One for All - Artemisia absinthium (Afsanteen) "A Potent Unani Drug"

  • The therapeutic use of the wormwood plant Artemisia absinthium L. dates back to at least Roman times. There are more than 200 plants in the genus Artemisia- including southern wormwood, petite wormwood and Grande wormwood and encompasses about 500 species. The best-known species of wormwood is Artemisia absinthium, native to temperate Eurasia and North Africa and is branded for its extreme bitterness. It is a magical greens booze used as carminative to support healthy appetite, balances healthy flora, cleanse the digestive tract of parasite and toxins. It possesses anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, hepatoprotective, anti-helminthic and anti-depressant activity. Thujone excites nervous system when taken in small amount. Due to contrary history of wormwood, its application in individuals should be preceded by a thorough and cautious risk-benefit analysis. In this appraisal an attempt is done to validate scientifically, mentioned therapeutic potential of Artemisia absinthium in classical Unani literature using PubMed, Science Direct researches.

  • Kidney diseases including acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease are among the largest health issues worldwide. Dialysis and kidney transplantation can replace a significant portion of renal function, however these treatments still have limitations. To overcome these shortcomings, a variety of innovative efforts have been introduced, including cell-based therapies. During the past decades, advances have been made in the stem cell and developmental biology, and tissue engineering. As part of such efforts, studies on renal cell therapy and artificial kidney developments have been conducted, and multiple therapeutic interventions have shown promise in the pre-clinical and clinical settings. More recently, therapeutic cell-secreting secretomes have emerged as a potential alternative to cell-based approaches. This approach involves the use of renotropic factors, such as growth factors and cytokines, that are produced by cells and these factors have shown effectiveness in facilitating kidney function recovery. This review focuses on the renotropic functions of bioactive compounds that provide protective and regenerative effects for kidney tissue repair, based on the available data in the literature.

A Brief Review on Murraya paniculata (Orange Jasmine): pharmacognosy, phytochemistry and ethanomedicinal uses

  • Objectives: Murraya paniculata (family-Rutaceae), popularly known as orange jasmine, is the most important evergreen plant. The Rutaceae family is economically significant due to its diverse edible fruits and essential oils. Methods: Murraya paniculata extracts (MPE) of leaf have been shown to include phenolic compounds, highly oxygenated flavonoids, flavanones, sesquiterpenoids, polymethoxy glycosides, and coumarins. Cyclocitral, methyl salicylate, trans-nerolidol, cubenol, isogermacrene, -cadinol, and cubeb-11-ene are all abundant in MPE. The usages of various parts of this plant, such as bark, leaves and flower, as a remedy for a variety of ailments as widely recorded in the traditional literature. The plant has anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, antibacterial, anti-implantation, anti-oxidative, cytotoxic, anti-diarrheal, antidepressant and anti-anxiety properties and many others. Results: The goal of the review is to reignite interest in this potential plant, encouraging researchers to continue their research in order to uncover novel therapeutic compounds for the treatment and management of a range of infections. The current review provided a comprehensive overview of this traditional unique plant. Conclusion: The review paves a way for exploring its active chemical elements with substantial pharmacological values further for potential benefits of mankind.

CLINICAL STUDY ON EFFECT OF VIRECHANA KARMA (THERAPEUTIC PURGATION)

  • The study has been carried out for the comparative analysis of relevant literature in order to highlight the present topic "Clinical study on effect on Virechana karma (therapeutic purgation)". Total no. of 40 cases has been selected from OPD and IPD of Panchakarma department, through proper history taking and clinical examination prior to VirechanaKarma. Only VirechanaKarmaYogya subjects were selected for the VirechanaKarma. Analysis of VirechanKarma on the basis of Vegiki (purgative bouts), Maniki (quantity), Langiki (clinical features) and Aantiki (end product) features were done in this study. In this study a highly significant relief was found in patients i.e. p<0.001 due to Virechana mainly vitiated PittaDosha (the heat energy in the body) and secondary Kaphadosha (mucus) and VataDosha (subtle energy associated with movement) are being expelled out which might have accounted for better relief in VirechanYogya (indicated) individuals (Pitta Pradhan Vyadhi (vitiated pitta), RaktajRoga (hemopoietic diseases), ShodhanYogyaAvastha (detoxification), etc.) in the above group of patients. VirechanaDravyas have properties like Tikshna (hyperfunction), Sukshma(subtle), Ushna (heat), etc. are described in Ayurvedic classics which play a vital role in the mode of action of VirechanaKarma has also been explained under probable mode of action.

