  • Wind energy, which is one of renewable energy, would be useful resources that can be applied to making energy recycling villages without using fossil fuels. This study analyzed energy potential on wind power considering weather condition in three rural villages and compared with energy consumption surveyed. A wind turbine system in the 5kW class can generate 26.1%, 73.9% and 39.5% of the yearly mean consumption of electric power per house in Makhyun, Boojang and Soso respectively. A 750kW wind turbine system can generate 1.7%, 30.3% and 22.1% of the total amount of electric power consumption in three study villages respectively. Wind power energy density was too low in Makhyun and Soso, so it is determined that the application of wind turbine system is almost impossible. Wind energy potential was generally low in Boojang either, but it is evaluated that there is a little possibility of wind power generation relatively. For practical application of renewable energy to rural green-village planning, assessment of energy potential for the local area should be preceded.

  • There are many battery-based wearable devices for healthcare and medical applications, but there is a user's inconvenience to charge battery frequently due to insufficient power management. In this paper, we propose a tickless-based operating system and power management algorithm that can effectively utilize the power management provided by HW, and propose a cold restart method that consumes the minimum power at the board level. The operating system of the proposed technique has reduced the power consumption from 2 times to 33 times in the four scenarios modeling the wearable device application compared to the existing operating system.

  • For battery-powered device applications, which grow rapidly in the electronic market today, low-power becomes one of the most important design issues of CMOS VLSI circuits. A multi-VDD system, which uses more than one power-supply voltage in the same system, is an effective way to reduce the power consumption without degrading operating speed. However, in the multi-VDD system, level converters should be inserted to prevent a large static current flow for the low-to-high conversion. The insertion of the level converters induces the overheads of power consumption, delay, and area. In this paper, we propose a new level converter which can provide the level up/down conversions for the various input and output voltages. Since the proposed level converter uses only one power-supply voltage, it has an advantage of reducing the complexity in physical design. In addition, the proposed level converter provides lower power and higher speed, compared to existing level converters.

  • It is a great interest to convert more energy in the heat source into the power and to improve the efficiency of power generating processes. Since the efficiency of power generating processes becomes poorer as the temperature of the source decreases, to use an ammonia-water mixture instead of water as working fluid is a possible way to improve the efficiency of the system. In this work performance of ammonia-water regenerative Rankine cycle is investigated for the purpose of extracting maximum power from low-temperature waste heat in the form of sensible energy. Special attention is paid to the effect of system parameters such as mass fraction of ammonia and turbine inlet pressure on the characteristics of system. Results show that the power output increases with the mass fraction of ammonia in the mixture, however workable range of the mass fraction becomes narrower as turbine inlet pressure increases and is able to reach 16.5kW per unit mass flow rate of source air at $180^{\circ}C$.

  • This paper presented about the system for controlling a wireless power transmission using bluetooth protocol. Bluetooth protocol has been applied in many fields that communicate with data and audio signal in short range. Recently, however, Bluetooth low energy(BLE) more simple than the existing protocol is standardized and is widely used in medical applications and consumer electronics that handle small amount of sensor data and transmit by the low power control signal. It has also been adopted as the standard for the control in the wireless power transfer system. In this paper, We analysed and described the bluetooth low energy protocol techniques for controlling the wireless power transfer system.

  • This paper presents a fully synthesizable low power interconnect bus for millimeter-scale wireless sensor nodes. A segmented ring bus topology minimizes the required chip real estate with low input/output pad count for ultra-small form factors. By avoiding the conventional open drain-based solution, the bus can be fully synthesizable. Low power is achieved by obviating a need for local oscillators in member nodes. Also, aggressive power gating allows low-power standby mode with only 53 gates powered on. An integrated wakeup scheme is compatible with a power management unit that has nW standby mode. A 3-module system including the bus is fabricated in a 180 nm process. The entire system consumes 8 nW in standby mode, and the bus achieves 17.5 pJ/bit/chip.

  • Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) application study on enhancing the flexibility of AC power system has continued to make progress. A thyristor-controlled series capacitor (TCSC) is a useful FACTS device that can control the power flow by adjusting line impedances and minimize the loss of power flow and voltage drop in a transmission system by adjusting line impedances. Reduced power flow loss leads to increased loadability, low system loss, and improved stability of the power system. This study proposes the optimal location and compensation rate method for TCSCs, by considering both the power system loss and voltage drop of transmission systems. The proposed method applies a multi-objective function consisting of a minimizing function for power flow loss and voltage drop. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated using IEEE 14- and a 30-bus system.

Requirements for energy conservation and supplied power quality in customers are increasing significantly because of their effects on the production cost and efficiency. Thus, the development of low cost power management system which can can operate in domestic power system properly is substantially requested. In this research, operation software for real time monitoring and control system in customer power system has been developed to achieve the above purposes. The development of the operating software and related technologies are expected to be applied successfully for reducing electricity cost, enhancing power quality, determining facility expansion planning, operating optimal power system, increasing production efficiency, and reducing maintenance cost.

  • In this paper a method of design and Implementation of RFID based control system for reducing standby power consumption at the power outlet is described. The system is composed of a RF controlled power outlet having relay and an active RFID tag communicating with the RF reader module controlling the relay. When the tag carried by human approaches to the RF reader the reader recognizes the tag and switch off the relay based on the RSSI level measurement. A low power packet prediction algorithm has been used to decrease the DC power consumption at both the tag and the RF reader. The result of experiment shows that successful operation of the relay control has been obtained while low power operation of the tag and the reader is achieved using above algorithm. Also setting the distance between the reader and the tag by controlling transmission power of the tag and adjusting the duty cycle of the packet waiting time when the reader is in idle state allows us to reduce DC power consumption at both the reader and the tag.

  • This paper mainly proposes the protective coordination scheme of the microgrid system. The microgrid protection is identical to the conventional protection system separating the normal part and contingency part to reduce damage when the contingency occur at power cables, facilities. But they are different in the protection type. The conventional protection system only considers unidirectional current. However the microgrid protection should be considered not only unidirectional current but also backfeed current because various microsources and loads are installed in the microgrid system. In case the contingency occurs in microsource, when microgrid is interconnected to grid, the protection system should be configured to not separate microgrid from grid before the microsource is isolated to microgrid. And in case of fault occur in power system, the microsources should not isolated to microgrid before the static switch at PCC is tripped to separate from power system. Considering these characteristic of microgird, this paper proposes the protective coordination scheme of microgrid and implemented the on-line real time monitoring system. Especially in case the microgrid is connected to low voltage distribution system with 220/380V voltage level, the proposed protection method with power IT technology can solve the problems when the existing protective devices only applied to the microgrid system.
