Microstructures and Electrical Properties of (Na,K)NbO3-Based Piezoceramics Sintered with Glass Frit (유리 분말과 함께 소결한 (Na,K)NbO3계 압전체의 미세구조 및 전기적 특성)

  • $(Na,K)NbO_3$-based piezoelectric ceramics were synthesized by a liquid phase sintering method with a selected glass frit. The effects of the content of the glass frit and the sintering temperature on the microstructure and the electrical properties of the samples were investigated. With the 0.1 wt% of glass frit content, $(Na_{0.52}K_{0.44}Li_{0.06})(Nb_{0.84}Ta_{0.10}Sb_{0.06})O_3$ (NKL-NTS) ceramics showed the maximum values of the relative density (99.1%) and the electro-mechanical coupling factor ($k_p$: 0.32) at the sintering temperature of $1,050^{\circ}C$. It might mean that a liquid phase sintering with a suitable glass frit having the lower flow temperature could improve the relative density and the piezoelectric properties.

  • Keys to the attainment of tailored properties in SiC ceramics are microstructure control and judicious selection of the sintering additives. In this study, three different strategies for controlling microstructure of liquid-phase-sintered SiC ceramics (LPS-SiC) have been suggested: control of the initial $\alpha-SiC$ content in the starting powder, a seeding technique, and a post-sintering heat treatment. The strategies suggested offer substantial flexibility for producing toughened SiC ceramics whereby grain size, grain size distribution, and aspect ratio can be effectively controlled. The present results suggest that the proposed strategies are suitable for the manufacture of toughened SiC ceramics with improved toughness.

Effects of MgO Addition on Densification and Microstructural Development during Liquid-Phase Sintering of Alumina-Anorthite System (알루미나-anorthite 계의 액상소결에서 MgO의 첨가가 치밀화 및 미세구조에 미치는 영향)

  • Densification behavior and microstructural evolution during the liquid-phase sintering of alumina-anorhite system were investigated as a function of MgO addition. When MgO component was added in either alumina or anorthite glass powder the aspect ratio of alumina grains decreased and concurrently the are of flat interface which was formed as a result of contact solid alumina gains rather increased. Consequently addition of MgO component in the Al2O3-amorthite system brought about suppression of the rearrangement of solid grains during the liquid phase sintering and then densification of specimens was also retarded.

  • The equilibrium or growth shape of ceramic materials is classified largely into two categories according to the thermodynamic conditions imposed. One is a polyhedral shape where the surface free energy is anisotropic, and the other a spherical shape where the surface free energy is isotropic. In the case of grains with a polyhedral shape of anisotropic surface free energy, socalled abnormal grain growth usually takes place due to a significant energy barrier for a growth unit to be attached to the crystal surface. In the case of grains with a spherical shape of isotropic surface free energy, however, normal grain growth with a uniform size distribution takes place. In this contribution, the state-of-the-art of our current understanding of the relationship between the crystal shape and the microstructure evolution during the sintering of ceramic materials in the presence of a liquid phase was discussed.

Dissolution and Reprecipitation Behavior of TiC-TiN-Ni Cermets During Liquid-Phase Sintering

  • An attempt was made to understand the dissolution and reprecipitation behavior of the constituent phases such as TiC, TiN, and Ti(CN) in TiC-TiN-Ni system. During the liquid-phase sintering the TiC phase was found to dissolve preferentially in Ni binder. The solid-solution phase, Ti(CN), formed around the TiN phase, resulting in a core/rim structure. This result was reproduced when large TiC particles were used with fine TiN particles. The path for the microstructural change in TiC-TiN-Ni system was largely controlled by the difference in the interfacial energy of each phase with the liquid binder phase. The results were discussed with thermodynamic principles.

  • Effects of compacting pressure on the electrical and sintering characteristics of Cu25Cr contact material have been investigated. Cu25Cr contact materials were prepared by solid and liquid-phase sintering methods varying compacting pressure. Influence of compacting pressure on electrical characteristics were investigated in the cylindrical stainless-steel vessel using L-C resonant circuit. The physical and electrical properties of solid-phase sintered Cu25Cr material were found to be improved by increased compacting pressure. On the other hand, it was found that compacting pressure had little influence in case of liquid-phase sintered Cu25Cr material. After conditioning, contact resistance of Cu25Cr material was decreased regardless of compacting pressure. With increased compacting pressure, interrupting ability was shown to be increased.

Liquid Phase Sintering of Silicon Carbide (탄화규소의 액상소결)

  • Systematic studies of the effects of additives and processing variables on the sintered density and the effect of crystalline forms of starting powders on the microstructure of pressureless sintered silicon carbide are described. Oxide additives were effective for the densification of SiC up to 96% of theoretical density at temperature as low as 185$0^{\circ}C$. Use of embedding powder increased the sintered density, up to 98% of theoretical density, by decreasing the weight loss during sintering. Composite type duplex microstructure has been developed due to the $\beta$longrightarrow$\alpha$ phase transformation of SiC by sintering at 185$0^{\circ}C$ and heat treatment at 195$0^{\circ}C$ for 1h.

  • A theoretical model describing the behavior of isolated pores during liquid phase sintering was developed and the experimental results obtained by the $80MgO-CaMgSiO_4$ specimens were given. Most of isolated pores once formed in the interior of specimen were not eliminated because the pressure of trapped non-diffusable gas in the pore like $N_2$ increases very rapidly with pore volume contraction. As sint-ering time increase it was observed that the number of pores decreases whereas the average size of pore increases. This phenomenon was interpreted in terms of the MgO growth during sintering which results in the coalescence of isolated pores. The increase of pore size resulting from pore coalescence was attributed to the main cause of the overfiring phenomena ; the higher sintering temperature or a long time sintering leads to a decrease in density.

  • Sintering behavior of nanostructured(NS) W-Cu powders prepared by mechanical alloying (MA) was investigated as a function of sintering temperature. MA NS W-2owt%Cu and W-3owt%Cu composite powders with the crystal size of 20-30 nm were annealed at 90$0^{\circ}C$, and thermal characteristics of those powders were investigated by DSC. Sintering behavior of MA NS W-Cu composite powders was investigated during the solid-state sintering and the Cu-liquid phase sintering. The new nanosintering phenonenon of MA W-Cu powders at solid-state sintering temperature was suggested to explain the W-grain growth in the inside of MA powders. The sintering densification of MA NS W-Cu powders was enhanced at Cu melting temperature by arrangement of MA powders, i.e., the first rearrangement of MA powders was occurred, and then the rearrangement of W-grains in the sintered parts was also took place during liquid-phase sintering, i.e., the second rearrangement was happened. Due to the double rearrangement process of MA NS W-Cu powders, the high sintered density with more than 96%o was obtained and the fine and high homogeneous state of W and Cu phases was achieved by sintering at 1200 $^{\circ}C$.

  • The efficiency of fiber reinforced CMC(ceramic matrix composite) on the SiC materials have been investigated, in conjunction with the fabrication process by liquid phase sintering and the characterization. LPS-$SiC_f$/SiC composites was studied with the detailed analysis such as the microstructure, sintered density, flexural strength and fracture behavior. The applicability of carbon interfacial layer has been also investigated in the LPS process. Submicron SiC powder with the constant total amount and composition ratio of $Al_2O_3,\;Y_2O_3$ as sintering additives was used in order to promote the performance of the SiC matrix material. LPS-$SiC_f$/SiC composites were fabricated with hot press under the sintering temperature and applied pressure of $1820^{\circ}C$ and 20MPa for 1hr. The typical property of monolithic LPS-SiC materials was compared with LPS-$SiC_f$/SiC composites.
