Drought monitoring over paddy field area is an important role as the frequency and intensity of drought due to climate change increases. This study analyzed the applicability of drought monitoring on paddy crops using MODIS-based field surveys. As a satellite-based drought index using evapotranspiration for quantitative drought determination, ESI (Evaporative Stress Index), was applied and calculated through the ratio of MODIS- based actual and potential evapotranspiration. For the irrigated areas of Idong, Gosam, Geumgwang, and Madun reservoirs the availability of irrigation water supply, ponding depth, precipitation, paddy growth were investigated for the paddy field within one grid of MODIS. In addition, the percentile-based ESI drought severity was calculated to compare the growth process of paddy and changes in the drought category of ESI. The Idong area was irrigated about a week later than other reservoirs for the period of water supply, transplanting, and water drainage and the ESI drought category tended to be different. The Gosam, Geumgwang, and Madun area expressed moderate drought prior to the farming season, and indicated normal as the water was supplied. During the water drainage, the drought category intensified, indicating that the water available on land was decreasing. These results demonstrated that the MODIS-based ESI could be an effective tool for agricultural drought monitoring over paddy field area.

The purpose of this study is to estimate monthly Morton evapotranspiration (ET) using normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) from MODIS satellite images. Morton ET for land surface conditions was evaluated by using daily meteorological data, and the monthly averaged Morton ETs for each land cover were compared with the monthly NDVIs of three years (2000-2002) at Chungjudam Watershed. There was a high correlation between monthly NDVI and Morton ET for the watershed with average coefficient of determination, 0.80. By comparing the MODIS NDVI ET with SLURP Morton ET, the SLURP ET was smaller than the MODIS NDVI ET. This was estimated from the consideration of soil moisture condition for the ET occurrence in the SLURP model, the limited information from the monthly NDVI values, and the errors from the derived regression equations.
Ocean color products derived from remote sensing satellite data are useful for monitoring the sea water quality such as the concentrations of chlorophyll, sediments and dissolved organic matter. Currently, ocean color products derived from MODIS data can be requested from NASA over the internet. However, due to the bandwidth limitation of most users in this region, and the time delay in data delivery, the products cannot be use for near-real time monitoring of sea water chlorophyll. CRISP operates a MODIS data receiving station for environmental monitoring purposes. MODIS data have been routinely received and processed to level 1B. We have adapted the higher level processing algorithms from the Institutional Algorithms provided by NASA to run in a standalone environment. The implemented algorithms include the MODIS ocean color algorithms. Seasonal chlorophyll concentration composite can be compiled for the region. By comparing the near-real time chlorophyll product with the seasonal composite, anomaly in chlorophyll concentration can be detected.

