  • To evaluate the vertical loads on railway bridges, conventional load tests are typically conducted. However, these tests often entail significant costs and procedural challenges. Railway conditions involve nearly identical load profiles due to standardized rail systems, which may appear straightforward in terms of load conditions. Nevertheless, this study aims to validate load tests conducted under operational train conditions by comparing the results with those obtained from conventional load tests. Additionally, static and dynamic structural behaviors are extracted from the measurement data for evaluation. To ensure the reliability of load testing, this research demonstrates feasibility through comparisons of existing measurement data with sensor attachment locations, train speeds, responses between different rail lines, tendency analysis, selection of impact coefficients, and analysis of natural frequencies. This study applies to the Dongho Railway Bridge and verifies the applicability of the proposed method. Ten operational trains and 44 sensors were deployed on the bridge to measure deformations and deflections during load test intervals, which were then compared with theoretical values. The analysis results indicate good symmetry and overlap of loads, as well as a favorable comparison between static and dynamic load test results. The maximum measured impact coefficient (0.092) was found to be lower than the theoretical impact coefficient (0.327), and the impact influence from live loads was deemed acceptable. The measured natural frequencies approximated the theoretical values, with an average of 2.393Hz compared to the calculated value of 2.415Hz. Based on these results, this paper demonstrates that for evaluating vertical loads, it is possible to measure deformations and deflections of truss railway bridges through load tests under operational train conditions without traffic control, enabling the calculation of response factors for stress adjustments.

  • For temporary excavation support in a congested urban area, the strand of ground anchor should be removed to get permission of the private land to install anchors. But the strand doesn't need to be removed in the outside city area after use. So the anchor body, tension anchor, is fabricated in-situ. The unbonded length of This anchor has several strands, which wrap only one sheath. When the anchor body is carried into job-site or installed in the bore hole, the sheath is torn easily because it is a very week material. So the grout permeate into the torn sheath. Because of that, the load doesn't transfer to the bond length of ground anchors. It may indicate that load is being transferred along the unbonded length and thus within the potential slip surface assumed for overall stability of the anchored system. The load tests were performed on seven low-pressure grouted anchors installed in weathered soil to verify its problems. Four anchors(Type A) have the unbonded length, which consist of five strands and a week sheath and three anchors(Type B) have strands, which is covered by plastic sheath filled with grease, in the unbonded length. Both anchors are compared with load tests results.

  • This study investigates the appropriate range of reverse bending load for the CTOD test of thick weld by observing improvement of pre-crack shape and determination of the limit applicable load. In order to do it, the effect of the amount of the reverse bending load on the maximum deviation of the pre-crack length was investigated by the extensive tests, and the variation of plastic zone size in way of the crack tip under reverse bending load were evaluated by FEA. With the results obtained by the experiments and FEA, the proper range of reverse bending load was suggested. The effectiveness of the reverse bending method was verified by examining the pre-crack straightness after CTOD tests of thick weld specimens with various thickness and strength.

  • A fatigue capsule is one of the special capsules to investigate the fatigue characteristics of the nuclear materials during an irradiation test in a research reactor, HANARO. In this study, the performance test and the preliminary fatigue test results by using a cyclic load device newly developed for a fatigue capsule are described. In order to obtain the characteristics such as a realization and a controllability of the periodic wave shape and the relationship between the pressure and the load, a spring and rigid bar specimens are used. The fatigue test for the 316L stainless steel specimen with 1.8mm in diameter and 12.5mm in gage length is also performed under the same conditions as the temperature($550^{\circ}C$) of the specimen during irradiation tests. As a result of the test, the fracture of the specimen occurs at a total of 70,120 cycles(about 12 days), and the displacement in this case is 2.02 mm. It is expected that these results will be used for determining test conditions and a comparison of the in-pile fatigue test results.

  • This study was carried out to measure the mechanical properties and the acoustic emission (AE) characteristics of the carbon fiber reinforced composites of several types of the stacking sequence. AE signals were detected during the tensile tests. The number of ringdown counts, total ringdown counts were plotted together with the load-displacement curves. The tensile load-displacement behavior of specimen is compared and discussed based on the measured AE properties in relation to the failure mechanism. With the increase of load, AE signals increased. This showed that failure had being propagated by matrix deformation and cracking, delamination, fiber debonding and breakage. Felicity ratio has been obtained by observation of ;the Kaiser effect according to the variation of load ratio. The reloading tests showed that the felicity ratio decreased obviously when the load ratio or damage increased. These AE characteristics are hopeful to be employed as the criteria to evaluate the failure processes of composites.

  • The wheel bearing hub unit is developed type of wheel bearing unified with the hub parts. It has advantage of reducing the weight and the number of components. And, it also improves uniformity of manufacturing quality, In order to design the wheel bearing hub units, many techniques are used such as load analysis, structure analysis and bearing characteristics analysis and so forth. These techniques need highly accurate load conditions founded on service conditions. In this study, to design the wheel bearing hub units used widespread in passenger cars, the service load was measured through driving tests on the public roads and in the special events. The public roads are classified into highway, intercity road, rural road, urban road, and unpaved road so as to know what the characteristics of the road loads are. The results of the tests showed that the wheel force was relative to the lateral acceleration, and also could be calculated from the lateral acceleration. The lateral acceleration was measured from 0.0G to 0.6G in general driving on the public roads, with different distributions in each road type. In special events, the maximum lateral acceleration was measured from 0.8G to 1.3G.

  • This study was carried out the laboratory tests and field plate load test in order to evaluate the reinforcement effect of geocell for road construction. The geocell-reinforced subgrade shows the increment of cohesion and friction angle with comprison of non-reinforced subgrade. In addition, the field plate load test was performed on the geocell-reinforced subgrade to estimate the bearing capacity of soil. The direct shear test was conducted with utilizing a large-scale shear box to evaluate the internal soil friction angle with geocell reinforcement. The number of cells in the geocell system is varied to investigate the effect of soil reinforcement. The theoretical bearing capacity of subgrade soil with and without geocell reinforcement was estimated by using the soil internal friction angle. The field plate load tests were also conducted to estimate the bearing capacity with geocell reinforcement. It is found out that the bearing capacity of geocell-reinforced subgrade gives 2 times higher value than that of unreinforced subgrade soil. In the future, the reinforcement effect of the geocell rigidity and load-balancing effect of the geocells should be evaluated.
