  • Even if it is important to transmit high rate multimedia information without any transmission errors for surveillance systems, it is difficult to achieve error-free transmission due to infra-less adhoc networks. In order to reduce the transmission errors furthermore, additional signal overheads or retransmission of signals should be required, but they may lead to transmission delay. This paper represents a study on low delay and adaptive video transmission for the unmanned surveillance systems by developing system protocols. In addition, we introduce an efficient and adaptive control algorithm using system parameters for exploiting unmanned surveillance system properly over multi-channels.

  • A ZVT (zero voltage transition) converter for SRM (switched reluctance motor) drives is proposed in this study. By adding a ZVT-chopping switch in the front-end, all switches in the machine side converter can be operated without any chopping to regulate phase current. This allows the use of low-cost and slow-switching devices for the machine side converter. The ZVT circuitry allows high frequency operation of th echopping switch, which enhnaces the system dynamcis and phase-current ripples. High efficiency of th eintegrated converter is obtained due to low switching losses.

  • To date, a smart base isolation system has been developed in high seismicity region such as Japan, USA etc. Smart base isolation systems developed for structures in high seismicity region cannot directly applied to structures in regions of low-to-moderate seismicity such as Korea. Therefore, problems that occur by applying the smart base isolation system developed for the structures in high seismicity region to the structures in regions of low-to-moderate seismicity have been investigated in this study. To this end, a spacial arch structure was used as an example structure and MR dampers and low damping elastomeric bearings were used to compose a smart base isolation system. Artificial earthquakes were used for ground motions in regions of high and low-to-moderate seismicity. Based on numerical simulation results, it has been known that the capacity of smart base isolation system for the regions of low-to-moderate seismicity should be carefully designed because the base isolation effects of the smart base isolation system for high seismicity region is deteriorated when it is applied to the structures in regions of low-to-moderate seismicity.

  • Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) between a number of companies goes on increasing on the internet. Although a conventional EDI system reduces business process efforts, time, resources, etc., important information is easily and frequently exposed by well trained hackers and crackers, which inflict a severe loss on the company and even put the company under a crisis. This study integrates the conventional EDI system and Virtual Private Net (VPN) to maximize an overall efficiency of speed and security in data transaction by the level of importance. The EDI system properly interfaced to IPSec and L2TP of VPN allows us to select two modes: the one focuses on a high speed with a low or a medium level security or the other does on a high level security with a low or a medium level speed. Both the company and the end users get a lot of tangible and intangible advantages by integrating the EDI system and VPN.

  • Purpose: Achilles tendon rupture has become more common in the recent years. As suture with foreign material has been blamed for impaired healing, better results should be expected from the use of autogenous material such as plantaris tendon. We have evaluated the surgical results of end-to-end anastomosis using the plantaris tendon as suture material. Materials and Methods: Between Jan 1997 and Jan 2002, the 60 patients were included this study during one year follow-up. We performed the operations with end-to-end suture technique using modified Lynn's method. The plantaris tendon has been used as a autogenous suture material and can be utilized in the end-to-end anastomosis of ruptured Achilles tendon with modifed Bunnel suture technique. We used a clinical scoring system reported by Leppilahti to evaluate the results. Results: The overall results were excellent in thirty eight(63.3%), good in sixteen(26.6%), fair in five(8.3%) cases, and poor in only one (1.6%) case. Fifty four cases(90%) had the score more than good. We had no deep infection, rerupture, deep vein thrombosis, and skin necrosis as major complication. In just 2 cases, although there were superficial skin infection, the wounds did not proceed necrosis due to using antibiotics. Conclusion: End-to-end anastomosis using the plantaris tendon as suture material was good treatment option that had low infection rate and no foreign body reaction because of using autogenous material, and therefore we can get rapid healing of ruptured tendon due to early ragne of motion and accerlerated rehabilitation.

  • More than 10 different cases of airline overrun accidents happened annually home and abroad in recent years. So the government put the guidelines to protect that kinds of accidents, which is named 'Runway End Safety Area'. However, the great part of airports are far from the standards, because most of the airports have been built before the guidelines. Moreover, in many cases natural obstacles, ambiance, and local area developments obstruct the extension of the runway to meet the criteria. For these reasons, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recommends that the aviation fields construct 'Aircraft Rapid Arresting System(ARAS)' at the end of the runway. Many airdromes have been constructing the system and some airports have already completed the construction. In this research, our team performed a basic study about low strength perlite concrete to provide the proper material with 'ARAS'. As a result, the unit weight of the low strength perlite concrete was $4.5{\sim}6.4kN/m^3$ and uniaxial compressive strength was measured in the range of $400{\sim}1,470kN/m^2$. In addition, we tested penetration compressive strength by using CBR tester, and we observed that the strength was increased after around 60% of penetration rate. Also, 40% of penetration rate was measured through the penetration test with dump trucks.

  • The low-cost REID system is expected to be widely used in the ubiquitous computing environment as an intelligent device. Although REID systems have several advantages, they may create new threats to users' privacy. In this paper, a traceable and unlinkable REID system called 'Fair EPC system' is proposed for low-cost RFID tags. The proposed system enables the protection of users' privacy from unwanted scanning, and it is traceable to the tag by authorized administrators when necessary. The proposed system has some advantages; (1) eliminating any danger of exposing users' information via tag tracking through the cooperation between readers or back-end databases, (2) enabling the tracking of real serial number of the tag only through the cooperation of authorized administrators using a cryptographic secret sharing scheme, and (3) providing the efficiency of the proposed system reduce the computational workloads of back-end databases.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to experimentally investigate the structural safety of and identify critical locations in a front-end loader under impact loads. Methods: Impact and static tests were conducted on a commonly used front-end loader mounted on a tractor. In the impact test, the bucket of the front-end loader with maximum live load was raised to its maximum lift height and was allowed to free fall to a height of 500 mm above the ground where it was stopped abruptly. For the static test, the bucket with maximum live load was raised and held at the maximum lift height, median height, and a height of 500 mm from the ground. Strain gages were attached at twenty-three main locations on the front-end loader, and the maximum stresses and strains were measured during respective impact and static tests. Results: Stresses and strains at the same location on the loader were higher in the impact test than in the static test, for most of measurement locations. This indicated that the front-end loader was put under a severe environment during impact loading. The safety factors for stresses were higher than 1.0 at all locations during impact and static tests. Conclusions: Since the lowest safety factor was higher than 1.0, the front-end loader was considered as structurally safe under impact loads. However, caution must be exercised at the locations having relatively low safety factors because failure may occur at these locations under high impact loads. These important design locations were identified to be the bucket link elements and the connection elements between the tractor frame and front-end loader. A robust design is required for these elements because of their high failure probability caused by excessive impact stress.
