  • During severe nuclear power plant (NPP) accidents, a H2/CO mixture can be generated in the reactor pressure vessel by core degradation and in the containment as well by molten corium-concrete interaction. In spite of its importance, a state-of-the-art methodology predicting H2/CO combustion risk relies predominantly on empirical correlations. It is therefore necessary to develop a proper methodology for flammability evaluation of H2/CO mixtures at ex-vessel phases characterized by three factors: CO concentration, high temperature, and diluents. The developed methodology adopted Le Chatelier's law and a calculated non-adiabatic flame temperature model. The methodology allows the consideration of the individual effect of the heat transfer characteristics of hydrogen and carbon monoxide on low flammability limit prediction. The accuracy of the developed model was verified using experimental data relevant to ex-vessel phase conditions. With the developed model, the prediction accuracy was improved substantially such that the maximum relative prediction error was approximately 25% while the existing methodology showed a 76% error. The developed methodology is expected to be applicable for flammability evaluation in chemical as well as NPP industries.

  • Recently, the use of UHPC made of superplasticizers, silica fume, and steel fibers has been increasing worldwide. Although UHPC has a very high strength as well as an excellent durability performance due to its dense microstructures, earlyage cracks may occur due to the high heat of hydration and autogenous shrinkage caused by low W/B and high unit cement content. The early-age shrinkage cracking of UHPC can be controlled by using the shrinkage reducers and expansive admixtures having autogenous shrinkage compensation effect. In this paper, ultrasonic pulse velocity of UHPC containing shrinkage reducers and expansive agents was measured to predict its stiffness change. Also, the effect of shrinkage reducers and expansive agents on the autogenous shinkage of UHPC was investigated through the shrinkage test of UHPC specimens. Furthermore, the material coefficients of autogenous shrinkage prediction model were determined using the autogenous shrinkage values of UHPC with age. Consequently, the test results showed that, by adding shrinkage reducers and expansive agents, the stiffness of UHPC was rapidly developed at early-ages and the autogenous shrinkage was considerably reduced.

  • Recently the press and institute recognized fly ash as it had excellent performance. Its research and applications are on the rise largely as a substitute for cement. On the contrary, it is in a situation that the regulation of high quality fly ash remains at a low level. Accordingly, this study was to establish 8000 class of fineness of fly ash and three levels of substitute like 15%, 3 0%, and 45% in order to analyze the replacement ratio and effect of water-binder ratio for fly ash that affected the properties of ternary system concrete. As a result of experiment by planning water-binder ratio for two levels like 40% and 50%, it increased the fluidity in a fresh state, and it decreased the air content. This study has found out the setting acceleration and reduction of heat of hydration. As for the strength property in a set state, this study has shown the tendency of being equal or higher in age 28 days.

  • As the number of old buildings subject to safety inspection increases, the burden on designated institutions and management entities that are responsible for safety management is increasing. Accordingly, when selecting buildings subject to safety inspection, appropriate safety inspection standards and appropriate technology are essential. The current safety inspection standards for old buildings give low scores when it is difficult to confirm damage such as cracks in structural members due to finishing materials. This causes the evaluation results to be underestimated regardless of the actual safety status of the structure, resulting in an increase in the number of aging buildings subject to safety inspection. Accordingly, this study proposed a thermal imaging technique, a non-destructive and non-contact inspection, to detect cracks inside finishing materials. A concrete specimen was produced to observe cracks inside the finishing material using a thermal imaging camera, and thermal image data was measured by exciting a heat source on the concrete surface and cracked area. As a result of the measurement, it was confirmed that it was possible to observe cracks inside the finishing material with a width of 0.3mm, 0.5mm, and 0.7mm, but it was difficult to determine the cracks due to uneven temperature distribution due to surface peeling and peeling of the wallpaper. Accordingly, as a result of performing data analysis by deriving the amplitude and phase difference of the thermal image data, clear crack measurement was possible for 0.5mm and 0.7mm cracks. Based on this study, we hope to increase the efficiency of field application and analysis through the development of technology using big data-based deep learning in the diagnosis of internal crack damage in finishing materials.

