Effects of melatonin on hepatic glutathione-peroxidase (GSH-Px) and glutathione-reductase (GSH-reductase) activities were studied in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats administered i.p. (10 mg/kg body weight) with melatonin during 15 days. The activity of cytosolic GSH-reductase in the liver was not changed by melatonin. However, melatonin injection increased significantly the activity of liver cytosolic GSH-Px activity compared with those in saline-treated rats. At the same time, plasma GSH-Px was also increased significantly in melatonin-treated rats. Since GSH-Px, a major antioxidative enzyme, removes $H_2O_2$ and lipid peroxides which are formed during lipid peroxidation from cellular membrane, such elevation of heptatic GSH-Px activity may contribute to the improvement of antioxidative effects under oxidative damage in the liver.
Maxwell-Displacement-Current(MDC) measuring technique has been applied to the study of monolayers of Dilauroylphosphatidylcholine (L-.alpha.-DLPC) and Dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (L-.alpha.-DMPC). The displacement current was generated from monolayers on a water surface by monolayer compression. Displacement current was generated when the area per molecule was about 250.angs.$^{2}$, 280.angs.$^{2}$. Displacement current was generated in the gas state, gas/liquid state, and liquid state in the course of monolayer compression. The orientational change of molecules in monolayers was discussed on the basis of the MDCs obtained. Finally, we measured differential thermal analysis of sample.

Signal peptides of secretary proteins interact with various membranes and non-membrane components during the translocation. We investigated the interaction of signal peptides of ribose binding protein (RBP) with Escherichia coli (E.coli) signal recognition particle (SRP), SecA and lipid bilayer. Previous studies showed that the functional signal peptides inhibit the GTPase activity of E.coli SRP which consisted of F로 and 4.5S RNA.(omitted)

Here we present how a supramolecular complex of Glycyrrhizic acid (GA) with Menthol (Mt) affects the blood glucose levels and glycogen synthesis in the liver of rats in in-vivo experiments with diabetes caused by alloxan. We have shown that Menthol, Glycyrrhizic acid and GA:Mt supramolecular complexes can restore functional dysfunction of the liver mitochondria in alloxan diabetes, i.e., inhibit lipid peroxidation. The hypoglycemic activity and mitochondrial membrane stabilizing properties of the supramolecular complex GA:Mt (4:1) in alloxan diabetes were more pronounced than those of menthol, GA and its GA:Mt (2:1) and GA: Mt (9:1) supramolecular complexes.
Ferroptosis is a new kind of programmed cell death of which occurrence in microorganisms is not clearly verified. The elevated level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) influences cellular metabolisms through highly reactive hydroxyl radical formation under the iron-dependent Fenton reaction. Iron contributes to ROS production and acts as a cofactor for lipoxygenase to catalyze poly unsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) oxidation, exerting oxidative damage in cells. While ferroptosis is known to take place only in mammalian cells, recent studies discovered the possible ferroptosis-like death in few specific microorganisms. Capacity of integrating PUFA into intracellular membrane phospholipid has been considered as a key factor in bacterial or fungal ferroptosis-like death. Vibrio species in bacteria and Saccharomyces cerevisiae in fungi exhibited certain characteristics. Therefore, this review focus on introducing the occurrence of ferroptosis-like death in microorganisms and investigating the mode of action underlying the cells based on contribution of lipid peroxidation and iron-dependent reaction.
Ferroptosis is a novel mechanism of programmed cell death, characterized by intracellular iron overload, intensified lipid peroxidation, and abnormal accumulation of reactive oxygen species, which ultimately resulting in cell membrane impairment and demise. Research has revealed that cancer cells exhibit a greater demand for iron compared to normal cells, indicating a potential susceptibility of cancer cells to ferroptosis. Stomach and colorectal cancers are common gastrointestinal malignancies, and their elevated occurrence and mortality rates render them a global health concern. Despite significant advancements in medical treatments, certain unfavorable consequences and drug resistance persist. Consequently, directing attention towards the phenomenon of ferroptosis in gastric and colorectal cancers holds promise for enhancing therapeutic efficacy. This review aims to elucidate the intricate cellular metabolism associated with ferroptosis, encompassing lipid and amino acid metabolism, as well as iron metabolic processes. Furthermore, the significance of ferroptosis in the context of gastric and colorectal cancer is thoroughly examined and discussed.
Membrane disruption by an antimicrobial peptide (AMP) was investigated by measuring the $^2H$ solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of 1-palmitoyl-$d_{31}$-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine (POPC_$d_{31}$) in mixtures of POPC_$d_{31}$/cholesterol and either magainin 2 or aurein 3.3 deposited on thin cover-glass plates. The line shapes of the experimental $^2H$ solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) spectra were best simulated by assuming the coexistence of a mosaic spread of bilayers containing pore structures and a fasttumbling isotropic phase or a hexagonal phase. Within a few days of incubation in a hydration chamber, an isotropic phase and a pore structure were induced by magainin 2, while in case of aurein 3.3 only an isotopic phase was induced in the presence of a bilayer phase. After an incubation period of over 100 days, alignment of the bilayers increased and the amount of the pore structure decreased in case of magainin 2. In contrast with magainin 2, aurein 3.3 induced a hexagonal phase at the peptide-to-lipid ratio of 1/20 and, interestingly, cholesterol was not found in the hexagonal phase induced by aurein 3.3. The experimental results indicate that magainin 2 is more effective in disrupting lipid bilayers containing cholesterol than aurein 3.3.
Leaf discs were excised from spinach leaves (Spinaia oleracea L.) and floated in phosphate buffer (pH 6.8) containing paraquat solutions (0, 0.1, 1.0, 10, 20, 50 and 100 ppm), and incubated in the growth chamber under 5, 500 lux illumination at $25^{\circ}C$ for 24 hr. Treatment with paraquat caused the formation of malondialdehyde (MDA), an indicator of lipid peroxidation in leaf discs. When 1.0, 10, 20, 50 and 100 ppm of paraquat solutions were applied to leaf discs, the contents of MDA were increased by 63, n6, 100, 140 and 150% of the level without paraquat treatment, respectively. 1.0, 10, 20, 50 and 100 ppm of paraquat treatments reduced the amounts of ascorbic acid in leaf discs by 23, 35, 38, 42 and 56% of the level without paraquat treatment respectively. Activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in leaf discs of 1.0, 10, 20, 50 and 100 ppm of paraquat treatments were decreased by 23, 42, 48, 61 and 70% of the level of SOD in non-treated group, respectively. The results suggest that paraquat may cause peroxidation of membrane lipid in spinach leaves as a result of paraquat-induced destruction of physiological defense against oxygen phytotoxicity.
Cationic liposome has been studied as one of the most promising non-viral gene delivery systems. In this report, we describe a new synthesized cholesterolic cationic lipid (2-aminoethylcarbamate-cholesterol) and dioleylphosphatidylethanolamine (DOPE) improve the cellular uptake properties of antisense ODNs, as well as plasmid DNA with low toxicity. This formulation of cholesterolic cationic lipid termed Chol-E, efficiently transfects ODNs and plasmids into many cell types in the presense or absence of 10% serum in the medium.
