  • In order to find out the environmental factors influencing the catch of fyke nets in the coastal waters Yosu, the oceanographic factors, i.e., the waters temperature and the salinity were observed respectively from April to November in 1999, and each of them was compared with the catch of common mullet, Mugil cephalus by fyke net. The results obtained are summerized as follows : 1. The water temperature was ranged from 13.0 to $25^\circ$C and water temperature increased from April to August and decreased on September to November. 2. The range salinity in the fishing grounds was from 28.6 to 33.8$\textperthousand$, and salinity was high from April to June. From July, however, the salinity decreased to continue a low value still september. 3. The catches of common mullet caught by funnel net were the highest in may and the smallest in November. The ranges of optimum water temperature for the funnel nets fishing was 15.0 to $16.0^\circ$C, the ranges of optimum salinity for fishing varied between from 32.6 to 33.8$\textperthousand$.

  • Conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) data obtained along a meridional section in the eastern tropical Pacific in July 2003 have been analyzed to identify various water masses, and to examine the hydrographic structure and zonal geostrophic currents in the upper 1000 m. Water mass analysis shows the existence of subtropical and intermediate waters, characterized by layers of subsurface salinity maximum and minimum, originating from both hemispheres of the Pacific. Vertical section of temperature in the upper 200 m shows the typical trough-ridge structure associated with the zonal current system for most of the tropical Pacific. Water with the lowest salinity of less than 33.6 was found in the upper 30 m between $8.5^{\circ}N$ and $10.5^{\circ}N$ in a boundary zone between the North Equatorial Current and North Equatorial Countercurrent. Temporal changes in water properties observed at $10.5^{\circ}N$ over a period of 9 days suggest both the local rainfall and horizontal advection is responsible for the presence of the low-salinity water. Development of a barrier layer was also observed at $10.5^{\circ}N$. In the North Equatorial Current region a local upwelling was observed at $15^{\circ}N$, which brings high salinity and cooler subtropical water to the sea surface. A band of countercurrent occurs in the upwelling region between $13^{\circ}N$ and $15^{\circ}N$.

  • Hydrographic data taken at stations spaced 8-16 nautical miles in the Cheju Strait and the southeastern part of the Yellow Sea in June 1980 and August 1981 show for the first time that oceanic water of high temperature and high salinity exists within 20 km from the northern and western coast of Cheju-Do. It is confirmed that the low salinity trough in the sea around Cheju-Do originates from the river plume on the Yantze Bank. The salinity trough separates the high temperature and high salinity water around Cheju-Do from the surface water of the Yellow Sea and below the seasonal thermocline this distance water meets the Yellow Sea Cold Water forming a thermal front. The Yellow Sea Cold Water seems to spread southward along the Yantze Bank centered at the isobath of 70 m. Its characteristics also appear in the northern part of the Cheju Strait. these complex structures contradict the yellow Sea Warm current suggested by Uda 1934), which is supposed to flow northward into the Yellow Sea along the western coast of Korea. Our data show that dense hydrographic surveys in space and time are prerequisite to understand the circulation around Cheju-Do.

  • BACKGROUND: Measurement of electrical conductivity of saturated soil paste ($EC_e$) for assessment of soil salinity is time-consuming, and thus conversion of EC of 1:5 soil-water extract ($EC_{1:5}$) to $EC_e$ using a dilution factor may be of help to monitor salinity of huge number of soil samples. This study was conducted to evaluate the dilution factor for reclaimed tideland (RTL) soils of South Korea. METHODS AND RESULTS: Soil samples (n=40) were collected from four RTLs, and analyzed for $EC_{1:5}$, $EC_e$, and cation compositions of 1:5 soil-water extract. The dilution factor (8.70) was estimated by regression analysis between $EC_{1:5}$ and $EC_e$, and the obtained dilution factor was validated by applying to an independent data set (n=96) of $EC_{1:5}$ and $EC_e$. The $EC_e$ measured and predicted was strongly correlated ($r^2=0.74$, P<0.001), but $EC_e$ was overestimated by 16% particularly for the soils with high clay content and low sodium adsorption ratio (SAR). CONCLUSION: This study suggests that using the dilution factor to convert $EC_{1:5}$ to $EC_e$ is feasible method to monitor changes in the soil salinity of the study RTL. However, overestimation of $EC_e$ should be cautioned for the soils with high clay content and low SAR.

  • Mortality of clam, Meretrix lusoria was measured during the experimental cultures in different sediments compositions and in different salinities of sea water. Experimental groups maintained in silt and clay showed significant mortality, while those treated in sand and in sand-silt showed little mortality. In the groups cultured in silt and clay, young groups of approximately 2.5cm in shell length were subjected to early and high mortality (approximately eighty-five per cent in foully-one days). The larger the shell size was, the later and the lower the mortality occurred. In different salinity, the groups maintained in silt and clay showed different mortalities. It is observed that the survival rate of the shell in the sea water of low salinity was higher than that in the high salinity water. Oxygen consumption of isolated gill tissue showed a little difference between the groups maintained in silt and clay and those in sand (the control-group). Consequently, it may be stated that the mortality results mainly from the deposition of silt and clay, although the survival rate of Meretrix lusoria depends also on water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, body size ana other factors.

