  • $ZnGa_2O_4$ powder were prepared by combustion method and $Mn^{2+}$ ions, a green luminescence activator, and $Cr^{3+}$ ions, a red luminescence activator were separately doped into $ZnGa_2O_4$. The characteristics of the synthesized nano powder were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and photoluminescence (PL). The various $ZnGa_2O_4$ peaks, with the (311) main peak, appeared at all sintering temperature XRD patterns. The PL specctrums of $ZnGa_2O_4$ powder showed main peak of 425 nm, and maximum intensity at the sintering temperature of $1200^{\circ}C$. SEM images shown that nano sized particles(about 200 nm) were of spherical shape. The characteristics of $ZnGa_2O_4$ containing 0.004 mol $Mn^{2+}$(505 nm, green) and $ZnGa_2O_4$ containg 0.002 mol $Cr^{3+}$ (696 nm, red) were shown to be the best.

  • Europium-activated $Ga_2$$O_3$ phosphor powders were prepared by Pechini method from the mixed aqueous solutions of gallium(III) nitrate, europium(III) nitrate, ethylene glycol and citric acid. The phase formation process and particle shape of the powders obtained were investigated by means of TG/DTA, XRD and SEM. It was found that the powders were amorphous or ${\gamma}$-$Ga_2$$O_3$-like phase up to $500^{\circ}C$ and then transformed into $\beta$- $Ga_2$$O_3$ phase above $600 ^{\circ}C$. The powders calcined below $1000^{\circ}C$ were spherical and nanometer-sized. Photoluminescence spectra measured at room temperature showed that the highest luminescence intensity was obtained for the sample synthesized under the conditions of 2 mol% Eu concentration and heat treatment at $1000^{\circ}C$.

  • $Y_2O_3$:Eu red phosphor was prepared by microwave synthesis. The crystal phase, particle morphology, and luminescent properties were characterized by XRD, SEM, and spectrofluorometer, respectively. The prepared $Y_2O_3$:Eu particles had good crystallinity and strong red emission under ultravioletet excitation. The crystallite size increased with calcination temperature and satuarated at $1200^{\circ}C$. The primary particle size initially formed was varied from 30 to 450 nm with microwave-irradiation (MI) time. It was found that the emission intensity of $Y_2O_3$:Eu phosphor strongly depends on the MI time. In terms of the emission intensity, it was recommended that the MI time should be less than 15 min. The emission intensity of $Y_2O_3$:Eu phosphor prepared by microwave syntehsis strongly depended on the crystallite size of which an optimal size range was 50-60 nm.

  • The electrical leakage levels of GaN-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) containing leakage paths are estimated using photoluminescence (PL) and photovoltaic properties under photoexcitation conditions. The PL intensity and open-circuit voltage (VOC) decrease because of carrier leakages depending on photoexcitation conditions when compared with reference values for typical LED chips without leakage paths. Changes of photovoltage-photocurrent characteristics and PL intensity due to carrier leakage are employed to assess the leakage current levels of LEDs with leakage paths. The current corresponding to the reduced VOC of an LED with leakage from the photovoltaic curve of a reference LED without leakage is matched with the leakage current calculated using the PL intensity reduction ratio and short-circuit current of the LED with leakage. The current needed to increase the voltage for an LED with a leakage under photoexcitation from VOC of the LED up to VOC of a reference LED without a leakage is identical to the additional current needed for optical turn-on of the LED with a leakage. The leakage current level estimated using the PL and photovoltaic properties under photoexcitation is consistent with the leakage level measured from the voltage-current characteristic obtained under current injection conditions.

  • Red-emitting $Eu^{3+}$-activated $(Y_{0.95-x}Al_x)VO_4$ (0 < x $\leq$ 0.12) nanophosphors with the particle size of ~30 nm and the high crystallinity have been successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal reaction. In the synthetic process, deionized water as a solvent and ethylene glycol as a capping agent were used. The crystalline phase, particle morphology, and the photoluminescence properties of the excitation spectrum, emission intensity, color coordinates and decay time, of the prepared $(Y_{0.95-x}Al_x)VO_4:Eu^{3+}$ nanophosphors were compared with those of the $YVO_4:Eu^{3+}$. Under 147 nm excitation, $(Y_{0.95-x}Al_x)VO_4$ nanophosphors showed strong red luminescence due to the $^5D_0-^7F_2$ transition of $Eu^{3+}$ at 619 nm. The luminescence intensity of $YVO_4:Eu^{3+}$ enhanced with partial substitution of $Al^{3+}$ for $Y^{3+}$ and the maximum emission intensity was accomplished at the $Al^{3+}$ content of 10 mol%. By the addition of $Al^{3+}$, decay time of the $(Y,Al)VO_4:Eu^{3+}$ nanophosphor was decreased in comparison with that of the $YVO_4:Eu^{3+}$ nanophosphor. Also, the substitution of $Al^{3+}$ for $Y^{3+}$ invited the improvement of color coordinates due to the increase of R/O ratio in emission intensity. For the formation of transparent layer, the red nanophosphors were fabricated to the paste with ethyl celluloses, anhydrous terpineol, ethanol and deionized water. By screen printing method, a transparent red phosphor layer was formed onto a glass substrate from the paste. The transparent red phosphor layer exhibited the red emission at 619 nm under 147 nm excitation and the transmittance of ~80% at 600 nm.

