Idle Mode for Deep Power Save in IEEE 802.11 WLANs

  • Along with the wide acceptance of IEEE 802.11 wireless local area network (WLAN), new applications such as Internet protocol (IP) telephony over WLAN are fast emerging today. For battery-powered IP phone devices, the life time extension is a key concern for the market acceptance while today's 802.11 is not optimized for snch an operation. In this paper, we propose a novel idle mode operation, which comprises paging, idle handoff, and delayed handoff. Under the idle mode operation, a mobile host(MH) without any active session does not need to perform handoff within a predefined paging area (PA). Only when it enters a new PA, an idle handoff is performed. The proposed idle mode allows an MH without traffic to extend its life time. We develop a new analytical model in order to comparatively evaluate our proposed scheme. The numerical resnlts demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms the existing schemes with respect to power consumption.

  • 차세대 인터넷은 유.무선이 혼합된 초고속의 네트워크 구조에서 사용자가 시간과 장소에 관계없이 실시간 멀티미디어 서비스를 제공받을 수 있는 환경으로 변화될 것이다. 이 변화에 잘 대응하기 위해서는 이동하는 사용자에게 효율적으로 멀티캐스팅을 지원할 필요가 있다. Mobile IP 기반의 이동 네트워크 환경에서 멀티캐스팅을 지원하기 위만 연구는 크게 HA(Home Agent)기반 방식과 FA(Foreign Agent)기반 방식으로 연구되어 왔다. HA기반 방식은 데이터 전송 경로의 비최적화, 비효율적인 데이터 중복 전송의 문제를 가지고, FA기반 방식은 빈번한 멀티캐스트 전송 트리의 재구성으로 인한 오버헤드의 문제를 내포하고 있다. 따라서, 본 논문에서는 MH(Mobile Host)의 잦은 핸드오프(handoff) 문제를 해결하고, 멀티캐스트 전송 트리의 재구성으로 인한 오버헤드를 줄이는 방법을 제안한다. 이 방법은 계층적 트리 구조의 도메인을 구성하고 MFA(Multicast Forwarding Agent)와 홉 카운터로 정의된 MFA의 서비스 범위를 사용한다. 또한, MFA를 Root FA들 중에서 선택함으로써 멀티캐스트 전송 트리 재구성의 회수를 줄여 Mobile IP를 이용하는 MH에게 효과적인 멀티캐스팅을 제공한다.

  • 전기자동차에서 주 에너지원은 축전지이다. 현재전기자동차용 축전지는 에너지 밀도 및 파워 밀도가 커지고 있지만 기존의 자동차에 비해서 주행거리가 짧다. 그래서 전지관리장치(Battery management System : BMS) 개발목적은 효율적으로 배터리를 관리하여 전기자동차의 전력시스템을 최적으로 운전하는 데 있다. 주행 중 즉 모터링시 축전시의 상태에 따라 인버터의 운전을 최적으로 하기 위한 제어방식을 도입하고 충전시에도 축전시의 충전상태에 따른 충전모드를 선택하여 제어하는 방식을 도입하고자 한다. 전기자동차 전력시스템의 최적운전을 실현할 수 있고 이를 통해 주행거리를 증대시킬수 있는 전기자동차 용 Ni-MH 전지 제어 알고리즘을 이용하여 개발한 BMS에 대해 소개한다.

  • In this paper, three-phase power equalizing system (PES) with UPS function is proposed. This system is based on NiMH battery with battery management system. The power conversion circuit is composed with the three-phase converter/inverter, the bi-directional converter, and the thyristor switches. The three-phase converter/inverter provides the power to the grid or get the power from the grid. Also, it operates as a UPS. The bi-directional converter charges or discharges the battery. The thyristor switches are used for connecting/disconnecting with the grid and the load. A 15 kW prototype is implemented for the verifying the performance of the proposed system.