Narrative Review of the Association between Cervical Region Treatment and Facial Paralysis

  • Facial nerve palsy refers to sudden, unilateral lower motor neuron facial paralysis. This study aimed to determine the importance of neck treatment in the treatment of facial paralysis. A literature search was performed on six online databases and other sources until January 15, 2023. A total of 426 papers were retrieved. After excluding duplicated and inconsistent papers, papers not including cervical treatment, and experimental papers on animals, two papers were finally selected. The type of treatment method, therapeutic effects, assessment of the risk of bias in randomized controlled trials, and non-randomized controlled trials and side effects were evaluated. Chiropractic, manual therapy, facial meridian massage, and acupotomy were applied to the face and cervical spine region. The results showed that each treatment had a significant therapeutic effect through evaluation index measurement methods, such as the visual analog scale and Yanagihara's unweighted regional grading system. This study demonstrated the importance of the cervical spine area in the treatment of facial paralysis. However, this study has many limitations. Thus, high-quality randomized controlled comparative studies on the treatment of the cervical spine area only or studies that include cervical spine area treatment as an interventional treatment while performing oriental or comprehensive treatment are needed.

국내 노인 대상 음악중재연구 내 치료 논거 세부 분석 (Therapeutic Rationale for Music Therapy Interventions With Older Adults: An Analysis of the Literature)

  • 본 연구에서는 노인 대상 음악중재연구의 내용 구성과 음악사용에 대한 근거를 확인하여 향후 연구에 필요한 자료와 개선 방향을 제시하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 국내 노인 대상 음악중재연구의 전반적 특성, 중재내용의 특징, 치료 논거 기술 특징 및 적절성 등으로 구분된 기준을 통해 연구 자료를 세부적으로 분석하였다. 국내 KCI등재(후보)학술지 게재논문 33편이 1차 분석 대상으로 선정되었고, 이 중 연구자가 설정한 기준에 따라 23편을 선정하여 2차 분석을 시행하였으며, 최종적으로 5편을 선별하여 기술된 치료 논거의 적절성과 특징을 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 논거 기술에 대상자의 진단적 특성이 고려되지 않았거나 두 가지 이상의 음악 활동이 복합적으로 진행되어 중재의 목표가 분명하게 제시되기 어려운 연구들이 많았다. 또한 음악의 선곡 기준이 목표활동에 대한 음악 요소의 사용논거보다는 대상자의 선호도나 친숙도를 근거로 하고 있음을 확인하였다. 이와 같은 사실은 노인 대상 음악중재연구 시 중재기술의 구체성과 이를 뒷받침하는 치료적, 음악적 논거가 보완되어야 하고 중재 목표에 따른 타당한 이론적 근거의 필요성을 시사하는 결과로 볼 수 있다. 본 연구는 국내 노인 대상 음악중재연구의 치료적 논거를 세부적으로 분석하여 중재의 임상적 자료를 제공하고, 추후 연구에 요구되는 연구의 방향과 개선 방안을 제시하는 데 의의가 있다.

암 치료 표적으로써 cathepsin S (Cathepsin S as a Cancer Therapeutic Target)

  • Cathepsin은 리소좀에 존재하는 효소로, 엔도좀-리소좀 경로를 통하여 손상된 단백질의 분해를 유도한다. 이러한 cathepsin은 활성화되는 촉매 잔기 위치(catalytic residue site)에 따라 cysteine, aspartate, serine cathepsin으로 나뉜다. 다양한 암세포에서 cysteine cathepsin은 유전자 증폭이나 전사, 번역, 전사 후 단계를 통해 높은 발현을 유지한다. 특히 cathepsin S의 경우, 다른 cysteine cathepsin과 달리 중성 pH 환경에서도 안정적으로 활성도를 유지하며 특정 조직에서 발현이 제한적이라는 특징을 가지고 있기 때문에 질병의 미세환경에서 중요한 역할을 한다. 면역세포에서의 cathepsin S는 불변 사슬(invariant chain)을 분해하여 항원 제시에 중요한 MHC class II의 활성화를 통해 면역 반응을 조절하며, 암세포에서의 cathepsin S는 전이와 혈관신생을 조절함으로써 암세포의 성장을 증가시키는 역할을 한다. Cathepsin S의 발현 조절에 문제가 생기면 암, 관절염, 심혈관 질환을 포함한 많은 병리학적 현상에 영향을 미친다. 특히 암세포에서 cathepsin S의 발현 억제와 결함은 혈관신생을 억제시킬 뿐만아니라, 암세포의 성장과 전이를 감소시키고 세포사멸을 유도한다. 따라서, cathepsin S는 암 치료에 있어 좋은 표적이 될 수 있다.

