Appreciation of the large volume deficits which may occur in surgical or trauma patients due to blood loss has led to vigorous transfusion techniques designed to overt hypovolemic shock and ischemic damage to vital organs which may develop in minutes during the hypovolemic state. In a significant proportion of patients treated with massive rapid blood or fluid transfusion, hypervolemia occurs and life threatening pulmonary edema may develop. Especially, hypervolemia may occur during transfusion for preventing development of the so-called low output syndrome following cardiac surgery. However, the most effective indicator which reveals the adequate level of transfusion is not settled yet. The present study was aimed to compare the effectiveness of the indicators suggested thus far and to determine the most sensitive one. Eight dogs were experimentally studied in terms of left atrial pressure, pulmonary arterial systolic pressure, central venous pressure, mean systemic arterial pressure and heart rate before and after induced hypervolemia with infusion of 600ml heparinized homologous blood. Immediately after induced overtransfusion of the blood, pulmonary arterial systolic pressure increased 75.0%, in omparison with the control before transfusion, left atrial pressure 58.8%, central venous pressure 44.6%, and mean systemic arterial pressure 10.1%, one hour after transfusion, pulmonary arterial systolic pressure 40.0%, left atrial pressure 21.2%, central venous pressure 14.5%, and mean systemic arterial pressure 3.2%, central venous pressure 14.5%, and mean systemic arterial pressure 3.2%, respectively. Heart rate showed no significant change throughout the experiment. These result suggested that the changes of the pulmonary arterial systolic pressure is the most sensitive indicator for detection of hypervolemia during blood transfusion.

Although several studies have assessed the influence of the glycemic index on body weight and blood pressure among adults, limited evidence exists for the pediatric age population. In the current study, we compared the effects of low glycemic index (LGI) diet to the healthy nutritional recommendation (HNR)-based diet on obesity and blood pressure among adolescent girls in pubertal ages. This 10-week parallel randomized clinical trial comprised of 50 overweight or obese and sexually mature girls less than 18 years of age years, who were randomly assigned to LGI or HNR-based diet. Macronutrient distribution was equivalently prescribed in both groups. Blood pressure, weight and waist circumference were measured at baseline and after intervention. Of the 50 participants, 41 subjects (include 82%) completed the study. The GI of the diet in the LGI group was $42.67{\pm}0.067$. A within-group analysis illustrated that in comparison to the baseline values, the body weight and body mass index (not waist circumference and blood pressure) decreased significantly after the intervention in both groups (P = 0.0001). The percent changes of the body weight status, waist circumference and blood pressure were compared between the two groups and the findings did not show any difference between the LGI diet consumers and those in the HNR group. In comparison to the HNR, LGI diet could not change the weight and blood pressure following a 10-week intervention. Further longitudinal studies with a long-term follow up should be conducted in this regard.
PURPOSE: The purpose of present study was to investigate effects of obesity, blood pressure and life style on lipid indices and blood pressure in men of age 40s. METHODS: One hundred forty five subjects in men of age 40s were participated in this study. All participants were taken physical examination, lifestyle survey and laboratory test. According to examination, participants were divided into two group in four categories ; obesity and normal group, hypertension and normal group, smokers and non-smokers, and drinkers and non-drinkers. The low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were analyzed by independent t-test for comparison between two groups. RESULTS: The values of LDL, TC, SBP, DBP were higher and HDL was lower in obesity than in normal group (p<.05). The values of LDL, TC, SBP, DBP were higher in hypertension group than in normal group (p<.05). The values of TG was higher and HDL was lower in smokers than in non-smokers (p<.05). There's no significant differences between drinkers and non-drinkers (p>.05). CONCLUSION: It can be seen that obesity and blood pressure were more relative risk factors than smoking and alcohol indices in cardiovascular diseases.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the cross-sectional relationship between low blood lead levels and increasing blood pressure among Korean adults using a nationally representative sample of the Korean population: the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2008. Methods: A total of 918 subjects aged 40 and older and not currently being treated for hypertension participated in this study. Information about age, gender, smoking status, alcohol consumption, education level, and the use of anti-hypertensive medication was collected. The blood pressure was defined as the mean of the second and the third measurements after three time measurements. Lead levels were determined by an analysis of blood samples. Multiple linear and logistic regression analyses were implemented after adjusting for covariates including age, gender, educational level, smoking status, alcohol consumption, and BMI. Results: This study showed that the average differences in systolic and diastolic blood pressure comparing the lowest to highest quintile of blood lead were 4.33 mmHg (95% CI, 0.66-8.00; p for trend = 0.027) and 2.66 mmHg (95% CI, 0.26-5.06; p for trend = 0.021), respectively. After multivariate adjustment for covariates, the prevalence odds ratio (POR) of subjects in the highest quintile was associated with a 1.70-fold increase in the risks of hypertension (95% CI, 0.83-3.49; p for trend test = 0.112) over those in the lowest quintile of blood lead concentration, However, it was not statistically significant. Conclusions: This study provided evidence for an association between low- levels of blood lead and elevations in blood pressure and risk for hypertension in the general population of Korea.
Objectives The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics in obesity classification group of college students having health checkup by analyzing their BMI and blood test and determine the association between factors contributing to obesity and obesity according to BMI. Methods A group of 2992 test subjects took their medical examination and their body composition, height, weight, blood pressure were measured and blood test was done. With these results we diagnosed obesity, and analysed relationship between obesity and cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL (low density lipoprotein)-cholesterol, HDL (high density lipoprotein)-cholesterol, liver function, renal function and blood pressure. Results 1. Overweight individuals showed high total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, GOT (glutamic oxalacetic transaminase), GPT (glutamic pyruvate transaminase), Urea-nitrogen, Creatinine and low HDL-cholesterol. 2. BMI showed a significant association with other factors. BMI has a negative correlation with sex and HDL-cholesterol. BMI had positive correlations with other factors. 3. There was no relation between BMI and sex. Those six factors, liver function, cholesterol, blood pressure, kidney function, neutral fat, and blood sugar were related to BMI. Conclusions There was a significant relation between college students' BMI and their liver function, cholesterol, blood pressure, kidney function, neutral fat, and blood sugar. The diseases related to liver function, cholesterol, blood pressure, kidney function, neutral fat, and blood sugar were clearly associated with obesity.

