We determined the toxicity of mixtures of ethyl acetate (EA), isopropyl alcohol (IPA), methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), toluene (TOL) and xylene (XYL) with half-maximal effective concentration ($EC_{50}$) values obtained using human hepatocytes cells. According to these data, quantitative property-activity relationships (QPAR) models were successfully proposed to predict the toxicity of mixtures by multiple linear regressions (MLR). The leave-one-out cross validation method was used to find the best subsets of descriptors in the learning methods. Significant differences in physico-chemical properties such as boiling point (BP), specific gravity (SG), Reid vapor pressure (rVP) and flash point (FP) were observed between the single substances and the mixtures. The $EC_{50}$ of the mixture of EA and IPA was significantly lower than that of contained TOL and XYL. The mixture toxicity was related to the mixing ratio of MEK, TOL and XYL (MLR equation $EC_{50}=3.3081-2.5018{\times}TOL-3.2595{\times}XYL-12.6596{\times}MEK{\times}XYL$), as well as to BP, SG, VP and FP (MLR equation $EC_{50}=1.3424+6.2250{\times}FP-7.1198{\times}SG{\times}FP-0.03013{\times}rVP{\times}FP$). These results suggest that QPAR-based models could accurately predict the toxicity of polar and nonpolar mixtures used in rotogravure printing industries.
Rapid production of nitric oxide (NO) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been implicated in the regulation of innate immunity in plants. A potato calcium-dependent protein kinase (StCDPK5) activates an NADPH oxidase StRBOHA to D by direct phosphorylation of N-terminal regions, and heterologous expression of StCDPK5 and StRBOHs in Nicotiana benthamiana results in oxidative burst. The transgenic potato plants that carry a constitutively active StCDPK5 driven by a pathogen-inducible promoter of the potato showed high resistance to late blight pathogen Phytophthora infestans accompanied by HR-like cell death and $H_2O_2$ accumulation in the attacked cells. In contrast, these plants showed high susceptibility to early blight necrotrophic pathogen Alternaria solani, suggesting that oxidative burst confers high resistance to biotrophic pathogen, but high susceptibility to necrotrophic pathogen. NO and ROS synergistically function in defense responses. Two MAPK cascades, MEK2-SIPK and cytokinesis-related MEK1-NTF6, are involved in the induction of NbRBOHB gene in N. benthamiana. On the other hand, NO burst is regulated by the MEK2-SIPK cascade. Conditional activation of SIPK in potato plants induces oxidative and NO bursts, and confers resistance to both biotrophic and necrotrophic pathogens, indicating the plants may have obtained during evolution the signaling pathway which regulates both NO and ROS production to adapt to wide-spectrum pathogens.

Background: Ginsenoside Rg1 was shown to exert ligand-independent activation of estrogen receptor (ER) via mitogen-activated protein kinase-mediated pathway. Our study aimed to delineate the mechanisms by which Rg1 activates the rapid ER signaling pathways. Methods: ER-positive human breast cancer MCF-7 cells and ER-negative human embryonic kidney HEK293 cells were treated with Rg1 ($10^{-12}M$, $10^{-8}M$), $17{\beta}$-estradiol ($10^{-8}M$), or vehicle. Immunoprecipitation was conducted to investigate the interactions between signaling protein and ER in MCF-7 cells. To determine the roles of these signaling proteins in the actions of Rg1, small interfering RNA or their inhibitors were applied. Results: Rg1 rapidly induced $ER{\alpha}$ translocation to plasma membrane via caveolin-1 and the formation of signaling complex involving linker protein (Shc), insulin-like growth factor-I receptor, modulator of nongenomic activity of ER (MNAR), $ER{\alpha}$, and cellular nonreceptor tyrosine kinase (c-Src) in MCF-7 cells. The induction of extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase and mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase (MEK) phosphorylation in MCF-7 cells by Rg1 was suppressed by cotreatment with small interfering RNA against these signaling proteins. The stimulatory effects of Rg1 on MEK phosphorylation in these cells were suppressed by both PP2 (Src kinase inhibitor) and AG1478 [epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitor]. In addition, Rg1-induced estrogenic activities, EGFR and MEK phosphorylation in MCF-7 cells were abolished by cotreatment with G15 (G protein-coupled estrogen receptor-1 antagonist). The increase in intracellular cyclic AMP accumulation, but not Ca mobilization, in MCF-7 cells by Rg1 could be abolished by G15. Conclusion: Ginsenoside Rg1 exerted estrogenic actions by rapidly inducing the formation of ER containing signalosome in MCF-7 cells. Additionally, Rg1 could activate EGFR and c-Src ER-independently and exert estrogenic effects via rapid activation of membrane-associated ER and G protein-coupled estrogen receptor.