  • East Parts of Bangladesh have been benifited by low cost energy generated by domestic natural gas but West parts where energy generated by imported fuel. Bangladesh Government authority has very much concerned to transmit the low cost electricity to the West from the East for past several years. To solve such concerns, cross-country 230kv double circuits Power transmission line was proposed, however there was a big obstacle for the realization of this line to cross the Jamuna river which has 12 km long width with a deep muddy river bed. A consultant engineering firm named Merz-Mclellan anyway finalized this plan and a world-wide bid was announced on June 31, 1979. Due to the expected difficulty to construct the towers on sea like area, only three construction groups have participated. including a Korean joint venture organization of Samsung-Korean Developement corporation-Kolon Electric Machinery company. After 3 months bid evaluation, contract was awarded to Korean Consosium and KEM Co was in charge of designing steel towers with anchor bolts and base plates beside to electrical engineering field. Then KEM Co have faced and over-comed many unenpected technical difficulties such as forced eccentricity joint on base plate, distorsion issue of 60mm thick plates welding, threading anchor bolts, tad heat treatment of some anchor bolts, disagreement from Consultant Engineer on multiplying factor of leg stresses for 45$^{\circ}$ wind and on reducing O.L.F for wind loads on cables for such 1220km long spans. After spending two years long period for designing and engineering towers, base plates, and anchor bolts, first shipment of tower was finally realized on Nov. 8, 1981 and on the other hand KDD has proceeded concrete caisson work on schedule at Jamuna river site and expected to complete tower erection and stringing of cables within this year of 1982 which was original completion target.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the surface temperature of surface fabrics using UAV TIR images, to mitigate problems in the thermal environment of urban areas. Surface temperature values derived from UAV images were compared with those measured in-situ during the similar period as when the images were taken. The difference in the in-situ measured and UAV image derived surface temperatures is the highest for gray colored concrete roof fabrics, at $17^{\circ}C$, and urethane fabrics show the lowest difference, at $0.3^{\circ}C$. The experiment power of the scatter plot of in-situ measured and UAV image derived surface temperatures was 63.75%, indicating that the correlation between the two is high. The surface fabrics with high temperature are metal roofs($48.9^{\circ}C$), urethane($43.4^{\circ}C$), and gray colored concrete roofs($42.9^{\circ}C$), and those with low temperature are barren land($30.2^{\circ}C$), area with trees and lawns($30.2^{\circ}C$), and white colored concrete roofs($34.9^{\circ}C$). These results show that accurate analysis of the thermal characteristics of surface fabrics is possible using UAV images. In future, it will be necessary to increase the usability of UAV images via comparison with in-situ data and linkage to satellite imagery.

  • Blast Furnace Slag is good for enhancing the qualities of concrete such as reducing hydration heat increasing fluidity, long-term strength and durability, but it has some problems: construction time is increased or the rotation rate of form is decreased due to low development of early strength. In this study, an aqueous alkali solution for alkali activated reaction was obtained by the electrolysis using concentrated water discharged from seawater desalination process. Prepared aqueous alkali solution was applied to produce mortars using blast furnace slag. The results can be summarized as follows : For the mortar, compressive strength was decreased below 2% of NaOH and increased below 6% of NaOH. And compressive strength was increased gradually with increasing NaOCl contents. However, NaCl contents of mortars caused a decrease of 28days strength above early strength.

  • This study investigated the types of analogies that 7th graders generated to explain three states of matter, the difference of analogies by achievement level, and the misconceptions that might be induced from the analogies. The results revealed that many students made the enriched and storytelling analogies with concrete materials or events from their everyday experiences. However, they made analogies without considering causal relationship such as the change of particular arrangement based on latent heat or molecular movement. The students of high achievement level considered the arrangement and the movement of molecules and made the enriched and storytelling analogies more than the students of low achievement level. The students made the analogies that might induce misconceptions such that the molecules don't move in solid state or the particles could be changed according to the states.

  • Sliding accidents on the road have a high percentage by road freezing, especially, they often have appeared at bridges and Tunnel of freezing areas. Thus, the stability of road operations is enhanced by preventing partial freezing phenomenon. According to the geothermal snow melting system analysis, a pattern of thermal conductivity is found out; pavement materials of concrete and asphalt where the system is buried. The heat transfer simulation is essential when the geothermal snow melting system is applied according to heating exchanger pipe placed in the lower pavements. The model tests are conducted on low temperature in freezer using the manufactured test model which is equal to pavement materials. Many variables are discovered from numerical analyses under the same conditions with model test.

  • The usage of Ground Granulated Blast Furnance Slag (GGBFS) has been increased recently. Studies on the cement hydration model incorporating GGBFS as well as the properties of cement paste done with GGBFS such as compressive strength, hydration products and hydration heat have been the subjects of many researches. However, studies on the reaction degree of GGBFS that affect the properties of cement paste incorporating GGBFS are lacking globally and specially in Korea. Thus, in this study, the reaction degree of GGBFS using the method if selective dissolution, compressive strength, the amount of chemical bound water and $Ca(OH)_2$ were measured and analysed in accordance with water-binder ratio, replacement ratio of GGBFS, and curing temperature. The results show that the reaction degree of GGBFS, the amount of chemical bound water and $Ca(OH)_2$ in cement paste with GGBFS were higher in conditions where the replacement ratio of GGBFS was low and both water-binder ratio and curing temperature were high. Finally, the reaction degree of GGBFS was achieved at a value between 0.3~0.4.
