  • A new CMOS voltage-bias differential LC voltage-controlled oscillator (LC-VCO) with active source degeneration is proposed. The proposed degeneration technique preserves the quality factor of the LC-tank which leads to improvement in phase noise of VCO oscillators. The proposed VCO shows the high figure of merit (FOM) with large tuning range, low power, and small chip size compared to those of conventional voltage-bias differential LC-VCO. The proposed VCO implemented in 0.18-${\mu}m$ CMOS shows the phase noise of -118 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset oscillating at 5.03 GHz, tuning range of 12%, occupies 0.15 $mm^2$ of chip area while dissipating 1.44 mW from 0.8 V supply.

  • An InGaP/GaAs HBT based differential Colpitts voltage control oscillator(VCO) is presented in this paper. In the VCO core, two switching transistors are introduced to steer the core bias current to save power. An LC tank with an inductor quality factor(Q) of 11.4 is used to generate oscillation frequency. It has a superior phase noise characteristics of -130.12 dBc/Hz and -105.3 at 1 MHz and 100 kHz frequency offsets respectively from the carrier frequency(1.566 GHz) when supplied with a control voltage of 0 volt. It dissipates output power of -5.3 dBm. Two pairs of on-chip base collector (BC) diodes are used in the tank circuit to increase the VCO tuning range(168 MHz). This VCO occupies the area of $1.070{\times}0.90mm^2$ including buffer and pads.

  • This paper proposes a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) that has broadband turning and low-level of phase noise characteristics. Due to the micro-strip line resonant circuit with a low Q value, which is applied to the broadband tuning range, the depreciated phase noise performance is compensated by restraining the harmonics of the oscillating frequency. The VCO was designed according to the proposed structure as well as the conventional structure, and the superiority of the proposed structure was verified through its simulation, fabrication, and measurement.

  • In this paper, a novel low phase noise voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) using metamaterial structure and rat race coupler is presented for reducing the phase noise without the reduction of the frequency tuning range. The metamaterial structure has been realized by microstrip square open loop double split ring resonator (SRR). The rat race coupler shows slightly higher transmission compared to a Wilkinson combiner and is, therefore, used instead to improve the performances of VCO. By providing these unique modifications, the proposed push-push VCO has a phase noise of -126.30~-124.83 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz in the tuning range of 5.672~5.800 GHz.

  • This paper proposes a new series-coupled voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). The proposed VCO consists of four current-reuse Armstrong VCOs (CRA-VCOs) coupled by four transformers. The series-coupling, current-reuse, and Armstrong topologies improve the phase noise performance by increasing the negative-Gm of the VCO core with half the current consumption of a conventional differential VCO. The proposed VCO consumes 6.54 mW at 9.78 GHz from a 1-V supply voltage. The measured phase noise is -115.1 dBc/Hz at an offset frequency of 1 MHz, and the FoM is -186.5 dBc/Hz. The frequency tuning range is from 9.38-10.52 GHz. The core area is $0.49mm^2$ in a $0.13-{\mu}m$ CMOS process.

  • The MMIC cascode VCO is designed, fabricated, and measured for Ku-band Low Noise Blcok(LNB) system using InGaP/GaAs HBT technology. The phase noise of -116.4 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset with output power of 1.3 dBm is obtained at 11.526 GHz by applying 3 V and 11 mA, which is comparatively better characteristics than compared with the different configuration VCOs fabricated with other technologies. The simulated results of oscillation frequency and second harmonic suppression agree with the measured results. The phase noise is improved due to the use of the smallest value of inductor in frequency determining network and the InGaP ledge function of the technology. The chip size of $830\time781\;{\mu}m^2$ is also achieved.

  • In this paper, low phase noise VCO using novel compact microstrip spiral resonator is proposed. A spiral resonator has super compact dimension, low insertion losses in the passband and high level of rejection in the stopband with sharp cutoff and a large coupling coefficient value, which makes a high Q value, and has reduced the phase noise. To increase the tuning range of VCO, varactor diode has been connected at the tunable negative resistance in VCO. This VCO has presented the oscillation frequency of $5.686{\sim}5.841GHz$, harmonics -29.83 dBc and phase noise of $-115.16{\sim}-115.17dBc/Hz$ at the offset frequency of 100 KHz.

  • This paper presents a fully integrated 5 GHz band low phase noise LC tank VCO. The implemented VCO is tuned by integrated PN diodes and tuning rage is 5.01∼5.30 GHz with 0∼3 V control voltage. For improved phase noise performance, a LC filtering technique is adapted. The measured phase noise is -87.8 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz offset frequency and -111.4 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset frequency which is excellent performance. Moreover phase noise is improved by 5 dB after employing the LC filter. It is the first experimental result in field of InGaP/GaAs HBT VCOs. The figure of merit of the fabricated VCO with LC filter is -172.1 dBc/Hz. It is the best result among 5 GHz InGaP HBT VCOs. Moreover this work shows lower DC power consumption, higher output power and more fixed output power compared with previous 4, 5 GHz band InGaP HBT VCOs.

  • In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of the new current-current negative feedback (CCNF) voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO), which suppresses 1/f induced low-frequency noise. By means of the CCNF, the high-frequency noise as well as the low-frequency noise is prevented from being converted into phase noise. The proposed CCNF VCO shows 11-dB reduction in phase noise at 10 kHz offset, compared with the conventional differential VCO. The phase noise of the proposed VCO is -87 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset frequency from 5.5-GHz carrier. The proposed VCO consumes 14.0 mA at 2.0 V supply voltage, and shows single-ended output power of -12.0 dBm.