Background and objective: This study was conducted with 10 men and women in their 50s-60s to investigate the effect of agro-healing activities on the improvement of mental health. Methods: The experimental group participated in total 8 sessions of agro-healing activities, once a week for 2 hours each, at a care farm in Wanju-gun. Physiological measurements were taken with an electroencephalogram (EEG), Salivettes samples, and blood pressure before and after the activities. Results: As a result of analyzing the changes in brainwaves of the experimental group before and after agro-healing activities, relative slow alpha (RSA), relative fast alpha (RFA), and ratio of alpha to high beta (RAHB), the indices of stability and relaxation, increased after the program with statistical significance. Also, the ratio of SMR to theta (RST) of the attention index increased on the right frontal lobes, temporal lobes, and left occipital lobes, and relative low beta (RLB) increasd on the frontal lobes, temporal lobes, and occipital lobes after the program with statistical significance. The sympathetic nervous system activity, which is a stress index, decreased after the program, whereas the parasympathetic nervous system activity, which is a relaxation index, increased, showing statistical significance (p < .05). As a result of analyzing the changes in blood pressure after the program, systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure decreased from prehypertension to normal blood pressure, showing statistical significance. SThese results indicate that participating in agro-healing activities at a care farm for the 50-60s helps reduce stress and improve stability and relaxation as well as attention. Conclusion: Thus, developing and applying customized agro-healing programs for participants will have a positive effect on brain activity and psychophysiological improvement by relieving tension and stress. However, there are limitations in generalizing the results of this study since most of agro-healing farms have low accessibility that leads to a low level of participants.

We developed an automatic blood pressure control system to maintain the blood pressure of patients at a substantially low level during a surgical operation. The developed system discharges two functions, continuous feedback control of the mean arterial pressure (MAP) by a state-predictive servo controller and risk control based on the inference by fuzzy-like logics and rules using measured data. Twenty-eight clinical applications were made beginning in November 1995, and the effects of the automatic blood pressure control on the operation time and on bleeding were assessed affirmatively by means of Wilcoxon testing. This paper essentially reports the engineering details of the control system.
Since cryogens are stored at very low temperatures, the cryogenic storage systems are quite sensitive to heat leaks. Even though the vessel operated under sealed condition with vacuum insulation and reflective coatings are used, the heat leakage into the vessel is still unavoidable. Therefore, this paper concerns with numerical study of self-pressurization used to analysis the optimum design with the variation volume fraction, effect of heat flux and storage pressure of liquid nitrogen. The result shows that as the volume fraction increases, the pressure rise reduces and the relatively at atmosphere pressure is better than the higher one. In addition, higher heat flux leads the pressure rise increases faster than low one. The additional of heat pipe system to reduce the pressure rise rate also has been done. By this comparison, the optimum design for storage umbilical cord blood can be selected.
Purpose: This study was to investigate the relationship between blood pressure, lipids and body mass index by smoking status among adolescents. Methods: This study was designed as a descriptive correlational study. General and smoking characteristics were collected using a questionnaire. The smoking group consisted of 42 (33%) students and the non smoking group 85 (67%) students. Blood pressure, lipids, height and weight were measured, and body mass index was calculated to $kg/m^2$. The collected data was analyzed by the n(%), ${\chi}^2-test$, t-test and Pearson correlation coefficient (SPSS 12.0). Results: 1. The smoking level was different between grade, smoking status among the family, the contentment of their relationship with their parents, school life and teachers. 2. The smoking group's systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, triglyceride, low density lipoprotein cholesterol and body mass index were higher than those of the non smoking group. 3. The smoking amount had a significant positive correlation between total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol. Conclusion: The result of this study offered basic data to develop intervention programs to prevent hypertension and hyperlipidemia in smoking adolescents.
The purpose of this study was to confirm that regular physical exercise habit and calcium intake play a role in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, particularly to confirm that regular exercise is important in reducing serum lipid levels in postmenopausal women. Subjects were classified into regular exercise group(more than 3 times/wk, more than 30 min per exercise) and non-regular exercise group. A convenient frequency method was used to assess the nutritional intake of subjects. Anthropometric measurement such as body weight and height, and blood pressure were measured. There was no significant difference between non-regular exercise group and regular exercise group in energy intake and calcium intake. The total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol concentrations in non-regular exercise group were significantly higher than those in regular exercise group. There were no significant correlations between age or weight with blood lipids and blood pressure in regular exercise group, while there were significant positive correlations between age or weight with blood lipids and blood pressure in non-regular exercise group. The levels of serum cholesterol, triglyceride, blood pressure and atherogenic index increased with age in non-regular exercise women. The blood pressure in low total Ca intake/plant Ca intake ratio group was significantly higher than that in high total Ca intake/plant Ca intake ratio group. There was a highly significant positive correlation between Ca intake and HDL-cholesterol in non-regular exercise women. And, there was a highly significant negative correlation between Ca intake and blood pressure in regular exercise women. The results suggest that increased habitual physical activity and calcium intake should be recommended by way of decreasing blood lipids and blood pressure in postmenopausal women.
