  • Genetic algorithms are efficient techniques for searching optimum solution but have the premature convergence problem getting stuck in the local optimum according to the evolutionary operator. In this paper we analyzed the reason for converging to the local optimum and proposed the method which able transit to the global optimum from the local optimum. In these methods we used the variable evolutionary operator with the average hamming distance, to maintain the genetic diversity of the population for getting out of the local optimum. The theoretical results are proved by the simulation experiments.

  • This paper proposes a novel optimization algorithm inspired by water flowing and shaking behaviors in a vessel. Water drops in our algorithm flow to the gradient descent direction and are sometimes shaken for getting out of local optimum areas when most water drops fall in local optimum areas. These flowing and shaking operations allow our algorithm to quickly approach to the global optimum without staying in local optimum areas. We experimented our algorithm with four function optimization problems and compared its results with those of particle swarm optimization. Experimental results showed that our algorithm is superior to the particle swarm optimization algorithm in terms of the speed and success ratio of finding the global optimum.

  • This study involves the development of a computer program to analyze the local buckling stresses for the flange and the web of I-beams under compression at elevated temperatures, and the optimization algorithm to analyze the optimum width-thickness ratios which does not occur their local buckling prior to yield failure. The high-temperature stress-strain relationships of steel used in this study were based on EC3 (Eurocode3) Part1.2 (2000b). In this study, the local buckling stresses and the optimum width-thichness ratios were analyzed considering the influences of the yield stress, local buckling coefficients and width-thickness ratios of the flange and the web. Design examples show the applicability of the computer program developed in this study.

  • This paper provides a simple but effective method, cost relaxation to escape from a local optimum of the traveling salesman problem. We would find a better solution if we repeat a local search heuristic at a different initial solution. To find a different initial solution, we use the cost relaxation method relaxing the cost of arcs. We used the Lin-Kernighan algorithm as a local search heuristic. In experimental result, we tested large instances, 30 random instances and 34 real world instances. In real-world instances, we found average 0.17% better above the optimum solution than the Concorde known as the chained Lin-Kernighan. In clustered random instances, we found average 0.9% better above the optimum solution than the Concorde.

  • In constructing a superhigh communications network, investment in broadband of local loop is the most necessary. In this paper, it is performed to extract an optimum local loop by means of a comparative study after investigation and analysis of each construction structure of local loop. This paper is presented the way of construction of an economically optimum superhigh network by measurement in various circumstances, comparison and analysis of cost per node and star and ring in topology for constructing an optimum superhigh local loop.

  • An optimum thermal design analysis of the combined cycle power plant with triple pressure heat recovery steam generator was performed by the numerical simulation. The optimum design module used in the paper is DNCONF, a function of IMSL Library, which is widly known as a method to search for the local optimum. The objective function to be minimized is the cost of total power plant including the steam turbine power enhancement premium. The result of this paper shows that the cost reduces if the design point of power plant becomes the local optimum, and many calculations at various initial conditions should be carried out to get the value near the global optimum.

  • Recently, the importance of vibration reduction at the local structure such as tank, deck which attached machinery and compass deck, has continuously increased by owner and shipbuilder. Because crews are afflicted with them and severe vibration problems affect on the crack of structure. This study conducted optimum design to get a stiffener size of local structure to reducing the vibration level and dec leasing the weight of structure in ship. Random tabu search method (R-Tabu) has fast converging time and can search variables size domains for nonlinear problems. This paper used Nastran external call type independence optimization method which makes using a solver module from Nastran.

  • Structural optimization has been carried out in continuous design space or in discrete design space. Generally, available designs are discrete in design practice. However, the methods for discrete variables are extremely expensive in computational cost. An iterative optimization algorithm is proposed for design in a discrete space, which is called a sequential algorithm using orthogonal arrays (SOA). We demonstrate verifying the fact that a local optimum solution can be obtained from the process with this algorithm. The local optimum solution is defined in a discrete design space. Then the search space, which is a set of candidate values of each design variables formed by the neighborhood of a current design point, is defined. It is verified that a local optimum solution can be found by sequentially moving the search space. The SOA algorithm has been applied to problems such as truss type structures. Then it is confirmed that a local solution can be obtained by using the SOA algorithm

  • Dynamic Encoding Algorithm for Searches (DEAS) which is known as a fast and reliable non-gradient optimization method, was proposed [1]. DEAS reaches local or global optimum with binary strings (or binary matrices for multi-dimensional problem) by iterating the two operations; bisectional search (BSS) and unidirectional search (UDS). BSS increases binary strings by one digit (i.e., 0 or 1), while UDS performs increment or decrement of binary strings in the BSS' result direction with no change of string length. Because the interval of UDS exponentially decreases with increment of bit string length (BSL), DEAS is difficult to escape from local optimum when DEAS falls into local optimum. Therefore, this paper proposes hopping UDS (HUDS) which performs UDS by hopping as many as BSL in the final point of UDS process. HUDS helps to escape from local optimum and enhances a probability searching global optimization. The excellent performance of HUDS will be validated through the well-known benchmark functions.

  • Until now, the 40% of wall thickness criterion, which is generally used for the plugging of steam generator tubes, has been applied only to a single cracked geometry. In the previous study by the authors, a total number of 9 local failure prediction models were introduced to estimate the coalescence load of two collinear through-wall cracks and, then, the reaction force model and plastic zone contact model were selected as the optimum ones. The objective of this study is to estimate the coalescence load of two collinear through-wall cracks in steam generator tube by using the optimum local failure prediction models. In order to investigate the applicability of the optimum local failure prediction models, a series of plastic collapse tests and corresponding finite element analyses for two collinear through-wall cracks in steam generator tube were carried out. Thereby, the applicability of the optimum local failure prediction models was verified and, finally, a coalescence evaluation diagram which can be used to determine whether the adjacent cracks detected by NDE coalesce or not has been developed.