  • $Ce^{3+}$-doped yttrium aluminum gallium garnet (YAGG:$Ce^{3+}$), which is a green-emitting phosphor, was synthesized by solid state reaction using ${\alpha}$-phase or ${\gamma}$-phase of nano-sized $Al_2O_3$ as the Al source. The processing conditions and the chemical composition of phosphor for the maximum emission intensity were optimized on the basis of emission intensity under vacuum UV excitation. The optimum heating temperature for phosphor preparation was $1550^{\circ}C$. Photoluminescence properties of the synthesized phosphor were investigated in detail. From the excitation and emission spectra, it was confirmed that the YAGG:$Ce^{3+}$ phosphors effectively absorb the vacuum UV of 120-200 nm and emit green light positioned around 530 nm. The crystalline phase of the alumina nanoparticles affected the particle size and the luminescence property of the synthesized phosphors. Nano-sized ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ was more effective for the achievement of higher emission intensity than was nano-sized ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$. This discrepancy is considered to be because the diffusion of $Al^{3+}$ into $Y_2O_3$ lattice is dependent on the crystalline phase of $Al_2O_3$, which affects the phase transformation of YAGG:$Ce^{3+}$ phosphors. The optimum chemical composition, having the maximum emission intensity, was $(Y_{2.98}Ce_{0.02})(Al_{2.8}Ga_{1.8})O_{11.4}$ prepared with ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$. On the other hand, the decay time of the YAGG:$Ce^{3+}$ phosphors, irrespective of the crystalline phase of the nano-sized alumina source, was below 1 ms due to the allowed $5d{\rightarrow}4f$ transition of the $Ce^{3+}$ activator.

  • Silica encapsulated ZnSe quantum dots (QDs) were prepared by employing two microemulsion systems: AOT/water/cyclohexane microemulsions containing ZnSe quantum dots with NP5/water/cyclohexane microemulsions containing tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS). Using this method, cubic zinc blende nanoparticles (3 nm in diameter) were synthesized and encapsulated by silica nanoparticles (20 nm in diameter). The temperature dependence of photoluminescence (PL) for silica-encapsulated ZnSe QDs was investigated to evaluate this material as a temperature sensor media. The fluorescence emission intensity of silica-encapsulated ZnSe nanoparticles (NPs) was decreased with an increase of ambient temperature over the range from $30^{\circ}C$ to $60^{\circ}C$ and a linear relationship between the temperature and the emission intensity was observed. In addition, the temperature dependence of PL intensity for silica-encapsulated ZnSe NPs showed a reversible pattern on ambient temperature. A reversible temperature dependence of the luminescence combined with its insensitivity toward quenching by oxygen due to silica coating established this material as an attractive media for temperature sensor applications.

  • Many dinoflagellates produce bioluminescence. To estimate the intensity of bioluminescence produced by populations of the heterotrophic dinoflagellates Noctiluca scintillans and Polykrikos kofoidii and autotrophic dinoflagellate Alexandrium mediterraneum in Korean waters, we measured cellular bioluminescence intensity as a function of water temperature and calculated population bioluminescence intensity with cell abundances and water temperature. The mean 200-second-integrated bioluminescence intensity per cell (BLcell) of N. scintillans satiated with the chlorophyte Dunaliella salina decreased continuously with increasing water temperature from 5 to 25℃. However, the BLcell of P. kofoidii satiated with the mixotrophic dinoflagellate Alexandrium minutum continuously increased from 5 to 15℃ but decreased at temperatures exceeding this (to 30℃). Similarly, the BLcell of A. mediterraneum continuously increased from 10 to 20℃ but decreased between 20 and 30℃. The difference between highest and lowest BLcell of N. scintillans, P. kofoidii, and A. mediterraneum at the tested water temperatures was 3.5, 11.8, and 21.0 times, respectively, indicating that water temperature clearly affected BLcell. The highest estimated population bioluminescence intensity (BLpopul) of N. scintillans in Korean waters in 1998-2022 was 4.22 × 1013 relative light unit per liter (RLU L-1), which was 1,850 and 554,000 times greater than that of P. kofoidii and A. mediterraneum, respectively. This indicates that N. scintillans populations produced much brighter bioluminescence in Korean waters than the populations of P. kofoidii or A. mediterraneum.

  • Premixed flame is better than diffusion flame to accomplish a high loading combustion. Since the turbulent characteristics of unburned mixture has a great influence on the flame structure, it is general that many researchers realize a high loading combustion with strengthening turbulent intensity of unburned mixture. Because turbulent premixed flame reacts efficiently on the condition of distributed reaction region, we made high turbulent premixed flame in the doubled impingement field. We investigated turbulent characteristics of unburned mixture with increasing shear force and visualized flames with direct and Schlieren photographs. And the combustion characteristics of flame was elucidated by instantaneous temperature measurement with a thermocouple, by ion currents with a micro electrostatic probe, by radical luminescence intensity and local equivalence ratio. Extremely strong turbulent of small scale is generated by impingement of mixture, and turbulent intensity of unburned mixture increased with the mean velocity. As a result of direct photographs, visible region of flame became longer due to increasing central direction flux. But as strengthed turbulent intensity, visible region of flame turned to shorter and reaction occurred efficiently. As strengthened turbulent intensity of mixture with increasing flux of central direction, maximum fluctuating temperature region moved to radial direction and fluctuation of temperature became lower. The reason is influx of central direction which caused flame zone to move toward radial direction, to maintain flame zone stable and to make flame scale smaller.

  • In spite of many studies of the acoustic field visualization by using sonoluminescence phenomena, the visualization method has not been used widely because it needs high acoustic intensity to get the luminescence intensity enough to observe. Recently, the digital camera with high resolution and big memory makes it possible to get the digital image data even though the brightness of the image is too weak to observe with naked eyes. In this study we investigated the variation of sonoluminescence intensity with the acoustic intensity from an ultrasonic transducer. From this result, the inverse function, which makes the tendency of the variation to linear, was obtained. Using the order of the inverse function, we can expect a matching function. Applying the matching function to digital image data, the distribution of the histogram could be controlled appropriately and the image from relatively weak acoustic intensity could be enhanced by the method.
