  • The Phyllostachys pubescens planted in the Nambu forest Experiment was used for this study. The growth ages of the P. pubescens were 1, 2 and 3 years, respectively. The experiment was carried out every month in between June of 2001 and May of 2002. The p. pubescens were divided into upper, middle and lower parts according to the growing points. The static modulus of elascity($MOE_d$) and dynamic modulus of elascity($MOE_d$) were investigated for the physical and mechanical properties of the P. pubescens. The density, MOEs and $MOE_d$according to the growing points were highest in the upper part of the P. pubescens. Generally, density and MOEs and $MOE_d$ of the P pubescens for 3 years grows larger every month. However, moisture content, MOEs and $MOE_d$ of the P. pubescens for 1, 2 years had nothing to do with growth ages and felling time. In the case of the relationships between average MOEs and $MOE_d$ the correlation coefficient was 0.88 in between June of 2001 and May of 2002. Also, $MOE_d$ showed about 18.5% higher than MOEs. Generally, the equally expressed in research that was known that $MOE_d$ of wood is higher than MOEs of wood. Therefore, the $MOE_d$ using a resonance frequency mode is useful as a nondestructive evaluation(NDE) method for predicting the MOE of the P. pubescens.

  • Although the weapon systems are becoming more diverse and complex, they are progressing in a short development period and a longer test and evaluation period. The more difficult the given environment is, the more efforts and performance of quantitative target values can be made by development agencies to carry out stable projects. However, these target values of the Integrated Logistics Support are not specified in the requirements and being set during the system development phase. In this paper, application of MOEs, MOPs and TPMs for ILS are presented and provided the basis for carrying out systematic Verification & Validation activities. As a result that MOEs of the ILS were chosen as Availability and MOPs as Mission Reliability, Logistics Reliability, Maintainability and Supportability and TPMs as MTBF, MTBCF, MTTR and so on. In particular, it is appropriate tailoring and apply the TPMs considering the cost, schedule, scope of work and characteristics of the project.

  • The bending performances were evaluated at the radiata pine plywood through veneer compositions encompassing veneer quality, ply-numbers and overlays of the high density- or medium density-phenol resin impregnated sheets (hereafter abbreviated as resin sheets) on the raw plywood. In addition, a prediction on the bending MOE of veneers and plywoods was carried out by the nondestructive testing with stresswave timer. The summarized results were as follows: I. Bending strength and bending MOE of resin sheets-overlaid plywoods in parallel surface grain direction through 5 and 7ply were increased by 13 to 45% and 17 to 34%, respectively. Resin sheets-overlay occurred an increasing effect of the strength efficiency i.e. strength perpendicular-to-grain direction versus that parallel-to-grain direction, showing the phenomenon that the plywood strength becomes greater at the perpendicular-to-grain direction of 7ply than at that of 5ply. Displacement at bending failure had a greater trend at 7ply than at 5ply, and was decreased by resin sheets-overlay. 2. After the nondestructive bending MOEs were measured for individual veneers, these veneers were rearranged in plywood-manufacture. In these plywoods, including resin sheets-overlay, the actual MOE was predictable with feasibility of $R^2$=0.53, and also the nondestructively-evaluated MOE was lower by 20% in raw plywood, and higher 20% in LVL than actual bending MOEs.

  • The objective of this study is to build a methodology for evaluating intelligent transportation systems (ITS) projects, by selecting measures of effectiveness (MOEs) and developing an approach to collect and process traffic data. While reviewing the existing MOEs and evaluation methodologies for ITS projects, several problems were found, such as the complication in delineating study areas, the absence of standardized evaluation methodologies, and the duplication in selecting MOEs. To tackle these problems, two MOEs capable of directly evaluating traffic conditions were chosen: i.e., average vehicle speed and traffic volume. Both MOEs can not only include all the functions of the existing MOEs, but also be simpler and more objective in evaluating real traffic conditions. The traffic volume can be measured by using either "cordon line" or "all point average" methods. On the other hand, measuring the average vehicle speed depends on site-specific characteristics such as traffic flow states (interrupted or uninterrupted) and traffic conditions (congested or uncongested). The present methodology is easily understandable for anyone and applicable for any ITS project, and is also expected to contribute to building a standardized evaluation system.

