  • XML has been established as a de facto standard for representing and exchanging documents, and has been widely used as a logical data model. Using XML as a logical database model, it requires a conceptual model for the semantics that XML has. However, the existing conceptual models, such as Entity Relationship models and UML, have been extended their concepts to express the specific characteristics of XML, but so far, there are no standard models. This paper compares the characteristics of the typical model of conceptual model of XML by Extended Entity Relationship model from the perspective of database field. For this, we propose the requirements that must be met for XML, and on the basis of these requirements, the approaches of each model are compared.

  • Gila Sher believes that Tarskian definition of logical consequence is a conceptually and extensionally adequate explanation. She has tried to show this on the basis of Mostowskian conceptions of generalized quantifiers as being invariant under isomorphic structures and her own conceptions of models. In this paper I try to show that her attempt to justify the Tarskian definition is only partially successful. I admit that her conceptions of the logical as being invariant under isomorphic structures are enough to show the logical formality of logical consequence relations. But I think that since her conceptions of meanings of terms are quite inadequate for dealing with the problem of empty predicates, she fails to distinguish logically necessary truths from other kinds of truths.

  • This paper presents a tool that automatically generates mobile web applications from user interface (UI) models which are based on PELUM (Pattern and Event based Logical User Interface Modeling). PELUM is a method for the effective development of UI-centered embedded systems via UI modeling. The proposed tool consists of a model editor and a code generator. The former provides an environment for modeling a Logical UI Model (LUM) and a Programming Interface Model (PIM) on the web. On the other hand, the code generator sets the screen configuration and events' behavior, according to the LUM, synthesizing a local database schema according to the PIM, and then generates an executable mobile web app. It also can produce mashup web apps by receiving an open API address via the PIM. The generated mobile web apps follow the Model-View-Controller (MVC) architecture in order for users to easily customize them. The proposed tool enables them to generate mobile web apps that can be executed on various devices by modeling logical UIs on the web.

  • It is commonly believed that the model-theoretic account of logical consequence is originated from Tarski' s 1936 paper. But Etchemendy has denied this. This paper discusses and evaluates the recent controversies over whether the definition of logical consequence presented in Tarski' s paper is based on the fixed-domain conception or the variable-domain conception.

  • Previous researches on the effect of programming learning upon logical thinking ability have used a standardized test to measure logical thinking ability in the general and comprehensive aspect after programming learning. Considering that the areas of intelligence are separated from one another and work independently, the existing standardized tool to measure general and comprehensive logical thinking ability has a limitation in measuring a logical thinking ability required at specific areas. Thus this study extracted logical thinking and its sub-factors related to computer programming and suitable for the level of cognitive development through analyzing standardized test sheets at home and abroad, and developed logical thinking test I and II of the same form according to a development procedure model. The result of verifying the developed logical thinking tests proved that the two tests are logical thinking tests of the same form. The developed tests can be utilized in identifying the effect of programming learning upon logical thinking and its sub-factors.

  • Tank, which is a representative ground weapon system, is one of the most important weapon systems in each country. For the cost-effective acquisition of a tank based on scientific analysis, the operational concept and effectiveness should be studied based on engagement simulation technology. Besides physical capabilities including maneuver and communication, logical models including decision-making of a tank commander should be developed systematically. This paper describes a method to model a tank for engagement simulation based on Base System Model(BSM), which is the standard architecture of the weapon system model in AddSIM, an integrated engagement simulation software. In particular, a method is proposed to develop logical models by hierarchical and modular approach based on human decision-making model. The proposed method applies a mathematical formalism called DEVS(Discrete EVent system Specification) formalism. It is expected that the proposed method is widely used to study the operational concept and analyze the effectiveness of tanks in the Korean military in the future.

  • The importance of algorithm education has been emphasized for creative problem-solving capability. Especially, algorithm teaching materials related with mathematics and science are under development to enhance logical thinking. However, there are not enough teaching-learning models applicable in the field of education. Therefore, this paper proposed a teaching-learning model for effective algorithm education. The teaching-learning model reflects two characteristics : an algorithm learning process is spiral, and algorithm education is based on logical thinking. Furthermore, a survey was conducted for students' satisfaction, and the result was a mixed teaching-learning model with PBL, SDL, and peer tutoring. Based on the proposed model, examples of classes for mathematics and science are suggested to show the feasibility of effective algorithm education.

  • There have been lots of research on temporal data management for the past two decades. Most of them are based on some logical data model, especially on the relational data model, although there are some conceptual data models which are independent of logical data models. Also, many properties or issues regarding temporal data models and temporal query languages have been studied. But some of them were shown to be incompatible, which means there could not be a complete temporal data model, satisfying all the desired properties at the same time. Many modeling issues discussed in the papers, do not have to be done so, if they take object-oriented data model as a base model. Therefore, this paper proposes a temporal data model, which is based on the object-oriented data model, mainly discussing the most essential issues that are common to many temporal data models. Our new temporal data model and query language will be illustrated with a small database, created by a set of sample transaction.

  • In developing total hospital information system, large amount of time and expense are to be spent while its results are likely to lead itself to end-users' dissatisfaction. Some of the main complaints on the part of end-users come from insufficient consideration of end-users environment as well as inappropriate representation of their requirement in the system alalysis and design. This papre addresses some advantages of Essential Logical Modeling Process for better analysis and design, explaining by example the developmental process of the Patent Management and Accounting System for a tertiary care hospital. In the case, the Essential Model, suggested by McMenamin and Palmer, proved to be an effective tool for clear separation of analysis and design phase and for better communication among system developers and with end-users. The modeling process itself contributed to better program modularity as well, shown in a Structured Chart. Difficulties in learning how to identify' essential activities' for the modeling practice were experienced in the beginnins stage, which were, however, overcome by elaborating some heuristic guideling and by rdferring to necessary tools including State Transition Diagram, Control Flow Diagram, and so many. While full evaluation of the Essential Model usag remains to wait till the completion of the case project, its strengt in making clear distinction between analysis and design phase was enough to be attractive to system analysts. The model concepts are open to many further application fields, particularly such areas as business re engineering, process remodeling, office automation, and organizational restructuring.
