  • This paper proposes a method to endow the mobility to the Zigbee protocol which is a short distance wireless communication technology among the standards of wireless sensor networks. The Zigbee has a low price, long life battery, simple structure and connectivity. So it is a suitable standard for the short distance wireless communication of $10m{\sim}70m$. As the Zigbee does not support the mobility, additional factors should be studied to deal adeptly with the diverse change in the real field. By solving the problem that the previous connection and binding table of the Zigbee end device should be reset due to the Zigbee end device address variation when the Zigbee end device moves from the present router to another router, this paper presents the method to communicate without data loss or disconnection.

  • The tradeoff between energy conservation and traffic balancing is a dilemma problem in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). By analyzing the intrinsic relationship between cluster properties and long distance transmission energy consumption, we characterize three node sets of the cluster as a theoretical foundation to enhance high performance of WSNs, and propose optimal solutions by introducing rendezvous and Mobile Elements (MEs) to optimize energy consumption for prolonging the lifetime of WSNs. First, we exploit an approximate method based on the transmission distance from the different node to an ME to select suboptimal Rendezvous Point (RP) on the trajectory for ME to collect data. Then, we define data transmission routing sequence and model rendezvous planning for the cluster. In order to achieve optimization of energy consumption, we specifically apply the economic theory called Diminishing Marginal Utility Rule (DMUR) and create the utility function with regard to energy to develop an adaptive energy consumption optimization framework to achieve energy efficiency for data collection. At last, Rendezvous Transmission Algorithm (RTA) is proposed to better tradeoff between energy conservation and traffic balancing. Furthermore, via collaborations among multiple MEs, we design Two-Orbit Back-Propagation Algorithm (TOBPA) which concurrently handles load imbalance phenomenon to improve the efficiency of data collection. The simulation results show that our solutions can improve energy efficiency of the whole network and reduce the energy consumption of sensor nodes, which in turn prolong the lifetime of WSNs.

  • Tracking the location (position) of a surface or underwater marine vehicle is important as part of guidance and navigation. While the Global Positioning System (GPS) works well in an open sea environment but its use is limited whenever testing scaled-down models of such vehicles in the laboratory environment. This paper presents the design, development and implementation of a low energy ultrasonic augmented single beacon-based localization technique suitable for such requirements. The strategy consists of applying Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) to achieve location tracking from basic dynamic distance measurements of the moving model from a fixed beacon, while on-board motion sensor measures heading angle and velocity. Iterative application of the Extended Kalman Filter yields x and y co-ordinate positions of the moving model. Tests performed on a free-running ship model in a wave basin facility of dimension 30 m by 30 m by 3 m water depth validate the proposed model. The test results show quick convergence with an error of few centimeters in the estimated position of the ship model. The proposed technique has application in the real field scenario by replacing the ultrasonic sensor with industrial grade long range acoustic modem. As compared with the existing systems such as LBL, SBL, USBL and others localization techniques, the proposed technique can save deployment cost and also cut the cost on number of acoustic modems involved.

  • Acoustic signal, which is a main carrier of underwater communication, attenuates along the traveled path heavily depending on the frequency as well as inter-node distance. In addition, since it has a long propagation delay, the conventional medium access control (MAC) schemes requiring complex signaling procedures and accordingly heavy overhead messages would not be appropriate in underwater communications. In this paper, we propose a code division multiple access (CDMA) scheme as a solution for MAC of underwater communication and evaluate the performance. A hierarchical data-gathering tree topology is considered and a staggered wake-up pattern is employed for the purpose of energy saving. As a performance measure, the data rate at each level of hierarchical topology is derived.

  • Various wireless sensor network protocols have been proposed to maintain the network for a long time by minimizing energy consumption. Using the K-means clustering algorithm takes longer to cluster than traditional hierarchical algorithms because the center point must be moved repeatedly until the final cluster is established. For K-means clustering-based protocols, only the residual energy of nodes or nodes near the center point of the cluster is considered when the cluster head is elected. In this paper, we propose a new wireless sensor network protocol based on K-means clustering to improve the energy efficiency while improving the aforementioned problems.

  • Recently many countries are researching actively underwater sensor networks for securing ocean resources and changes of ocean environment in all over the world. Current the commercial modem are not suitable because it has characteristics of long distance, higher price, larger power consumption with the special object mainly. In this paper, a low power and compact underwater communication modem which is suitable for underwater sensor networks is implemented. It is comprised by using a simple analog circuit for non-coherent BFSK modulation method, ultra low power MCU and orthogonal codes with a less operation and a simple implementation. It was experimented an underwater communication using our modem in a water tank and open sea farms. It communicates fewer than $10^{-4}$ bit error rate.

  • To maintain safety and reliability of reactors, redundant sensors are usually used to measure critical variables and estimate their averaged time-dependency. Nonhealthy sensors can badly influence the estimation result of the process variable. Since online condition monitoring was introduced, the online cross-calibration method has been widely used to detect any anomaly of sensor readings among the redundant group. The cross-calibration method has four main averaging techniques: simple averaging, band averaging, weighted averaging, and parity space averaging (PSA). PSA is used to weigh redundant signals based on their error bounds and their band consistency. Using the consistency weighting factor (C), PSA assigns more weight to consistent signals that have shared bands, based on how many bands they share, and gives inconsistent signals of very low weight. In this article, three approaches are introduced for improving the PSA technique: the first is to add another consistency factor, so called trend consistency (TC), to include a consideration of the preserving of any characteristic edge that reflects the behavior of equipment/component measured by the process parameter; the second approach proposes replacing the error bound/accuracy based weighting factor ($W^a$) with a weighting factor based on the Euclidean distance ($W^d$), and the third approach proposes applying $W^d$, TC, and C, all together. Cold neutron source data sets of four redundant hydrogen pressure transmitters from a research reactor were used to perform the validation and verification. Results showed that the second and third modified approaches lead to reasonable improvement of the PSA technique. All approaches implemented in this study were similar in that they have the capability to (1) identify and isolate a drifted sensor that should undergo calibration, (2) identify a faulty sensor/s due to long and continuous missing data range, and (3) identify a healthy sensor.

  • The current visible light communication (VLC) systems have a short transmission distance and a low data rate. To overcome this, we studied on the method of appling MIMO technology to VLC. However, it is difficult to apply the original MIMO technology used in RF frequency to wireless VLC. In VLC system, a lens can be used to separate the transmitted signals. And, if we use an image sensor as the receiver, MIMO technology can be applied to LED wireless visible light communication. In this paper, we report an experiment of $2{\times}2$ LED wireless visible light communication using a commercial image sensor receiver. We show the experimental demonstration with a transmission length of 10.5 m and a data rate of 200 bit/s.

  • As WSN is energy constraint so energy efficiency of nodes is important. Because avoiding long distance communication, clustering operating in rounds is an efficient algorithm for prolonging the lifetime of WSN and its performance depends on duration of a round. A short round time leads to frequent re-clustering while a long round time increases energy consume of cluster heads more. So existing clustering schemes determine proper round time, based on the parameters of initial WSN. But it is not appropriate to apply the round time according to initial value throughout the whole network time because WSN is very dynamic networks nodes can be added or vanished. In this paper we propose a new algorithm which calculates the round time relying on the alive node number to adapt the dynamic WSN. Simulation results validate the proposed algorithm has better performance in terms of energy consumption of nodes and loss rate of data.
