  • In this paper, experimental and theoretical investigations of the effect of the mean moment on the response and collapse of circular thin-walled tubes subjected to cyclic bending are discussed. To highlight the influence of the mean moment effect, three different moment ratios r (minimum moment/ maximum moment) of -1, -0.5 and 0, respectively, were experimentally investigated. It has been found that the moment-curvature loop gradually shrinks with the number of cycles, and becomes stable after a few cycles for symmetric cyclic bending (r = -1). However, the moment-curvature loop exhibits ratcheting and increases with the number of cycles for unsymmetric cyclic bending (r = -0.5 or 0). In addition, although the three groups of tested specimens had three different moment ratios, when plotted in a log-log scale, three parallel straight lines describe the relationship between the controlled moment range and the number of cycles necessary to produce buckling. Finally, the endochronic theory combined with the principle of virtual work was used to simulate the relationship among the moment, curvature and ovalization of thin-walled tubes under cyclic bending. An empirical formulation was proposed for simulating the relationship between the moment range and the number of cycles necessary to produce buckling for thin-walled tubes subjected to cyclic bending with different moment ratios. The results of the experimental investigation and the simulation are in good agreement with each other.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the stair heights on lower extremity joint moment in stair-ascent activity Data were collected by 3-D cinematography, force platform. six normal males were participated in this experiment. All subjects performed a stair-ascent in four different heights of stairs (10, 14, 18, 22cm) having a 5 step staircase. The moment of lower extremity joint was analyzed during stance phase. The results were as follows: First, the second increase of plantar flexion moment of ankle joint in the 'forward continuance' phase was not occurred for stair A and B. But it occurred for stair C and D. And the maximum plantar flexion moment increased as the stair height become higher. Second, it was shown that the maximum inversion moment of the ankle joint was the smallest at stair B and it increased significantly at stair C. Third, maximum extension moment appeared in the 'pull-up' phase. And it increased as the stair height become higher. Fourth, it was shown that the maximum abduction moment of the knee joint was the smallest at stair C and it increased significantly at stair C. Fifth, maximum extension moment of hip joint increased significantly at stair C. Sixth, remarkable value of adduction moment occurred at hip joints and maximum adduction moment increased at stair D.

  • Full univariate moment problems have been studied using continued fractions, orthogonal polynomials, spectral measures, and so on. On the other hand, the truncated moment problem has been mainly studied through confirming the existence of the extension of the moment matrix. A few articles on the multivariate moment problem implicitly presented about some results of this note, but we would like to rearrange the important results for the existence of a representing measure of a moment sequence. In addition, new techniques with orthogonal polynomials will be introduced to expand the means of studying truncated moment problems.

  • Nominal shear strength of concrete beam is the combined strength of concrete shear strength and steel shear strength in current design code. But Torsional moment strength of concrete is neglected in calculation of the nominal torsional moment strength of reinforced concrete beam in current revised code. Tensile stress of concrete strut between cracks is still in effect due to tension stiffening effect. But the tensile stresses of concrete after cracking are neglected in bending and torsion in design. The torsional behavior is similar to the shear behavior in mechanics. Therefore the torsional moment strength of concrete should be concluded to the nominal torsional moment strength of reinforced concrete beam. To verify the validity of the proposed model, the nominal torsional moment strengths according to CEB, two ACI codes(89, 99) and proposed model are compared to experimental torsional strengths of 55 test specimens found in literature. The nominal torsional moment strengths by the proposed model show the best results.

