  • Friction and wear behavior of a unidirectional high modulus carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composite exposed to high and low humidity was experimentally examined with various sliding speeds. The results show that the moisture at the sliding surface greatly influences friction and wear properties of the composite. It is also discoverd that the difference in friction and wear behavior between samples with different fiber orientations is mainly due to the anisotropic properties caused by the microstructure of oriented graphite crystals in the carbon fibers and the macrostructure of fiber orientation in the matrix.

  • We report results on microtribological studies of chemically grafted nanoscale polymer layers of different architecture with thickness below 30 nm. We have fabricated the molecular lubrication coatings from elastomeric tri-block copolymers and tested two different designs of corresponding nanocomposite coatings. We observed a significant reduction of friction forces and an increase of the wear stability when a minute amount of oil was trapped within the grafted polymer layer. These polymer gel layers exhibited a very steady friction response and a small value of the coefficient of friction as compared to the initial polymer coating. A polymer 'triplex' coating has been formed by a multiple grafting technique. The unique design of this layer Includes a hard-soft-hard architecture with a compliant rubber interlayer mediating localized stresses transferred through the topmost hard layer. This architecture provides a non-linear mechanical response under a normal compression stress and allows additional dissipation of mechanical energy via the elastic rubber interlayer.

  • Rolling bearings are assorted one of the most important machine elements. The various functions of bearings are greatly influenced by grease, and higher performance of rolling bearing greases is required to improve rolling bearing lubrication. The two conditions for optimum grease synthesis were selected by SSRED (Six Sigma Robust Engineering Design) program by using dropping points and OIT values respectively. And the optimized two urea/ether oil greases were synthesized to compare the performance. The typical physical properties of grease were investigated. And life test of these greases was conducted by rolling bearing grease life tester The characteristics of the greases before and after life test were investigated using FTIR, microscope, SEM, TG/DSC, OIT and TAN meter The optimized two greases showed longer life time than typical urea/ether oil grease. The optimized grease by means of OIT value showed higher performance such as long life time. low TAN value and high oil bleeding amount in comparison with the optimized grease using dropping point.

  • Nanofluids are dispersions of particles smaller than 100 nm (nanoparticles) in base fluids. They exhibit high thermal conductivity and are mainly applied in cooling applications. Nanolubricants use nanoparticles in base oils as lubricant additives, and have recently started gathering increased attention owing to their potential to improve the tribological and thermal performances of various machinery. Nanolubricants reduce friction and wear, mainly by the action of nanoparticles; however, only a few studies have considered the rheological properties of lubricants. In this study, we adopt a parallel slider bearing model that does not generate geometrical wedge effects, and conduct thermohydrodynamic (THD) analyses to evaluate the effect of higher thermal conductivity and viscosity, which are the main rheological properties of nanolubricants, on the lubrication performances. We use a commercial computational fluid dynamics code, FLUENT, to numerically analyze the continuity, Navier-Stokes, energy equations with temperature-viscosity-density relations, and thermal conductivity and viscosity models of the nanolubricant. The results show the temperature and pressure distributions, load-carrying capacity (LCC), and friction force for three film-temperature boundary conditions (FTBCs). The effects of the higher thermal conductivity and viscosity of the nanolubricant on the LCC and friction force differ significantly, according to the FTBC. The thermal conductivity increases with temperature, improving the cooling performance, reducing LCC, and slightly increasing the friction. The increase in viscosity increases both the LCC and friction. The analysis method in this study can be applied to develop nanolubricants that can improve the tribological and cooling performances of various equipment; however, additional research is required on this topic.

  • Although vegetable oils provide good lubricity, they still need optimization by certain additive technology for practical applications. ZDTP improve antiwear properties of vegetable oils. However the additive performance depends on quality of the base Oil. Antioxidants were applied to prevent the auto-oxidation of vegetable oils. Good synergistic effect of anti-wear and antioxidant additives was confirmed.
