Product Attributes and New Product Strategies Affecting Consumer Purchases of Lycium Chinense (구기자의 구매속성과 신제품 전략)

  • We studied new product presentation strategies for cheongyang Lycium chinense, and the attributes of consumers purchasing cheongyang; this is a popular herbal medicine. Attributes are characteristics or properties of a product, and generally refer to features regarded as evaluative criteria during decision-making. The key phrases found on data analysis were "free from disease" and "health". Makers or producers must conduct research and development to promote consumer demand for Lycium chinense, and they must overcome any consumer-held negative images of Lycium chinense attributes.

Evaluation of Antiaging Activity on Lycium chinense Miller. Extracts (구기자 추출물의 항노화 활성 평가)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the functionality of Lycium chinense Miller. as a functional cosmetic material. The total polyphenol content in the extract was 17.3 mg/mL, and as a result of confirming cytotoxicity through MTT assay before the enzyme experiment, it was confirmed that it did not affect cell growth at all concentrations below 1000 ㎍/mL. As a result of conducting DPPH radical scavenging tests as an antioxidant efficacy test, it showed 84.97% scavenging ability at a concentration of 1000 ㎍/mL, and showed very excellent antioxidant efficacy in SOD-like activity test with a result of 80.54% at 1000 ㎍/mL. The measured elastase inhibitory activity, the inhibition rate of 50.93% was observed at 1000 ㎍/mL, indicating that the extract of Lycium chinense Miller. was effective in inhibiting elastase. All these findings suggested that 70% ethanol extract of Lycium chinense Miller. was confirmed as a functional cosmetic material by confirming its antioxidant and anti-wrinkle efficacy.

Antimicrobial Property of $(+)-Lyoniresinol-3{\alpha}-O-\beta-D-Glucopyranoside$ Isolated From the Root Bark of Lycium chinense Miller Against Human Pathogenic Microorganisms

  • [ $(+)-Lyoniresinol-3{\alpha}-O-\beta-D-glucopyranoside$ ] (1) was isolated from an ethyl acetate extract of the root bark from Lycium chinense Miller, and its structure was determined using 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy including DEPT, HMQC, and HMBC. $(+)-Lyoniresinol-3{\alpha}-O-\beta-D-glucopyranoside$ exhibited potent antimicrobial activity against antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolated from patients, and human pathogenic fungi without having any hemolytic effect on human erythrocytes. In particular, compound 1 induced the accumulation of intracellular trehalose on C. albicans as stress response to the drug, and disrupted the dimorphic transition that forms pseudo-hyphae caused by the pathogenesis. This indicates that $(+)-Lyoniresinol-3{\alpha}-O-\beta-D-glucopyranoside$ has excellent potential as a lead compound for the development of antibiotic agents.

Strength Properties of Boxthorn(Lycium chinense Mill) Fruit-Stem Joints (구기자 열매와 과병 접합부의 강도 특성)

  • The strength of the connecting joint of boxthorn(Lycium chinense Mill) fruits to tree twigs was determined experimentally at several pulling angles(0$^{\circ}$, 15$^{\circ}$, 30$^{\circ}$,45$^{\circ}$and 60$^{\circ}$) and at different harvesting seasons from August to November 1999 using an universal testing machine. The detachment force of mature fruits of boxthorn decreased as the pulling angle increased and varied with the harvesting season. The detachment force however did not gradually decreased as the harvesting season advanced due to difference of maturity of fruits from one harvesting season to another. Among three varieties of boxthron Cheongyang gugija Cheongyang native and Cheongyang #2, the maximum detachment force was 1.24 N at the pulling angle of zero degree. The highest detachment forve(1.29 N) of mature fruits of boxthorn appeared at the harvesting season of August, 1999.

  • Detachment rate of mature fruits of the Lycium chinense Mill with various frequency, amplitude, and shaking time using an experimental vibratory system was analyzed. The experimental vibratory system was designed such that the frequency, amplitude, and shaking time could be controlled easily. The detachment rate increased as the frequency increased at constant amplitude and increased as the amplitude increased at constant frequency. The contents of the detached immature fruit, however, also increased as the frequency and amplitude increased, which was undesirable for the detachment efficiency considering the only mature 900 rpm and amplitude of 35 m for the shaking time of three seconds.

  • Phytochemical investigation of Lycium chinense fruits led to isolation of a new pyrrole compound. The structure of this compound was confirmed as a 5-methoxymethyl-lH-pyrrole-2-carbaaldehyde, a new natural product, by interpretation of 1D ($^1H$, $^{13}C$) and 2D (HMQC, HMBC) spectroscopic data along with HRMS and IR spectroscopic data.

  • According to the research of the cultivation result on the spot farmers for 5 years in order to investigate its cultivation conditions and problems of Lycium chinense Mill, the development of the variety with early mature, pest tolerance, and high yielding is urgent and it is call for the development of rooted cutting cultivation by testing of bed soil, growth regulator and cutting times. The development of cultivation method with planting year, planting density, supplementary period and amounts of supplementary of Lycium chinense Mill planted in growing field are required and for the disease and the effective control of disease and insect pest resistance is needed by auxotrophic fertilizing and organic agricultural method, met by agricultural chemicals.

Antihepatotoxic zeaxanthins from the Fruits of Lycium chinense

  • A $CHCl_3$:MeOH extract of the fruit of Lycium chinense Mill. (Solanaceae) was found to afford significant protection against carbon tetrachloride-induced toxicity in primary cultures of rat hepatocytes. Subsequent activity-guided fractionation resulted in the isolation of zeaxanthin and zeaxanthin dipalmitate as antihepatotoxic components. Incubation of injured hepatocytes with zeaxanthin dipalmitate reduced the levels of glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) and sorbitol dehydrogenase (SDH) released from damaged cells to 60.5% and 76.3% of those released from untreated controls, respectively. Zeaxanthin also reduced the levels of GPT and SDH to 68.5% and 61.3% of the levels of those released from the untreated contro. The results confirm the hepatoprotective activities of zeaxanthins. Antihepatotoxic activities of zeaxanthins are comparable to that of silybin.

A New Phenolic Amide from Lycium chinense Miller

  • A new phenolic amide, dihydro-N-caffeoyltyramine (1) was isolated from the root bark of Lycium chinense Miller, along with known compounds, trans-N-caffeoyltyramine (2), cis-N-caffeoyltyramine (3), and lyoniresinol $3{\alpha}-Ο-{\beta}-D-glucopyranoside$ (4). Their structures were determined by spectroscopic analysis. A NBT superoxide scavenging assay revealed that three phenolic amides showed potent antioxidative activity.

Multivariate statistical analysis of the comparative antioxidant activity of the total phenolics and tannins in the water and ethanol extracts of dried goji berry (Lycium chinense) fruits

  • Antioxidant activity in water and ethanol extracts of dried Lycium chinense fruit, as a result of the total phenolic and tannin content, was measured using a number of chemical and biochemical assays for radical scavenging and inhibition of lipid peroxidation, with the analysis being extended by applying a bootstrapping statistical method. Previous statistical analyses mostly provided linear correlation and regression analyses between antioxidant activity and increasing concentrations of phenolics and tannins in a concentration-dependent mode. The present study showed that multiple component or multivariate analysis by applying multiple regression analysis or regression planes proved more informative than linear regression analysis of the relationship between the concentration of individual components and antioxidant activity. In this paper, we represented the multivariate analysis of antioxidant activities of both phenolic and tannin contents combined in the water and ethanol extracts, which revealed the hidden observations that were not evident from linear statistical analysis.