  • The purposes of this study were to describe and compare pint moments according to 6 types of gait methods during free speed. 15 volunteers(7 male, 8 female: mean age = 23.33 yrs.) participated and performed 6 types of gait methods. From the 3 types of pint moments of lower extremities(hip, knee, ankle and foot), the following results were made: 1. In left hip pint, the flexion-extension moment was not significantly different, but the adduction-abduction moment and rotation moment were showed different curves during stance phase. 2. In left knee pint, the flexion-extension moment was not significantly different, but the varus-valgus moment and rotation moment were showed different curves during stance phase. 3. In left ankle and foot the dorsiflexion-plantarflexion moment was not significantly different but the varus-valgus moment and rotation moment were showed different curves during stance phase. In conclusion, because weight loading gait with 10-20% of body weight were normal gait patterns, It was inferred that all weight loading gaits did not indicate noxious reactions of human body.

  • The steel shows plastic deformation after the yield point exceeds. Because of overloads, the plastic deformation occurs at the interior support of a continuous bridge. The plastic deformation is concentrated at the interior support, and the permanence deformation at the interior support remains after loads pass. Because local yielding causes the positive moment at the interior support, it is called "auto moment". Auto moment redistributes the elastic moment. Because of redistribution, auto moment decreases the negative moment at the interior support of a continuous bridge. In this paper, the moment-rotation curve from Schalling is used. The Plastic rotation is computed by using Beam-line method, and auto moment is calculated based on the experiment curve. The design example is presented using limit state criterion.

  • A low cost force./moment sensor that can be used in the robot teaching task is presented. Force Sensing Resistor is used as the transducer. The principle of force/moment detection is explained, the architecture of the sensor is shown, and the measurement of the force/moment is presented. The force/moment sensor shown in this work is not meant to be used in a precise force/moment control, but it is intended to be used in the robot teaching where low accuracy can be tolerated.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of changing the steps height on the joint moment of lower extremity in stair-descent activity of elderly persons. Data were collected by 3-D cinematography and force platform. 9 male elderly subjects in the 60s and 70s participated in this study. All subjects performed a stair-descent in four different heights of stairs (10, 14, 18, 22cm) having 5 step staircase. The results were as follows. 1. For the step height of 22cm the maximum. plantarflexion moment was the smallest and the largest for the step height of 14cm. 2. There was not a statistical difference shown for the extension moment of the knee joint for the different height of steps. 3. There was not a statistical difference shown for the flexion moment of the hip joint for the varying height of steps but on average for the 18cm step this increased rapidly. 4. The smallest maximum. value for inversion moment was revealed for the step height of 10cm and this increased significantly for the step height of 22cm. 5. The smallest maximum. value for abduction moment of the hip joint was revealed for the step height of 10cm and this increased significantly for the step height of 22cm. 6. There was no significant difference shown for the maximum. abduction moment for the hip joint. The main conclusion is that there is a huge difference in the moment of the lower extremities for the elderly while walking down a stairs with a step height above 18 cm and that this moment increased or decreased rapidly under a condition of step height being 22cm. With the results from this research and related research of elderly walking upstairs it can be shown that the step height has a large role in the safety for the elderly.

  • This paper presents definition of symmetry of a ship section where three symmetries are proposed: material, geometric, and load symmetries. Precise terminologies of centroid, moment plane, and neutral axis plane are also defined. It is suggested that force vector equilibrium as well as force equilibrium are necessary condition to determine new position of neutral axis due to translational and rotational mobility. It is also stated that new reference datum of ENMP(elastic neutral moment plane), PNMP(fully plastic moment plane), ENAP(elastic neutral axis plane), and INAP(inelastic neutral moment plane) are required to define asymmetric section properties such as second moment of area, elastic section modulus, yield moment, fully plastic moment, and ultimate moment. Since collision-induced damage and flooding-induced biaxial bending moment produce typical asymmetry of section, the section properties are calculated for a typical VLCC. Geometry asymmetry is determined from ABS and DNV rules and two moment planes of 0/30 degs are assumed for load asymmetry. It is proved that the property reduction ratios directly calculated from second moment of area are usually larger than area reduction ratio. Reduction ratio of ultimate moment capacity shows almost linearly proportional to area reduction ratio. Mobility of elastic and inelastic neutral axis planes is visually provided.
