  • In this study, equivalent linear damping and stiffness of a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) structure with a rotational friction damper are estimated using the result of experiments and compared with those obtained from non-linear time history analyses. First, the transfer function of the test model is constructed and then the equivalent stiffness and damping are calculated, using the half-power bandwidth (HPB) method. For comparative study, those properties are estimated based on stochastic theory in the time domain. Both equivalent linear systems identified from experiments and numerical analyses correspond well. Further, it is observed that there exists an optimal clamping force on the rotational friction damper from estimated equivalent damping.

  • This paper describes dynamic engine model that is appricable to idle speed control system development. A basic linear engine model responds to throttle and load torque Inputs to provide manifold pressure and speed outputs. Transfer functions are then derived for the modified linear engine model and significant dynamic characteristics are discussed. Lastly, the strategy for controlling idle speed uses the linear optimal control theory. The linear optimal regulator was designed using a state variable and the performance Index was minimized.

  • If the nonlinear term in a nonlinear control system equation can be deleted by state feedback control, the original system becomes a linear system. For this linear control system, many well known methods may be used to handle it, and then reverse it back to nonlinear form. Many problems of nonlinear control systems can be solved in this way. In this paper, this method will be used to transfer the identification problem of nonlinear systems into a linear control problem. The nonlinear observer is established by constructing linear observer. Then the state control of nonlinear systems is realized. Finally, the technique of the PID controller obtained by using bang-bang tracker as a differentiator provides a stronger robust controller. Even though the method in this paper may not theoretically perfect, many numerical simulations show that it is applicable.

  • Conventional design methods for CTD (charge transfer devices) FIR filters, whose coefficients consist of +1, 0, and -1, do not guarantee the phase linearity of the resulting filter, To obtain the linear phase filter, in this paper, an improved algorithm is presented based on the symmetry property of the linear phase filter coefficients. It has been shown that the proposed algorithm results in the linear phase filter and that the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm is reduced by an half of that in the existing method.

  • Evaluation of fatigue strength considering the springing effect of very large container ships is crucial in the design stage. In this study, we established a fatigue strength evaluation method considering a linear springing component in the frequency domain. Based on a three-dimensional global model, a fluid-structure interaction analysis was performed and the modal superposition method was applied to determine the hot spot stress at the hatch corner of very large container ships. Fatigue damage was directly estimated using the stress transfer function with a linear springing response. Furthermore, we proposed a new methodology to apply the springing effect to fatigue damage using hull girder loads. Subsequently, we estimated the fatigue damage contribution due to linear springing components along the ship length. Finally, we discussed the practical application of the proposed methods.

  • As known generally, when permanent magnets whose poles are upward and downward in order, arranged into the circumferential direction rotate under the conducting plate, the rotating force acts on the plate as well as the repulsive force. If the magnetic field by the magnet wheel(the above rotating permanent magnets) is partially shielded, the magnet wheel over open region can be a linear induction motor. The distinct feature from induction motor is that the traveling magnet field is produced by the moving permanent magnet instead of ac current. Furthermore, a variation of the open region changes the direction of the thrust force. In this paper, we introduce a concept of the linear actuator using the magnet wheel. Under the above shielding condition, a few simulation results and its verification from a simple test setup are described.

  • This paper presents the characteristics analysis of electromagnetic pump using linear induction motors. The electromagnetic pump is designed to transfer the molten metals by the electromagnetic force of linear induction motors. The characteristics f a linear induction motor are analysed by the equivalent circuit method considering the end effects. For the verification of the analysis method, the locked test and load test with molten tin were made. The test results of locked test were compared with the simulations, and the velocity of the load test with molten zinc showed 0.24[m/x] with air gap 30[gap] which is sufficient for transferring molten tin.

  • For the use of Indirect-conversion CMOS (complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor) detectors for digital x-ray radiography and their better designs, we have theoretically evaluated the spatial-frequency-dependent detective quantum efficiency (DQE) using the cascaded linear-systems transfer theory. In order to validate the developed model, the DQE was experimentally determined by the measured modulation-transfer function (MTF) and noise-power spectrum, and the estimated incident x-ray fluence under the mammography beam quality of W/Al. From the comparison between the theoretical and experimental DQEs, the overall tendencies were well agreed. Based on the developed model, we have investigated the DQEs values with respect to various design parameters of the CMOS x-ray detector such as phosphor quantum efficiency, Swank noise, photodiode quantum efficiency and the MTF of various scintillator screens. This theoretical approach is very useful tool for the understanding of the developed imaging systems as well as helpful for the better design or optimization for new development.

  • Transfer of lanthanide ions across the liquid/liquid interface facilitated by ionopore ETH4120 has been studied by using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronopotentiometry with cyclic linear current-scanning (CPCLCS) under the condition where the concentration of ETH4120 in nitrobenzene was much smaller than the concentration of lanthanide ions in aqueous solution. One cathodic current peak (transfer from aqueous to nitrobenzene phase) and two anodic current waves (transfer from nitrobenzene to aqueous phase) were observed. The cathodic wave was due to the formation of 1:1 (metal:ligand) complex and two anodic waves showed successive formation of 1:2 and 1:3 complexes in nitrobenzene solution. But there was no cathodic wave corresponding to two anodic waves. The ion transfer mechanism has also been discussed.

  • In this paper, a new method for predicting the 1 dB gain compression point of cascaded N amplifiers is proposed. With the proposed method, the transfer function of each amplifier is derived from scalar data available from the manufacturers data sheet and all transfer functions are producted with scalar in order to also derive the overall transfer function of the subsystem under the assumption that the input and output port of each amplifier are matched. Therefore, the 1 dB gain compression point of the subsystem can be predicted or estimated, reversely, utilizing the overall transfer function obtained with the proposed method. The proposed method can be used irrespective of the number of scalar data but, in this paper, it is analyzed only with two scalar data (linear power gain and 1 dB gain compression point) and three scalar data(linear power gain, 1 dB and 0.5 dB gain compression points). With two sample amplifiers operated in Ku-band, the predicted results by the proposed and previous method, respectively, and the experimental results are together presented in order to confirm its utility.