This study was performed to compare with desorption efficiency and storage stability of CSC and CMS tubes for Ketones in workplace air. 1. The best desorbing solution for CSC tube was 1 % or 3 % dimethylformamide(DMF) in carbon disulfide($CS_2$). The desorption efficiencies were 96.40 % for cyclohexanone, 94.86 % for acetone, 96.96 % for methyl ethyl ketone(MEK), 103.44 % for methyl isobutyl ketone(MIBK), 100.17 % for methyl amyl ketone(MAK), 100.43 % for methyl butyl ketone(MBK), 97.01 % for toluene and 99.33 % for trichloroethylene(TCE). 2. The best desorbing solution for CMS tube was 1 % or 3 % DMF in $CS_2$. The desorption efficiencies were 96.42 % for cyclohexanone, 98.53 % for acetone, 99.67 % for MEK, 105.48 % for MIBK, 100.13 % for MAK, 100.13 % for MBK, 95.42 % for toluene and 98.15 % for TCE. 3. In the storage condition at room temperature($20^{\circ}C$), the recovery rates of cyclohexanone and MEK on CSC tube were rapidly decreased 30.9 % and 50.9 % after 4 weeks, respectively. The recovery rates of all of 6 ketones and 2 nonpolar solvents were shown over 80 % after 1 week in the storage condition of refrigerate temperature($-4^{\circ}C$), and were kept over 80 % after 4 weeks in the storage condition of freezer temperature($-20^{\circ}C$). 4. The recovery rates of cyclohexanone on CMS tube were 80.6 % for 1 week after and 60.5 % for 4 weeks after at room temperature($20^{\circ}C$). The recovery rates of cyclohexanone were shown 80.6 % for 1 week after and 60.5 % for 4 weeks after at $-4^{\circ}C$, and of 6 ketones and 2 non-polar solvents were kept stable over 85 % at $-4^{\circ}C$ and over 97 % at $-20^{\circ}C$ for 4 weeks after. In conclusion, the best desorbing solution was 1 % or 3 % DMF in $CS_2$ and more appropriate sorbent tube for ketones and non-polar solvents was CMS than CSC. We recommend CSC tube would be useful if the samples analyzed within 1 week because CMS tubes are more expensive than CSC tubes. However, if the storage time is needed more than 3 weeks, CMS tubes should be suitable and the storage condition should be below $-20^{\circ}C$.

This is a study on the volatile organic compounds(VOCs) concentrator with zeolite adsorptive honey rotor and catalytic combustion system for abating VOCs emitted from printing industry. VOCs emitted from the printing industry is mainly caused by organic solvent of printing ink. The content of organic solvents in printing ink varies from 40% to 75% and its content in the gravure ink is higher than that in any other ink. The average concentrations of each VOCs are 139 ppm for toluene, 152.1 ppm for MEK, 256.9 ppm for methanol and 42.9 ppm for isopropyl alcohol. We used zeolite honeycomb for absorbent of VOCs concentrator and palladium for catalyst combustion system. This system abated over 96% of emitted total VOCs, 98% of toluene, 100% of MEK, 92% of methanol and, 100% of isopropyl alcohol. It is concluded that the low-leveled high-volume VOCs emitted from printing process were removed almost by concentrator with zeolite adsorptive honey rotor and catalytic combustion system.
The recovery of trace volatile organic components from water by pervaporation was investigated. Permeation experiments through homogeneous polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) membrane was carried out and the effect of feed concentrations and membrane thicknesses on the permeation characteristics were investigated. A solution-diffusion model is used to describe the pervaporation transport mechanism. In homogeneous PDMS membrane it appeared that the selectivities of MEK and toluene are constant, and that organic flux has a linear relationship with feed concentration. These results indicate that the coupling effects between organics were negligible. The selectivity of PDMS membranes is invariant with respect to the membrane thickness. The intrinsic membrane permeability of organic components determined by using a solution-diffusion model. Comparing with various composite type membrane, the membrane using PEG treated nonwoven fabric as sublayer showed the best performance in VOC recovery by pervaporation.

In summary, the rutin metabolite DHT significantly reduced EGF-induced neoplastic transformation in JB6 P+ cells. This inhibition was mediated mainly by blocking the Raf/MEK/ERK signaling pathway and subsequent suppression of AP-1 activities. DHT attenuated Raf-1 kinase activity by directly binding to Raf-1 in vitro and ex vivo. Taken together, these results suggest that Raf-1 may be a critical molecular target to suppress DHT-induced neoplastic transformation, which is mainly attributable to the chemopreventive potential of several foods containing rutin.
