  • Insulation material absorption rate is closely related to thermal conductivity. In Korea, there is no study on the change of insulation material in a long-term continuous exposure environment. In this study, basic data on the long-term durability of insulation materials were obtained by measuring the absorption rate of insulation materials over time. For the purpose of providing, as a result of the measurement, PIR class2 No.2 and PIR noncombustible show similar absorption rate trends, which is thought to be due to the fact that both are made of rigid urethane foam, and flame retardant EPS has the highest absorption rate except for PF. This is thought to be because there is a space for absorption between the beads and the beads. In the case of XPS, it is thought that the reason for showing the lowest absorption rate is that because it is produced by extrusion, it has a high density and thus has less space for moisture to penetrate.

  • Finishing materials used during the construction of reinforced concrete structures aid in providing resistance to carbonation and help ensure the durability of a structure. However, detailed examinations of this phenomena using data gained from long-term outdoor exposure are not only lacking, but also are not taken into account as factors affected by the local environment. In this research, the velocity coefficient in terms of carbonation is compared as a difference according to the local region and the averaged annual temperature, and the carbonation-preventive effects of finishing materials are analyzed. As an outcome of this study, the results of long-term carbonation can be evaluated from carbonation resistance R induced by an acceleration carbonation test.

  • This research aimed to clarify the long-term mechanical performance of a steel truss member strengthened by a carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) without protective coating through exposure testing. Strengthening and repair methods using CFRP have been developed in recent years; however, there is a lack of durability research for CFRP-strengthened members, especially mechanical performance investigation according to actual exposure testing. In this study, 10 CFRP-strengthening steel specimens were created in 2015, and elastic bending tests were conducted biannually. Eventually, although resin loss occurred due to environmental effects, the mechanical performance of CFRP-strengthened steel was not degraded, and we propose a calculation method of bending stiffness to evaluate the lower value of stiffness for design.

  • Over the past few decades, considerable numbers of studies on the durability of concrete have been carried out extensively. The majority of these researches have been performed on sound uncracked concrete, although most of in-situ concrete structures have more or less micro-cracks. It is only recent approach that the attention has shifted towards the influence of cracks and crack width on the penetration of chloride into concrete. The penetration of chlorides into concrete through the cracks can make a significant harmful effect on reinforcement corrosion. Author of this study examined the effect of cracks on chloride penetration by short term experiment. However, it is necessary to accomplish the effect by long term experiment to get reliable goal. In this study, the long term and short term experiments were carried out. This can be useful for establishing new species model of chloride penetration through cracks in concrete.

  • When GGBFS(Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag) with high blaine is incorporated in concrete, compressive strength in the initial period is improved, but several engineering problems arise such as heat of hydration and quality control. In this paper, compressive strength and durability performance of concrete with 3,000 Grade-low fineness slag are evaluated. Three conditions of concrete mixtures are considered considering workability, and the related durability tests are performed. Although the strength of concrete with 3,000 Grade slag is slightly lower than the OPC(Ordinary Portland Cement) concrete at the age of 28 days, but insignificant difference is observed in long-term compressive strength due to latent hydration activity. The durability performances in concrete with low fineness slag show that the resistances to carbonation and freezing/thawing action are slightly higher than those of concrete with high fineness slag, since reduced unit water content is considered in 3,000 Grade slag mixture. For the long-term age, the chloride diffusion coefficient of the 3000-grade slag mixture is reduced to 20% compared to the OPC mixture, and the excellent chloride resistance are evaluated. Compared with concrete with OPC and high fineness GGBFS, concrete with lower fineness GGBFS can keep reasonable workability and durability performance with reduced water content.

  • In order to improve polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) durability, the durability of membrane electrode assemblies (MEA), in which the electrochemical reactions actually occur, is one of the vital issues. Many articles have dealt with catalyst layer degradation of the durability-related factors on MEAs in relation to loss of catalyst surface area caused by agglomeration, dissolution, migration, formation of metal complexes and oxides, and/or instability of the carbon support. Degradation of catalyst layer during long-term operation includes cracking or delamination of the layer which result either from change in the catalyst microstructure or loss of electronic or ionic contact with the active surface, can result in apparent activity loss in the catalyst layer. Membrane degradation of the durability-related factors on MEAs can be caused by mechanical or thermal stress resulting in formation of pinholes and tears and/or by chemical attack of hydrogen peroxide radicals formed during the electrochemical reactions. All of these effects, the mechanical damage of membrane and degradation of catalyst layers are more facilitated by uneven stress or improper MEA fabrication process. In order to improve the PEMFC durability, therefore, it is most important to minimize the uneven stress or improper MEA fabrication process in the course of the fabrication of MEA. We analyzed the effects of the MEA fabrication condition on the PEMFC durability with MEA produced using CCM (catalyst coated membrane) method. This paper also investigated the effects of MEA fabrication condition on the PEMFC durability by adding additional treatment process, hot pressing and pressing, on the MEA produced using CCM method.

  • In this study, an extensive literature review has been conducted on the material characterization of UHPC and its potential for large-scale field applicability. The successful production of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) depends on its material ingredients and mixture proportioning, which leads to denser and relatively more homogenous particle packing. A database was compiled from various research and field studies around the world on the mechanical and durability performance of UHPC. It is shown that UHPC provides a viable and long-term solution for improved sustainable construction owing to its ultrahigh strength properties, improved fatigue behavior and very low porosity, leading to excellent resistance against aggressive environments. The literature review revealed that the curing regimes and fiber dosage are the main factors that control the mechanical and durability properties of UHPC. Currently, the applications of UHPC in construction are very limited due to its higher initial cost, lack of contractor experience and the absence of widely accepted design provisions. However, sustained research progress in producing UHPC using locally available materials under normal curing conditions should reduce its material cost. Current challenges regarding the implementation of UHPC in full-scale structures are highlighted. This study strives to assist engineers, consultants, contractors and other construction industry stakeholders to better understand the unique characteristics and capabilities of UHPC, which should demystify this resilient and sustainable construction material.

  • The internal or external restraint of thermal and dry shrinkage movements could thus generate tensile stresses in concrete pavement for early traffic opening. Restrained shrinkage and thermal stresses could produce microcracks in concrete which increase its permeability and accelerate its long-term deterioration under weathering and load effects. Fiber reinforced concrete is an effective approach to the control of microcrack and crack development under tensile stresses. This study aims at evaluation of the durability of high early strength concrete for early traffic opening and increase of service life. Three different types of regulated-set cement which recently has been used much in Korea were adopted. Fibers were added and their mixtures were compared with plain high early strength concrete mixture. The use of fibers increased durability performance of high early strength concrete using regulated-set cement than the corresponding plain mixtures.

  • Photocatalytic cement is receiving attention due to its high oxidation power that oxidizes nitrogen oxides (NOx), thus contributing to clean atmospheric environment. However, there has not been a thorough investigation on durability of a parent material, cementitious material, as a result of photocatalytic reactions. In this study, durability of photocatalytic cementitious materials exposed to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas was examined. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles containing cement paste samples were exposed to cycles of NO2 with UV light, followed by wetting and drying to simulate environmental condition. The surface of samples was characterized mechanically, chemically, and visually during the cycling. The results indicate that the photocatalytic efficiency decreased with continued NO2 oxidation due to calcium carbonate formation. The pits found from SEM demonstrate that chemical deterioration have occurred, such as acid attack or leaching. In conclusion, the photocatalytic reactions and its product could alter cementitious materials chemically and mechanically which could further affect long-term durability.