  • Mobile IP(MIP)[1] Working Group에서 제안하고 있는 멀티캐스트 적용 방안에는 크게 HA기반 라우팅과 FA기반 라우팅으로 구분된다. HA기반 라우팅 방법은 멀티캐스트 패킷을 HA에서 터널링하는 방법을 사용하므로 경로의 최적화가 이루어지지 않게 되며 터널 집중화 현상이 발생하게 된다. FA기반 라우팅 방법은 이동 호스트의 핸드오프가 일어날 때마다 멀티캐스트 트리의 재구성이 필요하므로 많은 오버헤드가 발생하지만 경로 최적화는 얻을 수 있다. 본 논문은 HA기반 라우팅과 FA기반 라우팅 방안을 절충한 새로운 멀티캐스트 제공 방안을 제안한다. MH의 이동이 빈번한 마이크로 레벨에서는 HA기반 라우팅을 이용하고, MH의 이동 거리가 큰 매크로 레벨에서는 경로 최적화를 위하여 새로운 멀티캐스트 트리를 재구성함으로써 보다 효율적 멀티캐스트 서비스가 가능한 메커니즘의 프로토타입을 제안한다.

  • This paper presents a microprocessor controlled electronic ballast for HID lamps, which gives automatic switching between MH and HPS lamps. Lamp identification is carried out by checking variation of lamp impedance at warm-up phase. Direct spread spectrum is done by applying 1 kHz triangular wave for removing acoustic resonance. This frequency modulation of 1 kHz gives also low EMI level. The microprocessor controls the voltage of DC-bus, the voltage of ignition pulses, the power of output. A 250W electronic ballast is implemented with ATmega16 CPU.

  • The discharge capacity of V-Ti-Ni(V-rich) metal hydride electrode during the charge-discharge cycling was investigated in KOH electrolyte. All electrodes were degraded within 25 cycles. To investigate the cause of the degradation phenomena impedance measurements were performed by using E.I.S(electrochemical impedance spectroscopy). The surfaces of the degraded electrodes were examined by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). It was observed that all electrodes were covered with oxygen from the surface to the bulk, titanium was enriched near surface, and vanadium was dissolved from the surface to the bulk.

ARCA-An Adaptive Routing Protocol for Converged Ad-Hoc and Cellular Networks

  • This paper proposes an adaptive routing protocol called ARCA for converged ad-hoc and cellular network (CACN). Due to the limitation of both bandwidth and transmission range in a cell, a mobile host (MH) may not be able to make a call during busy time. CACN offers a flexible traffic diversion mechanism that allows a MH to use the bandwidth in another cell to ease the congestion problem and increase the throughput in a cellular network. Based on the presentation of CACN's physical characteristics, the paper details the design issues and operation of the adaptive routing protocol for CACN (ARCA). Detailed numerical analysis is presented in terms of both route request rejection rate and routing overhead, which, along with the simulation results, have indicated the effectiveness and efficiency of the ARCA protocol.

  • Recently Ni/MH secondary battery have been studied very extensively because of containing no pollutants as well as superior performance. However comparing to widely studying high capacity of hydrogen storage alloys electrode, the capacity of Ni electrode is inferior. Using for high capacity Ni/MH battery as a anodic materials, the study about high capacity Ni electrode is necessary. To making high capacity Ni electrode, active materials were impregnated in various polarization impregnation conditions. Plaque, milling for 6hr and sintered at $800^{\circ}C$, indicated porosity over 80%, and porosity were increased with proper condition electrochemical etching treatment. Proper impregnation condition was 40~80mA/cm, polarizing time was 5~10min.

  • The Zr-based Laves phase, $ZrV_2$ hydrogen storage alloy is not suited for the electrode of Ni-MH battery, because the binding strength of that with hydrogen is too strong although the storage capacity is high. For an application to electrode a part of V in alloys is substituted with Ni to make weaken the binding strength. The electrochemical and thermodynamic properties of Zr-V-Ni system alloys are investigated from the equilibrium potential and studied the possibility for the application to the rechargeable battery electrode.