This study introduces a technique to merge three different sea surface temperature(SST) data obtained from multi-satellite sensors. NGSST algorithm, the most popular method of related society, estimates a center pixel of target SST using temporal and spatial correlations, excluding SST accuracies according to sensing methods or properties of satellites. We suggest a merging method of SST to consider the accuracy by satellite or sensor with a comparison with NGSST method. The data used for a merged daily SST with spatial resolution of 5 km was applied from three different satellite sensors such as MODIS, AVHRR and AMSR-E from April 2 to 4, 2011 around the southern coast of Korea. Results of the comparisons showed that the new method is higher than the NGSST method and its STDEV represents a comparatively low value. In future we are planning to compare and analyze the datasets during the daytime as well as nighttime over total cycle of the day.
Since longer wavelength microwave radiation can penetrate clouds, satellite passive microwave sensors can observe sea ice of the entire polar region on a daily basis. Thus, it is becoming popular to derive sea ice motion vectors from a pair of satellite passive microwave sensor images observed at one or few day interval. Usually, the accuracies of derived vectors are validated by comparing with the position data of drifting buoys. However, the number of buoys for validation is always quite limited compared to a large number of vectors derived from satellite images. In this study, the sea ice motion vectors automatically derived from pairs of AMSR-E 89GHz images (IFOV = 3.5 ${\times}$ 5.9km) by an image-to-image cross correlation were validated by comparing with sea ice motion vectors manually derived from pairs of cloudless MODIS images (IFOV=250 ${\times}$ 250m). Since AMSR-E and MODIS are both on the same Aqua satellite of NASA, the observation time of both sensors are the same. The relative errors of AMSR-E vectors against MODIS vectors were calculated. The accuracy validation has been conducted for 5 scenes. If we accept relative error of less than 30% as correct vectors, 75% to 92% of AMSR-E vectors derived from one scene were correct. On the other hand, the percentage of correct sea ice vectors derived from a pair of SSM/I 85GHz images (IFOV = 15 ${\times}$ 13km) observed nearly simultaneously with one of the AMSR-E images was 46%. The difference of the accuracy between AMSR-E and SSM/I is reflecting the difference of IFOV. The accuracies of H and V polarization were different from scene to scene, which may reflect the difference of sea ice distributions and their snow cover of each scene.
The aerosol optical thickness data retrieved by Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) of Terra & Aqua and Meteorological Imager (MI) of Communication Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) are analyzed and compared with the measurement data of Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) in Northeast Asia. As the result, the aerosol optical thickness retrieved by MODIS and MI were well agreed at ocean region but quite different at cloud edge and barren surface. The reason was that MODIS aerosol optical thickness was retrieved using the visible and infrared channels but MI was retrieved with the visible channel only. Consequentially, the thin cloud be misinterpreted as aerosol by MI and the difference between MODIS and MI aerosol optical thicknesses could be occurred with Normal Distribution Vegetation Index (NDVI) and land surface property. Therefore, the accuracies of clear/cloud region and surface reflectivity are required in order to improve the aerosol optical thickness algorithm by MI.
The technique of Brightness Temperature Difference (BTD) between 11 and $12{\mu}m$ separates yellow sand dust from clouds according to the difference in absorptive characteristics between the channels. However, this method causes consistent false alarms in many cases, especially over the desert. In order to reduce these false alarms, we should eliminate the background noise originated from surface. We adopted the Background BTD (BBTD), which stands for surface characteristics on clear sky condition without any dust or cloud. We took an average of brightness temperatures of 11 and $12{\mu}m$ channels during the previous 15 days from a target date and then calculated BTD of averaged ones to obtain decontaminated pixels from dust. After defining the BBTD, we subtracted this index from BTD for the Yellow Sand Index (YSI). In the previous study, this method was already verified using the geostationary satellite, MTSAT. In this study, we applied this to the polar orbiting satellite, MODIS, to detect yellow sand dust over Northeast Asia. Products of yellow sand dust from OMI and MTSAT were used to verify MODIS YSI. The coefficient of determination between MODIS YSI and MTSAT YSI was 0.61, and MODIS YSI and OMI AI was also 0.61. As a result of comparing two products, significantly enhanced signals of dust aerosols were detected by removing the false alarms over the desert. Furthermore, the discontinuity between land and ocean on BTD was removed. This was even effective on the case of fall. This study illustrates that the proposed algorithm can provide the reliable distribution of dust aerosols over the desert even at night.

This study is to analyze the heavy snowfall vulnerable area of snow load design criteria for greenhouse, cattle shed and building using ground measured snow depth data and Terra MODIS snow cover area(SCA). To analyze the heavy snowfall vulnerable area, Terra MODIS satellite images for 12 years(2001-2012) were used to obtain the characteristics of snow depth and snow cover areas respectively. By comparing the snow load design criteria for greenhouse(cm), cattle shed($kg/m^2$), and building structure($kN/m^2$) with the snow depth distribution results by Terra MODIS satellite images, the facilities located in Jeolla-do, Chungcheong-do, and Gangwon-do areas were more vulnerable to exceed the current design criteria.

SEBAL (Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land) developed by Bastiaanssen (1995) is an image-processing model comprisedof twenty-five sub models that calculates spatial evapotranspiration (ET) and other energy exchanges at the surface. SEBAL uses image data from Landsat or other satellites measuring thermal infrared radiation, visible and near infrared. In this study, the model was applied to Gyeongancheon watershed, the main tributary of Han river Basin. ET was computed on apixel-by-pixel basis from an energy balance using 4 years (2001-2004) Landsat and MODIS images. The scale effect between Landsat (30 m) and MODIS (1 km) was evaluated. The results both from Landsat and MODIS were compared with FAO Penman-Monteith ET. The absolute errors between satellite ETs and Penman-Monteith ET were within 12%. The spatial and temporal characteristics of ET distribution within the watershed were also analyzed.
Although low spatial resolution satellite images like MODIS and GOCI can be important to observe land surface, it is often difficult to visually interpret the imagery because of the low contrast by prevailing cloud covers. We proposed a simple and adaptive stretching algorithm to enhance image contrast over land areas in cloudy images. The proposed method is basically a linear algorithm that stretches only non-cloud pixels. The adaptive linear stretch method uses two values: the low limit (L) from image statistics and upper limit (U) from low boundary value of cloud pixels. The cloud pixel value was automatically determined by pre-developed empirical function for each spectral band. We used MODIS and GOCI images having various types of cloud distributions and coverage. The adaptive contrast stretching method was evaluated by both visual interpretation and statistical distribution of displayed brightness values.