  • In order to investigate spatial and temporal distributional characteristics of major water qualities in the Saemangeum area during the Saemangeum dike construction, salinity, COD, dissolved nutrients(DIN, Silicate) and heavy metals were analyzed from the surface water collected in April, May, August and November 2002. The overall value of Salinity, COD, DIN, and silicate in surface waters were in the range of $13.08{\sim}31.96\;psu$, $0.12{\sim}3.43\;mg/L$, $0.001{\sim}2.638\;mg/L$, and $0.010{\sim}3.181\;mg/L$, respectively. The COD and DIN in each survey showed the highest concentration at the mouth of Mangyeong river estuary(St. 1) where freshwater flow into the Saemangeum area. The concentrations of nutrients were high in the inner part of the Saemangeum dike with low-salinity, and low nutrients in the outer part of the dike with high-salinity, which strongly indicated that concentrations were adjusted by physical mixing. The ranges of dissolved metals and acid-soluble Hg in surface seawater were $0.006{\sim}0.115{\mu}g/L$ for Co, $0.26{\sim}0.114{\mu}g/L$ for Ni, $0.14{\sim}0.93{\mu}g/L$ for Cu, $0.04{\sim}0.53{\mu}g/L$ for Zn, $0.010{\sim}0.043{\mu}g/L$ for Cd, $0.010{\sim}0.795{\mu}g/L$ for Pb, and $0.25{\sim}4.16{\mu}g/L$ for Hg. The highest concentrations of some metals except for Cd were found at the estuary(Sts. 1 or 3). In most cases, a decreasing order of metal concentrations towards open sea(low-salinity$\rightarrow$high-salinity) was observed and showed positive relationship with DIN and silicate caused by land base pollutants input. On the other hand, due to Cd desorption from suspended solids in saline water, dissolved Cd concentrations were high in high-salinity area and low in low-salinity. In November, Co, Zn, Cu and Pb were relatively high in the northern area of the outer-side of Saemangeum, which was only influenced by the Geum river discharge. The concentrations of most dissolved metals of this study were lower than those of the past data in this area, but higher than those in Lena river estuary under the pristine environment.

  • An instrumented ferry made two transects per day across two current systems which are the North Korean Cold Current and the East Korean Warm Current over the years 2012-2013 from Gangneung to Ulleungdo in the southwestern East Sea. Seawater properties of these transects were measured with high spatial and temporal resolution for an extended period of time. Here the salinity records from the transects with the oceanographic observation data from East Sea Fisheries Institute of NFRDI, AVISO daily current chart and GOCI Chlorophyll-a image in 2012 and 2013 are used to study the time-series variation of salinity at the surface. The high salinity section with the range of 33.15~34.12 occurred on the transect mainly in the middle of eddy, and western boundary of strong northward current from June to October. We can found low salinity waters in both sides of the high salinity section. It is estimated that the western low salinity waters with the range of 30.58~33.20 accompanied by southward current were derived from the NKCC and the eastern waters with the range of 31.30~33.24 accompanied by northward current were derived from the Tsushima Surface Water. The lowest salinity of NKCC is confirmed in this study as 30.36. It is found that the western waters below 33.00 extended extremely toward the east about 110 km area from Gangneung and toward the south around Jukbyon coastal area as a 5~10 m layer. We can find its volume of low saline waters transport is not neglectable compared with that of Tsushima Current region in the western part of the East Sea. In this study we named it as the North Korean Low Saline Surface Water in summer.

  • Salinity affects sound speed in the low salinity environment, in the seas where freshwater from large rivers and flows into the marginal sea area near the Yangtze River and the Niger River. In this paper, SSC (Surface Sound Channel) formed by low salinity water was investigated in the East China Sea and the Gulf of Guinea of rainy season. The data from KODC (Korea Oceanographic Data Center) in the East China Sea and from ARGO (Array for Real-time Geostrophic Oceanography) in the Gulf of Guinea of the tropical area were used for analysis. SSC haline channel was formed 14 times among 32 SSC occurrences when the 90 data from 9 points were analyzed during a decade (2000 ~ 2009) in the East China Sea. In the Gulf of Guinea, haline channel was formed 18 times among 20 SSC occurrences during 3 years (2006 ~ 2009). When the sound speed gradient was analyzed from temperature-salinity gradient diagram, the gradients of both salinity and temperature affect SSC formation in the East China Sea. In contrast, the salinity gradient mostly affects SSC formation due to the least change of temperature in the well-developed mixed layer in the Gulf of Guinea. Their acoustic characteristics show that channel depth is 6.5 m, critical angle is $1.5^{\circ}$ and difference of transmission loss between surface and thermocline is 11.5 dB in the East China Sea, while channel depth is 18 ~ 24 m, critical angle is $4.0{\sim}5.4^{\circ}$ and difference of transmission loss is 21.5 ~ 27.9 dB in the Gulf of Guinea. These results are expected to be used as a basic understanding of the acoustic transmission changes due to low salinity water at the estuaries and the ocean with heavy precipitation.

  • Spatial and temporal variations of hydrography and currents are investigated in the Southeastern Sea of Korea during October 1982. The distribution of the water mass of high salinity (>34.40${\textperthousand}$) and low dissolved oxygen concentration (<5.0ml/l) indicates that the Tsushima current flows northward as it passes the Western Channel of the Korea Strait. The cold water (<$6.0^{\circ}c$) with low salinity (<$34.20{\textperthousand}$) and high dissolved oxygen concentration (>6.0ml/l) reaches the bottom of the western channel of the Korea Strait after flowing southward leaning against the slope rather than following the deepest part of the Channel. Repeated sections in the Korea Strait show a remarkable change of hydrographic structure over a period of 4 days ; both warn and cold waters are intensified, particularly in the eastern part of the strait toward the Tsushima Island.