Review of Tumor Dormancy Therapy Using Traditional Oriental Herbal Medicine

  • Objective: Standard cancer therapy prolongs survival, but can be detrimental to the quality of life, compromise the immune system, and leave residual disease that can cause recurrence years or decades in the future. Tumor dormancy therapy is a novel therapeutic approach that may improve these shortcomings, promote quality of life, and prolong survival. The aim of this study was to analyze studies on dormancy therapy, especially studies using traditional Oriental herbal medicine, so as to evaluate the efficacy of dormancy therapy with traditional oriental herbal medicine. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature review using Scientific and Technical Information Integration Services (NDSL), PubMed, and RISS. We searched for clinical reports, papers, and books related to tumor metastasis, recurrence, immunotherapy, tumor dormancy, and traditional oriental herbal medicine with anticancer effects. Seventy-nine (79) experimental and clinical articles in both Korean and English were reviewed. This study was conducted from March 1, 2012 to May 31, 2012. Results: This approach, Tumor dormancy therapy, rather than seeking to remove the tumor, includes combination of low-dose chemotherapy, immunotherapy, immunosurveillance, and other methods to stabilize tumor growth and to enhance the host is immunity against disseminated tumor cells and thus to manage cancer as a chronic disease while maintaining quality of life. In particular, integrative use of Oriental herbal medicine has been shown to induce or maintain tumor dormancy, increase the effectiveness of conventional chemotherapy, improve quality of life, and prolong survival. Conclusion: Tumor dormancy therapy is a promising novel therapeutic approach that may be especially effective with Oriental herbal medicine. Further research is needed to determine its potential mechanisms and therapeutic applications.

HeLa.S3(SC) 세포계의 집락형성에 미치는 방사선의 효과 (Radition Effect on Colony Formation of HeLa.S3(SC) Cell Line)

  • 임상적으로 많이 이용되는 범위의 방사선 조사에서는 증식능의 상실을 세포사망으로 정의를 내린다. 본 연구는 실험용 orthovoltage조사기를 이용하여 확립된 세포주인 Hela.53(5C)를 대상으로 각각 100 cGy, 200 cGy, 400 cGy 및 600 cGy 방사선조사 후 2주일간 배양후 crystal violet 염색을 하여 육안적으로 판별가능한 크기의 집락의 수를 산출하여 다음의 결과를 얻었다. HeLa.S3(SC) 세포의 집락 형성능은 0.464이었다. 세포의 생존곡선의 형태는 다표적, 1 hit 형태를 보였다. Do는 150 cGy, Dq는 80 cGy, 외삽치는 1.7이었다. 이 연구결과는 향후 다양한 방사선 생물학 연구에 참고자료로 이용 가능하리라 사료된다.

발모 향상을 위한 한약재의 개발 및 효과 확인 (Development and Evaluation of the Herbal Medicine for Hair Growth-promoting Activity)

  • Hair loss affects both men and women of all ages and often significantly affects social and psychologic health. Recent therapeutic approach for hair loss such as finasteride and minoxidil focused on regulation of hormonal system blood flow. However, long-term use of these drugs caused adverse effects. To develop herbal medicine for therapeutic effect on hair growth, here we screened the 10 medicinal herbs (Red ginseng, Licorice, Ulmus, Barberry root, Lycium root, Rehmanniae radix crudus, Sophora root, Sweet flag, Polygala root, Achyranthes) based on oriental medicine literature. We measured cytotoxicity, anti-oxidant activity, and $5-{\alpha}$ reductase inhibitory effect of the herbal medicine on human dermal papilla (DP) cells to investigate therapeutic effect of the herbal medicine. Treatment of the 1% herbal medicine did not show any cytotoxic effects, and cell growth was increased by treatment of the 0.1% herbal medicine. In addition, the herbal medicine showed stronger antioxidant activity than resveratrol and comparable inhibitory activity of $5-{\alpha}$ reductase with finasteride. Furthermore, when applied to in vivo mouse model, we also observed increases in the number and length of hair of the herbal medicine-treated group. These results suggest that the herbal medicine promotes hair growth by its antioxidant activity and inhibitory activity of $5-{\alpha}$ reductase and might therefore be a promising hair growth-promoting agent.
