  • RPL (IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low-power Lossy Network) is a standardized routing protocol for LLNs (Low power and Lossy Networks) by the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force). RPL creates routes and builds a DODAG (Destination Oriented Directed Acyclic Graph) through OF (Objective Function) defining routing metrics and optimization objectives. RPL supports a leaf mode which does not allow any child nodes. In this paper, we propose INFRA-RPL which provides a dynamic leaf mode functionality to a leaf node with the mobility. The proposed protocol is implemented in the open-source IoT operating system, Contiki-NG and Cooja simulator, and its performance is evaluated. The evaluation results show that INFRA-RPL outperforms the existing protocols in the terms of PDR, latency, and control message overhead.

  • This paper introduces a novel sensor network protocol, R-WSLP(Realtime Wireless Sensor Line Protocol), which has extremely low latency characteristic in large-scale WSN. R-WSLP is proposed to implement realtime forest fire monitoring system. We propose Distributed TDMA method for the multiple channel access and Time Synchronized Forwarding Mechanism instead of routing technique to achieve low latency network. Also, R-WSLP provides extremely low power operation which we accomplished by reducing idle listening. In our experimentation, we get successful results at the forest fire monitoring system with our protocol.

  • A buoy is a float attached by chain to the seabed to mark channels in a harbor or underwater hazards and can be classified into two major types as autonomous buoys and fixed buoys. When there is high demand such as marking channels in a harbor, monitoring ecology of ocean and environmental monitoring of coastal areas, smart buoys are developed. The smart buoys have wireless network systems such as GPS, CDMA and ZigBee. Using the GPS techniques, location and environments of buoy can be monitored and traced. However, the GPS in fixed buoy systems has a high power consumption and cost. Using many buoys on low power ZigBee basis allows dramatic reduction of the overall power consumption. In this study, it is aimed at the design of the trackable protocol for a buoy system which has low data rate and low power consumption. The proposed protocol has advantages that it can detect abnormal movement and gather trackable information without any system changes. In the introduced protocol, additional 2 bits and join request messages are used for trackable buoy system. The behaviors of improved protocol is modeled into petri-net and proved a reachability.

  • IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) CoAP (Constrained Application Protocol) protocol is supported communication between sensor or actuator nodes by in a constrained environment, such as small amount of memory, and low power. CoAP and HTTP protocol can convert easily, and can use to monitor or controll the infrastructure utility through low-power sensor and actuator networks in IoT (Internet of Thing) and M2M (Machine-to-Machine) environment. IETF CoRE(Constrained RESTful environments) Working Group proposed CoAP protocol in 2010, and began to standardize it. Recently, CoAP protocol is published RFC (Request for Comments) 7252. In this paper, we design and implement of CoAP protocol for testing the interoperability in heterogeneous operating environments. For this experiment, we developed the CoAP client program based on Windows environment and CoAP server program in Linux environment to test the interoperability.

  • A wireless sensor network (WSN) has limited battery power because it is used wirelessly using low-cost small sensors. Since the battery cannot be replaced, the lifespan of the sensor node is directly related to the lifespan of the battery, so power must be used efficiently to maximize the lifespan of the network. In this study, based on PEGASIS, a representative energy-efficient routing protocol, we propose a protocol that classifies layers according to the distance from the sink node and configures multiple chains rather than one chain. The proposed protocol can increase network lifespan by reducing the transmission distance between nodes to prevent unnecessary energy consumption.

  • The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) has standardized RPL (IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low-power Lossy Network) as a routing protocol for Low Power and Lossy Networks (LLNs), a low power loss network environment. RPL creates a route through an Objective Function (OF) suitable for the service required by LLNs and builds a Destination Oriented Directed Acyclic Graph (DODAG). Existing studies check the residual energy of each node and select a parent with the highest residual energy to build a DODAG, but the energy exhaustion of the parent can not avoid the network disconnection of the children nodes. Therefore, this paper proposes EC-RPL (Enhanced Connectivity-RPL), in which ta node leaves DODAG in advance when the remaining energy of the node falls below the specified energy threshold. The proposed protocol is implemented in Contiki, an open-source IoT operating system, and its performance is evaluated in Cooja simulator, and the number of control messages is compared using Foren6. Experimental results show that EC-RPL has 6.9% lower latency and 5.8% fewer control messages than the existing RPL, and the packet delivery rate is 1.7% higher.

  • In this paper, we propose a zone based ad hoc network construction scheme which support ad hoc path between nodes in local IoT networks consisting of IoT devices with the constrained feature, such as low power, the limited transmission rate and low computing capacity. Recently, the various routing protocols have been studied to support ad hoc networking of local IoT environments. This is, because basis RPL protocol is deigned to be used for the connecting service with Internet through gateway, ad hoc path between nodes in local IoT networks is not supported in basis RPL protocol. Thus, in this paper, the proposed routing scheme provides both ad hoc path and Infra path through gateway, supporting basis RPL protocol simultaneously. Through simulation, we show that the proposed routing scheme with zone based path selection scheme improves the performance of the success rate of end-to-end data transmission and the end-to-end delay, compared to basis RPL protocol.

  • The sensor network technology for core technology of ubiquitous computing is in the spotlight recently, the research on sensor network is proceeding actively which is composed many different sensor node. One of the important condition for design of sensor node is to extend for network life which is to minimize power-consumption under the limited resources of sensor network. This study suggest routing protocol that was used second level cluster structure to reduce power-consumption of sensor node. the first level use the previous routing protocol under the LEACH, second level decide to transmit or not by comparision of data value for Effective Usage, reduce the unnecessary power-consumption.

  • Recent advances in wireless networks and low-cost, low-power design have led to active research in large-scale networks of small, wireless, low power sensors and actuators, In large-scale networks, lots of timing-synchronization protocols already exist (such as NTP, GPS), In ad-hoc networks, especially wireless sensor networks, it is hard to synchronize all nodes in networks because it has no infrastructure. In addition, sensor nodes have low-power CPU (it cannot perform the complex computation), low batteries, and even they have to have active and inactive section by periods. Therefore, new approach to time synchronization is needed for wireless sensor networks, In this paper, I propose Energy-Efficient Time Synchronization (EETS) protocol providing network-wide time synchronization in wireless sensor networks, The algorithm is organized two phase, In first phase, I make a hierarchical tree with sensor nodes by broadcasting "Level Discovery" packet. In second phase, I synchronize them by exchanging time stamp packets, And I also consider send time, access time and propagation time. I have shown the performance of EETS comparing Timing-sync Protocol for Sensor Networks (TPSN) and Reference Broadcast Synchronization (RBS) about energy efficiency and time synchronization accuracy using NESLsim.
