  • In this study a multi-site daily precipitation generator which generates the precipitation with similar spatial correlation, and at the same time, with conserving statistical properties of the observed data is developed. The proposed generator is intended to be a tool for down-scaling the data obtained from GCMs or RCMs into local scales. The occurrences of precipitation are simultaneously modeled in multi-sites by 2-parameter first-order Markov chain using random variables of spatially correlated while temporally independent, and then, the amount of precipitation is simulated by 3-parameter mixed exponential probability density function that resolves the issue of maintaining intermittence of precipitation field. This approach is applied to the Nakdong river basin and the observed data are daily precipitation data of 19 locations. The results show that spatial correlations of precipitation series are relatively well simulated and statistical properties of observed precipitation series are simulated properly.

  • Our goal is to obtain a better scientific understanding how to define the nature and role of remotely sensed land surface parameters and energy fluxes in the heat island phenomena, and local and regional weather and climate. By using the MODIS visible and thermal imagery data and analyzing the surface energy flux images associated with the change of the landcover and landuse in study area, we will estimate and present how significant is the magnitude of the heat island heat effect and its relation with the surface parameters and the energy fluxes in Taiwan. To achieve our objective, we used the energy budget components such as net radiation, soil heat flux, sensible heat flux, and latent heat flux in the study area of interest derived form remotely sensed data to understand the island heat effect. The result shows that the water is the most important component to decrease the temperature, and the more the consumed net radiation to latent heat, the lower urban surface temperature.

  • The world is suffered from severe environmental problems such as climate change and global warming due to radical industrialization after the Industrial Revolution. With advancement of science and information technologies, national borders have become meaningless. In this global trend, movable exhibition shall be supposed to pursue "Local in Global." Thus, movable exhibition should get involved in an effort to find a cultural identity in the globalization and to better our position among the various cultures. As an alternative, movable exhibition can be established by combining biomimicry, which is biomimicry of life by imitating biological system, with Flexibility of movable space. By providing a hint to environmental problems and cultural uncertainty, this alternative will generate an advanced exhibition trend that is more environmental-friendly and more efficient. As a cumulative concept created by the nature for 3.8 billion years, biomimicry has evolved a lot more than the modern science. By catching this point, "A study on flexibility of movable exhibition through biomimicry notion" is providing a revolutionary paradigm stepping beyond the current exhibition trend, which pursues coexistence of human beings and the nature and, at the same time, introduces our culture.

  • Purpose: This article aims to explore the new town development paradigm against infectious diseases. The distribution of COVID-19 constricts economic activity. The high frequency of outbreaks of COVID-19 nationwide is due to neither malnutrition nor unhygienic environment. Research design, data and methodology: The research question starts with the idea that understanding the features of the outbreak of pandemic diseases could help public health authorities to better cope with upcoming risks in the future. We have employed a big data-based methodology to explore the outbreak of pandemic diseases. Also, an idiographic approach is used to describe the distribution of new towns against COVID-19. Results: The results demonstrate that the rapid spread of COVID-19 has had a strong impact on regional economies and urban development. It was found that there is a close relationship between infectious diseases outbreaks and new town development. Conclusions: The findings could be used to deal with new town development against infectious diseases better in other cities or countries as well. The distribution of COVID-19 may become an unexpected opportunity for a paradigm shift in the distribution of new town development to prevent not only an excessive concentration in Seoul, but also an imbalance between national and local development.

  • Cool roofs are currently being emerged as one of important mechanism to save energy in relation to the building. This paper reviews worldwide experiences (USA, Japan and EU etc) for the potential benefits cool roofs offer in relation to building energy saving for comparison purposes. It is confirmed that there is a significant potential to the energy saving by introducing the cool roof in a Korean climate because of similarity in terms of HDD (Heating Degree Day) and CDD (Cooling Degree Day) as those countries reviewed. Such a comparative study highlights that the type of measurements performed and the quantitative parameters reported from the countries should be standardized in Korean context in order to implement further comparable experiments for scientifically sound investigations. It is anticipated that this research output could be used as a valuable reference in implementing a Nation-wide cool roofing strategy in the central and local governments since a suitable technical, more objective direction has been proposed based on the measured, fully quantitative performance of the involved components of a cool roof system in the global context. From this critical review, a very important step has been made concerning the practicality of cool roof in Korean context. Ultimately, the suggestion in this paper will greatly contribute to opening new possibilities for introducing cool roof in this country, proposed as an initial aim of this paper.

  • As the $CO_2$ from buildings take up approximately 25% of the total $CO_2$ emission, the need for regulating and managing this emission is urgently required. Thus this study recognizes $CO_2$ emission status for diverse purposes and suggests accurate interpolation method for visualizing $CO_2$ emission as the basic data for regulating and managing $CO_2$ emission by applying IDW, Spline, and Kringing method. Results showed that Gaussian Function application among the Kriging methods had the highest accuracy in its estimations, with 3.049 with RMSE standards. This could be used as the basic data when visualizing $CO_2$ emission status, which is a necessity for many local and federal governments that are to regulate and manage $CO_2$ emission. This study shows that the interpolation is very appropriative method in recognizing $CO_2$ emission characteristics for regional climate change measures.

  • Water vapor in the atmosphere is an influential factor of the hydrosphere cycle, which exchanges heat through phase change and is essential to precipitation. Because of its significance in altering weather, the estimation of water vapor amount and distribution is crucial to determine the precision of the weather forecasting and the understanding of regional/local climate. It is shown that it is reliable to measure precipitable water (PW) using long baseline (500-2000km) GPS observations. However, it becomes infeasible to derive absolute PW from GPS observations in Taiwan due to geometric limitation of relatively short-baseline network. In this study, a method of deriving Near-Real-Time PW from short baseline GPS observations is proposed. This method uses a reference station to derive a regression model for wet delay, and to interpolate the difference of wet delay among stations. Then, the precipitable water is obtained by using a conversion factor derived from radiosondes. The method has been tested by using the reference station located on Mt. Ho-Hwan with eleven stations around Taiwan. The result indicates that short baseline GPS observations can be used to precisely estimate the precipitable water in near-real-time.
