J and CTOD Estimation for Homogeneous and Bi-Material Fracture Toughness Testing Specimens

  • This paper proposes J and CTOD estimation schemes applied to fracture toughness testing, covering typical homogeneous and bi-material specimens. Recommendations are based on the plastic limit analysis (either slip line field or finite element limit analyses), assuming the rigid plastic material behavior. The main outcome of the present study is that the J and CTOD estimation schemes (both codified and non-codified), recommended for homogeneous specimens, can be equally used for bi-material specimens with interface cracks. The effect of yield strength mismatch in bi-material specimens on the J-integral CTOD is discussed.

  • This paper presents an optimal operation of microgrid systems and considering a tie-lines capacities that concerned each grid. The microgrid system consists of a wind turbine, a diesel generator, and a fuel cell. An one day load profile and wind resource for wind turbine generator were used for the study. For the grid interconnection, tie-line capacities were applied as constraints. The capacity constraints of tie-lines in production cost analysis are very important issues in the operation and planning of microgrid. In optimization, the Harmony Search (HS) algorithm is used for solving the problem of microgrid system operation which a various generation resources are available to meet the customer load demand with minimum operating cost. The application of HS algorithm to optimal operation of microgrid proves its effectiveness to determine optimally the generating resources without any differences of load mismatch.

  • This paper presents an application of Harmony Search (HM) meta-heuristic optimization algorithm for optimal operation of microgrid system. The microgrid system considered in this paper consists of a wind turbine, a diesel generator, and a fuel cell. An one day load profile which divided 20 minute data and wind resource for wind turbine generator were used for the study. In optimization, the HS algorithm is used for solving the problem of microgrid system operation which a various generation resources are available to meet the customer load demand with minimum operating cost. The application of HS algorithm to optimal operation of microgrid proves its effectiveness to determine optimally the generating resources without any differences of load mismatch and having its nature of fast convergency time as compared to other optimization method.

  • This paper proposes a new control method for the supercapacitor (SC) to compensate the pulsed load and to enhance the power quality of the DC microgrid. By coordinating the operating frequency, the SC is controlled to handle the surge current, while the low-frequency current component is dealt with by the remaining sources in the system. The operation mode of the SC unit is automatically changed based on the state of charge and DC bus voltage level. Meanwhile, the mismatch in the power demand is covered by the SC unit by regulating the DC bus voltage level. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified experimentally by the prototype with two distributed generators and one SC unit.

  • One of the recurring problems facing energy control center dispatchers each day is how to operate the system during the periods of high load pick up and fluctuation. This method reduces the problem to a forward - revised by backward - sequence of dispatch problem, with the generator Limits being carefully adjusted between each time interval in the total intervals to be optimized. It is applied to system of 31 units. It is observed that the method presented here achieves that generation fellows the load changes without any mismatch.

  • This paper proposed a new control method for supercapacitor (SC) to compensate the pulse load transient and enhance the power quality of dc microgrid. By coordinating the operation frequency, the supercapacitor is controlled to handle the surge current component while the low-frequency current component is dealt with by remaining sources in the system. Based on the state of charge and dc bus voltage level, the SC unit operation mode is automatically decided. Meanwhile, the dc bus voltage level indicates the power demand of the whole system; by regulating the dc bus voltage, the mismatch of power demand is covered by SC unit. The effectiveness of proposed method is verified by experiment prototype formed by two distributed generation and one supercapacitor unit.

  • This paper introduces a real-time load flow program for Korean energy management system(EMS). This study is concentrated on the following aspects. First, we propose the model of the real-time database and power system equipment for the real-time load flow. These models are extracted from the needs of load flow functions and are designed to the application common information. Second, several techniques are applied for the efficient convergence and computational speed. The generation/load mismatch is redistributed using generator participation factors which are separated to the reference bus. For the voltage control, the jacobian matrix is composed with the basic Y matrix elements and the voltage control elements. Through the optimally ordering, jacobian row and column for a column is changed. However all jacobian matrix entries have same order with the Y matrix. The proposed program is tested using the Korea Electric Power Corporation(KEPCO) system. Through the test, we verified that the proposed program can be effectively used to accomplish the Korean EMS system.

  • Power system is becoming more and more complex and large Existing procedural programming technique can't cope with software flexibility and maintenance problems. So, Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) is increasingly used to solve these problems. OOP in power system analysis field has been greatly developed. This paper applies OOP in power flow analysis, and presents new algorithm which uses only a Jacobian to solve mismatch equations, and introduces a new sparse matrix storage method which is different from existing method.   • A new design for easily controlling operating frequency of an antenna-integrated planar oscillator is introduced. The oscillator circuit of a broadband negative-resistance active part and a passive load including a patch antenna. The patch resonance is used for determining the oscillation frequency. This design reduces the possibility of mismatch between antenna radiation and oscillation frequencies. To achieve optimum output power, load-pull simulation for the negative-resistance circuit is used. The load-pull simulation shows the feed point and the delay of feed line can affect the oscillation power. Two negative-resistance circuits capable of supporting oscillation over full C-band and X-band are fabricated. The oscillation frequency, output power and phase noise for different patch antennas are measured.

  • This paper describes a Adaptive Impedance Tuning Circuit which can be adaptively tuned between circuit's characteristic impedance and the arbitrary load impedance. The Adaptive Impedance Tuning Circuit is consisted of such parts as mismatch sensor, impedance tuner and tuning algorithm. Each parts's design methods proposed in other papers are compared with their advantages and disadvantages. And we propose simple design method for Adaptive Impedance Tuning Circuit using a ${\lambda}/4$ transmission line and ${\pi}$-network. Calculation formulas and selection algorithm from calculated values of a complex load impedance are proposed and simulation using induced calculation formulas and selection algorithm is performed. Simulation results show good agreement with theoretical predictions.