  • PURPOSES : This study evaluated the feasibility of implementing protected-permissive left-turn (PPLT) signals at three-leg signalized intersections. METHODS: A three-leg signalized intersection with permissive left-turn was first selected. A VISSIM simulation model was constructed using data collected from the test site. The VISSIM network was calibrated by adjusting related parameter values in order to minimize the difference between the simulated and surveyed critical gap. The calibrated network was validated by the number of waiting left-turning vehicles per cycle. Finally, the mobility and safety measures were extracted from simulation runs in which permissive, protected left turns as well as PPLTs were realized based on diverse traffic volume scenarios. RESULTS : The mobility-related measures of effectiveness (MOEs) of the case with PPLT outperformed the other two left-turn treatment scenarios. In particular, the average waiting time per cycle for the left-turn vehicles in the case with PPLT was reduced by 30 s. The safety-related MOEs of the case with PPLT were somewhat higher than those in the case with protected left-turns and much higher than those in the case with permissive left-turns. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the mobility- and safety-related MOEs generated from the VISSIM simulation runs, the use of PPLT seems to be feasible at three-leg signalized intersections where the left-turn is permissive and a pedestrian signal exists at the conflicting approach. However, in order to use the PPLT in earnest, it is necessary to revise the road traffic act, traffic signs, and related manuals.

  • Korea Highway Capacity Manual (2001) proposes only LOS(Level of Service) analysis method on non-control and two-way-stop intersections, not dealing with the analysis method on LOS for roundabouts, nor even including the term 'roundabout'. This study selects proper MOEs for roundabouts and criteria the LOS through simulation analysis. To attain this goal, the authors reviewed the methods to select proper MOEs in the first step, criteria the Los. For this study, the MOEs were chosen from existing literature, and used for the criteria. The MOEs to be applied to roundabouts in this research were entry traffic volume, v/c (volume/capacity) ratio, and average vehicle delays. The results showed that the maximum entry traffic volume(LOS F) at local one-lane roundabout was analyzed to be 1,700pcph and average vehicle delay 18 seconds LOS A was analyzed as 700pcph and average vehicle delay 3 seconds and v/c 0.41 in this case Maximum entry traffic volume(LOS F) at local area 2 lane roundabouts was analyzed as 2,900pcph and their average vehicle delay as 31 seconds LOS A was analyzed to be 1.500pcph and average vehicle delay 8 seconds, v/c 0.52.

  • In this paper, we propose a robust moving object tracking(MOT) method based on motion energy and prediction. MOT consists of two steps: moving object extraction step(MOES) and moving object tracking step(MOTS). For MOES, we use improved motion energy method. For MOTS, we predict the next location of moving object based on distance and direction information among previous instances, so that we can reduce the search space for correspondence. We apply the method to both synthetic and real world sequences and find that the method works well even in the presence of occlusion and disocclusion.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate current packaging modules and design the most acceptable packaging module for domestic and international distribution systems. An optimum packaging module can reduce package costs as well as total distribution costs such as transport, materials handling and warehouse costs. Three different sizes of packaging modules, namely U-type($600{\times}500\;mm$), K -ype($550{\times}366\;mm$) and I-type($600{\times}400\;mm$), were evaluated in terms of the area efficiency and MOEs(measures of effectiveness) for the T-11($1100{\times}1100mm$) and T-12($1,200{\times}1,000\;mm$) pallets. The results showed that the U-type module could fit very well for both pallets and the area efficiency of each module was more than 99 percents. Area efficiency of K-and I-type modules was greatly affected by the pallet footprint dimensions. U-type module also performed better result from MOEs evaluation. Twenty sub-multiple sizes derived from the U-type module were suggested for the future development of the Korean and ISO standards on dimension of transport packages.

  • In this study, the border security problem of the ROK Army is examined by applying the agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS) concept as well as its platform, MANA. Based on the approximately optimized behavior of the infiltrator obtained using genetic algorithm (GA), we evaluate the GOP border security system which consists of human resources, surveillance, as well as command and control (C2) systems. We use four measures of effectiveness (MOEs) to evaluate its performance, and we apply a near optimal latin hypercube (NOLH) design to deal with the large number of factors of interest in our model. By using a NOLH design, our simulation runs are implemented efficiently. We hope the results of this study provide valuable data for deciding the configuration of the border security system structure and the number of soldiers assigned in the platoon.

  • In this study, eco-friendly hybrid composite boards were manufactured from green tea and wood fibers for application as interior materials with various functionalities of green tea and strong strength properties of wood fibers. In this relation, the effect of green tea content on dynamic MOEs (modulus of elasticity) of these green tea and wood fibers composite boards were investigated. The dynamic MOEs of hybrid composite boards were lower than those of control boards without green tea, and the values decreased with the increase of green tea content. Also, the dynamic MOEs appeared to be somewhat different by resin type used for board manufacture. The hybrid composite boards manufactured from $E_1$ grade urea resin, which has higher molar ratio of formaldehyde to urea than that of $E_0$ grade one, were 1.06~1.54 times higher than that manufactured from $E_0$ grade. And, the differences between hybrid composite boards manufactured from both adhesive increased with the increase of green tea content. On the other hand, high correlations were found between dynamic MOE and static bending strength performances, it was concluded that static bending strength performances could be estimated from the dynamic MOE, except for a few hybrid board types with large variations.
