  • The characteristics of the longitudinal velocity in a $180^{\circ}$ constant-radius, recirculating laboratory channel were investigated. Three-dimensional velocity fields were measured using a side-looking ADV. The shortcomings of existing equations for longitudinal velocity are discussed. An eddy viscosity model is adopted in the downstream momentum equation. A mathematical equation was developed to describe the vertical distribution of longitudinal velocity. The comparisons of the longitudinal velocity show generally good agreement. It is found that the curvature change in the curved channel affects the vertical location of maximum velocity and the vertical profile of longitudinal velocity.

  • Elastic wave velocity measurement technique such as impact-echo method and ultrasonic pulse velocity method has been successfully used to evaluate the moduli and strength of concrete. However, estimation results obtained by the NDT methods do not agree well with real things because longitudinal wave velocity is influenced by various factors. In this paper, among several factors influencing P-wave velocity, the influence of moisture content in concrete was investigated through the experiment. Test results show that longitudinal wave velocity is significantly affected by the moisture content of concrete, i.e., the lower moisture content. the lower velocity. Moisture content influences rod-wave velocity measured by impact-echo method stronger than ultrasonic pulse velocity measured by transmission method. During drying process with ages. the difference of increasing rate between longitudinal wave velocity and compressive strength of concrete is gradually increased. Therefore, to establish more accurate relationship between longitudinal wave velocity and strength, the difference of the increasing rate should be considered.

  • Longitudinal and transverse normal zone propagation in the superconducting coil are analyzed and propagation velocity is derived from the heat balance equations in the propagating boundary region. Transverse velocity is nearly $10^{-2}$ order of longitudinal velocity. Propagation velocity ie linearly proportional to the transport current. Increasing lamp current speeds up longitudinal velocity by 0.279 m/s under the applied field of 2T. Transient heat transfer has a significant effect on normal zone propagation velocity and it decreases longitudinal velocity by 4.2 m/s under the applied field of 2T as being compared to steady-state heat transfer.

  • On-line and real-time information of the longitudinal velocity is the essential factor for the Advanced Vehicle Control Systems such as ABS(Anti-lock Brake System), TCS(Traction Control System), ESC (Electronic Stability Control) etc. However, the longitudinal velocity cannot be easily measured or calculated during braking maneuvering. A new algorithm is presented for the estimation of the longitudinal velocity with the measurements of the vehicle longitudinal/lateral acceleration, steering angle and yaw rate. The algorithm is designed utilizing the Extended Kalman Filter based on the 3 degree of freedom vehicle model. In order to compensate for the biased sensor signal on the inclined road, the inclined angle is also estimated. The performance of the proposed estimation algorithm is evaluated in field tests.

  • The aim of this study is that a theoretical formula for estimating the one-dimensional longitudinal dispersion coefficient is derived based on a transverse distribution equation for the depth averaged stream-wise velocity in open channel. In "Part I. Theoretical equation for stream-wise velocity" which is the former volume of this article, the velocity distribution equation is derived analytically based on the Shiono-Knight Method (SKM). And then incorporating the velocity distribution equation into a triple integral formula which was proposed by Fischer (1968), the one-dimensional longitudinal dispersion coefficient can be derived theoretically in "Part II. Longitudinal dispersion coefficient" which is the latter volume of this article. The proposed equations for the velocity distribution and the longitudinal dispersion coefficient are verified by using observed data set. As a result, the non-dimensional longitudinal dispersion coefficient is inversely proportional to square of the Manning's roughness coefficient and the non-dimensional transverse dispersion coefficient, and is directly proportional to square of the aspect ratio (channel width to depth).

  • The kinematically admissible velocity field is developed for the analysis of extruded products. The curving of product in extrusion is caused by the linearly distributed longitudinal velocity on the cross-section of the workpiece at the die exit. In the analysis, the longitudinal velocity in extrusion direction is divided into the uniform velocity and the deviated velocity. In order to satisfy the requrement of the kinematically admissible velocity field, the average value of the deviated velocity should be zero. At the same time, it should linearly change with the distance form the center of gravity of the cross-section of the workpiece. The results of the analysis show that the curvature of product increses with increses in eccentricity of gravity center of the cross-section of workpiece at die entrance form that of the cross-section at the die exit. • The usage of nondestructive testing on early-aged concrete leads to enhacned safty and allows effective scheduling of construction, thus making it possible to maximize the time and cost efficiencies. In this study, a reliable nondestructive strength evaluation method for early-aged concrete using the longitudinal wave velocity is proposed. Compression tests were performed to examine factors influencing the velocity-strength relationship of concrete, such as water-cement (w/c) ratio, fine aggregate ratio, curing temperature, and curing condition. The test results show that a change in the w/c ratio and curing temperature has minor effect on the velocity-strength relationship/ However, curing condition significantly influences the velocity-strength relationship of early-aged concrete. Moreover, the longitudinal wave velocity increases with decreasing fine aggregate ratio. It is concluded from this study that the strength evaluation of early-age concrete can be achieved by a nonlinear equation which considers the effects of curing condition and fine aggregate ratio.

  • In this study, the advanced on-sided stress wave velocity measurement method was applied to investigate the effects of composition, age and moisture content in concrete. Two concrete specimens that have different composition were used to figure out the change of the Longitudinal and Surface wave velocity due to different composition. The other concrete specimen was cast and the Longitudinal and Surface wave velocity was monitored during curing process. After 28-day old, the effect of moisture content in the concrete specimen to the stress wave velocity is presented in this paper during the time period 43-74 days after casting. For drying process. an aggregate drying oven was used. A conventional ultrasonic through transmission method was used to compare with the results determined by the one-sided method.

  • Various types of ultrasonic techniques have been used for the estimation of compressive strength of concrete structures. However, conventional ultrasonic velocity method using only longitudial wave cannot be determined the compressive strength of concrete structures with accuracy. In this paper, by using the introduction of multiple parameter, e. g. velocity of shear wave, velocity of longitudinal wave, attenuation coefficient of shear wave, attenuation coefficient of longitudinal wave, combination condition, age and preservation method, multiple regression analysis method was applied to the determination of compressive strength of concrete structures. The experimental results show that velocity of shear wave can be estimated compressive strength of concrete with more accuracy compared with the velocity of longitudinal wave, accuracy of estimated error range of compressive strength of concrete structures can be enhanced within the range of ${\pm}$10% approximately.

  • Availability of the climbing angle information is crucial for the intelligent vehicle system. However, the climbing angle information can't be measured with the sensor mounted on the vehicle. In this paper, climbing angle estimation system is proposed. First, longitudinal acceleration obtained from gyro-sensor is compared with the actual longitudinal acceleration of the vehicle. If the vehicle is in yawing motion, actual longitudinal acceleration can't be approximated from time derivative of wheel speed, because lateral velocity and yaw rate affect actual longitudinal acceleration. Wheel speed and yaw rate can be obtained from the sensors mounted on the vehicle, but lateral velocity can't be measured from the sensor. Therefore, lateral velocity is estimated using unknown input observer with nonlinear tire model. Simulation results show that the compensated results using lateral velocity and yaw rate show better performance than uncompensated results.
