In many semi-empirical analyses of flow boiling heat transfer, an annular flow is often assumed as a model flow and the local liquid film thickness is a key parameter in the analysis. This work considers a simple electrical conductance technique to estimate the local liquid film thickness in two-phase annular flows. In this approach, many electrodes are mounted flush with the inner wall of the pipe. Voltage differences between two neighboring electrodes for concentric annular flows with various liquid film thicknesses are obtained before the main experiments and logged in a look-up table. For an actual application in the annual flow, voltage differences of neighboring electrodes are measured and then corresponding local film thicknesses are determined by the interpolation of the look-up table. Even though the proposed technique is quite simple and straightforward, the numerical and static phantom experiments support its usefulness.
This paper deals with an experimental study on a liquid atomization to investigate the break- up mechanism of a liquid film flow which is formed by a high speed air flow in parallel direction and an atomization characteristics of a liquid film flow in order to provide the basic data for the development of the twin fluid atomizer. Authors had built the simplified, transparent new devices which can form a uniform thickness of liquid film and an electrical measuring circuit of the liquid film thickness. By introducing the new devices and the measuring circuit, the time variation of a liquid film thickness the mean diameter of the droplets, the droplet size distribution, the degree of the dispersion and the atomization rate of a liquid film are measured experimentally. As the analysis of the study, it can be said the experimental investigation will fairly contribute for further study in this field of study.
The tribological properties of eight different liquid crystals were investigated in a concentrated point contact device and a ball-on-flat contact. For comparison, the same tests were also performed with commercial greases and the corresponding base oils. Under the fully flooded conditions studied, liquid crystals in a concentrated point contact showed lower friction than commercial greases and greater film thickness dependence on rolling speed than grease base oils or greases. Test results also showed that the film thickness and friction were little influenced by the composition of the examined liquid crystals.
In this study, the thickness of the liquid sheet formed by two low speed impinging jets was measured by the direct contact method. The effects of jet velocity and liquid viscosity on the thickness were analyzed and the results were compared with theoretical modeling and optical thickness measurement results. The liquid film thickness decreased as the radius and circumferential angle increased. The jet velocity did not affect the liquid film thickness as predicted in theoretical modeling. In the theoretical modeling, there was no influence of the fluid properties on thickness, but in the case of low viscosity liquids, the thickness was predicted high, and it was well matched in high viscosity liquids. The direct measurement results showed no significant difference from the optical measurement results, thus confirming the reliability of the optical measurement method.
To understand a two-phase flow, a liquid film thickness is one of the important factors. A lot of researches have been performed to measure liquid film thickness with various approaches. Recently, an electrical conductance method which uses the conductivity of the liquid film has been widely applied on measuring the liquid film thickness. Though the electrical method has an advantage in high spatial resolution, as the conductivity of liquid can be affected by its temperature variation, the conventional electrical conductance methods have a limitation in being applied on varying temperature conditions where a heat transfer is involved. The purpose of this study is to develop a three-ring liquid film sensor that overcomes the limitation of the conventional method. The three-ring conductance method can measure the film thickness regardless of temperature variation by compensating the change of liquid conductivity. Considering its application on a wide range of conditions such as high temperature or curved surfaces, the sensor was fabricated on flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) in this study. This paper presents the concept of the measurement method, design procedure, prototype sensor fabrication and calibration results.
This paper deals with an experimental study on the initial condition of liquid film surface waves disintegration and investigation on the behavior of liquid film surface waves formed by the high speed air flow on the solid plane surface. The authors conducted the qualitative and quantitative study to in vestigate the liquid film flow phenomena, the liquid film disintegration mechanism, and droplet formation process with breaking the liquid film surface wave. The newly devised transparent rectangular test section which has semi-two-dimensional flow at the center of the bottom was introduced to perform the experimental study, and it can generate the uniform thickness liquid film at the bottom. The strobo streak camera was used to obtain the instantaneously transformed photographs. The electronic measuring device was also used to measure the liquid film thickness variation in order to perform the easy and effective analysis of complex flow phenomena in the air-water cocurrent flow.
In a severe reactor accident, a crust will form on the surface of the molten material during the core melting process. The crust will have a contact melting with the internal components of the reactor. In this paper, the contact melting process of the molten material on the austenitic stainless steel plate bundles is studied. The contact melting model of parabolic molten material on the plate bundles is proposed, and the rule and main effect factors of the contact melting are analyzed. The results show that the melting velocity is proportional to the slope of the paraboloid, the heat flux and the distance between two plates D. The influence of melt gravity and the plate width on melting velocity is negligible. The thickness of the molten liquid film is proportional to the heat flux and plate width, and it is inversely proportional to the gravity. With the increase of D, the liquid film thickness decreases at first and then increases gradually. The liquid film thickness has a minimum against D. When the width of the plate is small, the width of the plate is the main factor affecting the thickness of the liquid film. The parameters are coupled with each other. In a severe reactor accident, the wider internal components of reactor, which can increase the thickness of the melting liquid film and reduce the net input heat flux from the molten material to the components, are the effective measures to delay the melting process.

This paper deals with the flow characteristics of air-water two-phase flow in a vertical tube of 10mm I.D. and 600mm in length at an adiabatic condition. The obtained experimental data were covered with the liquid superficial velocity ranging from 0.095m/s to 2.56m/s. and the gas superficial velocity ranging from 0.032m/s to 21.08m/s. The effects of the gas and liquid superficial velocity on the flow pattern transitions, frictional pressure drop, and film thickness and gas-liquid interface roughness were also examined. It was found that the film thickness increased and the liquid film wave length was more longer with the liquid superficial velocity $j_L$ increasing at $j_G$ constant. It was also showed that the frictional pressure drops were experienced in three regions. namely increasing region(bubbly flow), decreasing region (Taylor bubble and slug flows) and re-increasing region (annular flow).
Vertical falling liquid film is extensively used in heat and mass transfer processes of many applications, such as evaporative coolers, cooling towers, and absorption chillers. In such cases, it is required that the falling film spreads widely in the surface forming thin liquid film to enlarge contact surface. An addition of surface active agent to a falling liquid film or hydrophilic surface treatment affects the fluid physical properties of the film. Surfactant addition not only decreases contact angle between the liquid and solid surface but also changes the surface from hydrophobicity to hydrophilicity. In this study, the effects of contact angle on falling film characteristics over a vertical surface have been investigated experimentally. The contact angle is varied either by an addition of surfactant to the liquid or by hydrophilic surface treatment. It is found that the wetted area is increased and film thickness is decreased by the hydrophilic treatment as compared with those of other surfaces. With this hydrophilic treatment, the falling liquid film spreads out widely in the surface. As surfactant concentration is increased, wetted area is also increased and the film thickness is substantially decreased.
The liquid fuel film on the cylinder liner is believed to be a major source of engine-out hydrocarbon emissions in SI engines, especially during cold start and warm-up period. Quantifying the liquid fuel film on the cylinder liner is essential to understand the engine-out hydrocarbon emissions formation in SI engines. In this research, two-dimensional visualization was carried out to quantify liquid fuel film on the quartz liner in an SI engine test rig. The visualization was based on laser-induced fluorescence and total reflection. Using a quartz liner and a special lens, only the liquid fuel on the liner was visualized. The calibration technique was developed to quantify the fluorescence signal with the thickness gage and the calibration device. The fluorescence intensity increases linearly with increase in the fuel film thickness on the quartz liner. Using this technique, the distribution of the fuel film thickness on the cylinder liner was measured quantitatively for different valve lifts and injected fuel mass in the test rig.
