  • In this paper, chloracetyl chitosan (CACTS) was prepared at first. In the molecules of CACTS, there are active chlorine groups, which can take part in other reactions. Thus, number of chitosan derivatives will be obtained after chlorine is substituted. Choosing pyridine as the active group, a novel water-soluble chitosan derivative, (2-pyridyl)-acetyl chitosan (PACTS) was obtained and its antioxidant activity against hydroxyl radicals and superoxide radicals was assessed. The results indicated that PACTS had better antioxidant activity than that of chitosan, carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCTS), hydroxypropyl chitosan (HPCTS), and Vitamin C. And the $IC_{50}$ values against hydroxyl radicals and superoxide radicals were 0.31 mg/mL and 0.21 mg/mL, respectively.

  • In this paper, tension tests and formability tests are performed to construct a database related to mechanical properties and the formability of the AZ31B Mg alloy sheet. A forming test with a hemi-spherical punch is conducted at varying temperatures to establish a forming limit diagram. In order to verify the applicability of the analysis using the conventional flow hardening model, a finite element analysis is performed on the hemi-spherical punch forming process and the results are compared with experimental ones. The study investigates problems involving a computational analysis that does not consider flow softening of the magnesium alloy at elevated temperatures.

  • In general, the background light that is produced during the reset period deteriorates the dark room contrast ratio in AC PDP. In this paper, we propose a modified ramp reset pulse that can reduce the background light to an imperceptible level. In the new reset waveform, the discharges between the scan and sustain electrodes are minimized by applying a positive bias voltage to the sustain electrode and only the weak discharges between the scan and address electrodes are found to occur during the reset period. We also adopted the MgO coated phosphor layer to improve the address voltage margin that was reduced when the bias voltage in the modified ramp reset waveform was applied. As a result, the address voltage margin of 45 V which is the same level of the conventional method was ortained and the dark room contrast ratio was improved up to 7500 : 1.

  • In AC-PDP, it is necessary to achieve high luminance efficiency, high luminance and high definition by adopting technologies such as high xenon concentration, MgO doping, and long gap. However, it is very difficult to apply above technologies because they make the driving voltage margin reduced. Especially, high Xe concentration technology for high efficacy makes not only the driving voltage margin reduced but also the stability of reset discharge decreased at low temperature. In this paper, we studied temperature and voltage dependent stability of reset discharge and present the experimental results of the discharge characteristics at low temperature. In addition, we suggested the mechanism of bright noise and black noise at low temperature. Finally, we proposed double reset waveform to improve the bright noise and descending scan time method to improve the black noise.

  • This paper presents the time responses of calcium ($Ca^{2+}$) ion concentration of MG-63 cells induced by a constant shear stress in micro channel were observed in the real time. Most of cells have similar rising time. There were some time delays because of the initial position of the cell in the micro channel along the pressure-driven fluid flow. The concentration of $Ca^{2+}$ exponentially decreased while time constant of each profile did not have any relation to the peak value of concentration.

  • The German Guidelines for stainless steel in buildings (Z.30.3-6) issued by the German Institute for Building Technology (DIBt) categorizevarious stainless steel grades into five corrosion resistance classes (CRCs). Only 21 frequently used grades are approved and assigned to these CRCs. To assign new or less commonly used materials, a large program of outdoor exposure tests and laboratory tests is required. The present paper shows theresults of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) tests that can distinguish between different CRCs. Slow strain rate tests (SSRT) were performedin various media and at different temperatures. CRC IV could be distinguished from CRC II and CRC III with a 31.3 % $Cl^-$ as $MgCl_2$ solutionat $140^{\circ}C$. CRC II and CRC III could be differentiated by testing in a 30% $Cl^-$ as $MgCl_2$ solutionat $100^{\circ}C$.

  • Hwangryeon (Coptidis rhizoma) was extracted by methanol and its antimicrobial activities against food spoilage and foodborne disease microorganisms were investigated by the paper-disc method. The microorganisms used in this experiment included 5 species of bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhimurium, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Staphylococcus aureus) and 3 species of fungi (Fusarium solani, Aspergillus flavus, and Penicillium citreonigrum). The Hwangryeon extract showed antimicrobial effect against P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, S. typhimurium, and K. pneumonia. The minimum inhibitory concentration on S. aureus, S. typhimurium, and K. pneumoniae was 300 mg/mL, but on P. aeruginosa it was 200 mg/mL. In the methanol extracts from Hwangryeon, 190 compounds were separated by GC/MS. The extraction yields of phenols, furans, alcohols, acids and esters, ketones, and miscellaneous compounds were 28.10%, 2.67%, 1.79%, 12.89%, and 2.35%, respectively. The phenolic compounds, generally understood to be an antimicrobial active substance, was measured at 28.10%, a relatively remarkable amount.

  • This paper describes on the fabrication and characteristics of hot-film type micro-flowsensors integrated with Pt-RTD's and micro-heaters on the Si substrate, in which MgO thin-films were used as medium layer in order to improve adhesion of Pt thin-films to $SiO_2$ layer, The MgO layer improved adhesion of Pt thin-films to $SiO_2$ layer without any chemical reactions to Pt thin-films under high annealing temperatures. In investigating output characteristics of the fabricated micro-flowsensors, the output voltages increased as gas flow rate and its conductivity increased due to increase of heat-loss from sensor to external. Output voltage was 82 mV at $N_2$ flow rate of 2000 seem/min, heating power of 1.2W.

  • This paper presents a hypothesis and its experimental validation that ∆E (Esec, corr - Ecorr) of cyclic polarization curve of an Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy decreases firstly and then increases with the increasing of corrosion rate or corroded fraction Fcorr of alloy surface. The minimum value of ∆E is obtained when Fcorr ≈ 50%. In addition, a proportional relationship between ∆E and |50% - Fcorr| was found. This non-monotonic relation between ∆E and extent of localized corrosion indicates that additional attention should be paid on using ∆E to assess localized corrosion behaviour of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys.

  • This paper investigated the mechanical and electrochemical properties of Al alloys in a slow strain rate test under various potential conditions. In general, Al and Al alloys do not corrode on formation of a film that has resistance to corrosion in neutral solutions. In seawater, however, $Cl^-$ ions lead to the formation and destruction of a passive film. In a potentiostatic experiment, the current density after 1200 sec in the potential range of $-0.68{\sim}-1.5 V$ was low. Comparison of the maximum tensile strength, elongation, and time to fracture indicated that the optimum protection potential range was from -1.5 to -0.7 V(SSCE).
