낮은 손실률(loss rate)을 보였다.

  • We describe the implementation of MPEG-4 Systems for Video on Demand services. We discuss the issues in implementint MPEG-4 Systems, specially Object Description and Elementary stream management(Buffer control, Synchronization). The file-server pump the multiplexed streams to the client through the DMIF. Interaction between server and client is done with User Command(play, pause, stop, fast foward, ...). Stream data are multiplexed off-line. In advance, the file-server read multiplexed streams and pumps it to MPEG-4 terminal(client). Our system can be used in various application not only Video on Demand services, but also Internet broadcasting, remote surveillance, mobile communication, remote education, etc.

  • This paper suggests structures of the Object Descriptor and the Elementary Stream Descriptor that provide multi-view video services in 3-Dimensional Audio Video technical standards of current MPEG-4. First, it defines that the structures of the Object Descriptor and the Elementary Stream Descriptor on established MPEG-4 system, then distributes individually, and analyzes that. But extension of established system is inappropriate for providing multi-view audio video services connected transmissions and receptions. And, this paper suggests a structure of new Object Descriptor able to switch viewpoints that considers the correlation between each viewpoints, when multi-view video is transmitted. By means of that, it is able to switch viewpoints according to a requirement of a user in a multi-view video services, and reduce overheads for transmitting information about necessary viewpoint.

  • VOD(Video On Demand) that provides streaming service according to the user's requirement in real time, consists of the video streaming server and the client system. Since it is very hard to apply the traditional server-client model that a server communicates with many clients through 1:1 connection to VOD system because it requires very high network bandwidth, many researches have been done to address this problem. Batching technique is one of VOD system based on Multicast that requires very small network bandwidth. However, the batching based VOD system has a limitation that it is very hard to provide VCR(Video Cassette Recorder) ability. In this paper, we propose a technique that reduces the required network bandwidth to provide VCR function by using the characteristic of MPEG, one of international video compression standard. In the proposed technique, a new video stream for VCR function is constructed with I pictures that is able to be decoded independently. The new video stream for VCR function is transmitted with the video stream for normal play together in Batching manner. The performance evaluation result shows that the proposed technique not only reduces the required network bandwidth and memory usage but also decreases the CPU usages.

  • Stereoscopic video service is one of the most widely adopted technologies for 3-Dimensional technology. However, the stereoscopic video service has not been penetrated into the market since there does not exist a proper transmission method even though the conventional MPEG-2 Transport Stream (TS) has support for broadcast service of mono-scopic video contents. This is partly because the MPEG-2 TS does not support displaying a stereoscopic video content which consists of several composition types widely used in the market. This paper proposes the new MPEG-2 TS specification suitable for transmitting and displaying stereoscopic video contents. In order to show feasibility of the proposal, this paper describes an end-to-end system which is implemented with consideration of the method how to multiplex and de-multiplex stereoscopic video contents as well as keeping backward compatibility with the traditional MPEG-2 TS.

  • In this paper, we propose an simple and efficient method to estunate the camera operation by using compressed information, which is extracted diracily from MPEG2 stream without complete decoding. In the method, the motion vector is converted into approximate optical flow by using the feature of predicted frame, because the motion vector in MPEG2 video stream is not regular sequene. And they are used to estimate the camera operation, which consist of pan, and zoom by Hough transform technique. The method provided better results than the least square method for video stream of basketball and socer games. The proposed method can have a reduced computational complexity because the information is directiv abtained in compressed domain. Additionally it can be a useful technology in content-based searching and analysis of video information. Also, the estimatd cameral operationis applicable in searching or tracking objects in MPEG2 video stream without decoding.
