  • The robust control problem of the linear systems with uncertainty is classified as the robust stability problem guaranteeing the stability and the robust performance problem guaranteeing the disired performance. In this paper, we considered the robust performance analysis problem, which find the upper buund of the quadratic performance of the uncertain linear system, and the robust guaranteed performance controller design problem which design a controller guaranteeing the desired quadratic performance. At first, we treated the analysis problem and presented the two results; one is dependent on the performance of the nominal system and another is independent on this. And we treated the design method guaranteeing the desired performance for the uncertain linear systems, Finally, we show the usefulness of our results by numerical examples.

  • This paper deals with the stability of discrete time linear systems with time varying delays in state. In this paper, the magnitude of time-varying delays is assumed to be upper-bouded. The stability of discrete time linear systems with time-varying delays in state is related with the stability of discrete time linear systems with constant time delay in state. To show this, a new Lyapunov function is proposed. Using this Lyapunov function, a sufficient condition for the asymptotic stability is derived.

  • A two-step procedure for the application of non linear constrained programming to the limit analysis of rigid brick-block systems with no-tension and frictional interface is implemented and applied to various masonry structures. In the first step, a linear problem of programming, obtained by applying the upper bound theorem of limit analysis to systems of blocks interacting through no-tension and dilatant interfaces, is solved. The solution of this linear program is then employed as initial guess for a non linear and non convex problem of programming, obtained applying both the 'mechanism' and the 'equilibrium' approaches to the same block system with no-tension and frictional interfaces. The optimiser used is based on the sequential quadratic programming. The gradients of the constraints required are provided directly in symbolic form. In this way the program easily converges to the optimal solution even for systems with many degrees of freedom. Various numerical analyses showed that the procedure allows a reliable investigation of the ultimate behaviour of jointed structures, such as stone masonry structures, under statical load conditions.

  • Tuned mass dampers (TMDs) have been frequently proposed to mitigate the detrimental effects of dynamic loadings in structural systems. The effectiveness of this protection strategy has been demonstrated for wind-induced vibrations and, to some extent, for seismic loadings. Within this framework, recent numerical studies have shown that beneficial effects can be achieved by placing a linear TMD on the roof of linear elastic structural systems subjected to pulse-like ground motions. Motivated by these positive outcomes, closed-form design formulations have been also proposed to optimize the device's parameters. For structural systems that undergo a near-fault pulse-like ground motion, however, it is unlikely that their dynamic response be linear elastic. Hence, it is very important to understand whether such strategy is effective for inelastic structural systems. In order to provide new useful insights about this issue, the paper presents statistical results obtained from a numerical study conducted for three shear-type hysteretic (softening-type) systems having 4, 8 and 16 stories equipped with a linear elastic TMD. The effectiveness of two design procedures is discussed by examining the performances of the protected systems subjected to 124 natural pulse-like earthquakes.

  • In this paper, we present an output feedback $H^\infty$controller design method and derive the sufficient condition of the bounded real lemma for linear systems with multiple delays in states. For state delayed systems, sufficient conditions for the existence $\kappa$-th order $H^\infty$controllers are given in terms of three linear matrix inequalities(LMIs). Furthermore, we show how to construct such controllers from the positive definite solutions of their LMIs and given an example to illustrate the validitiy of the proosed design procedure.

  • This article provides the connection between feedback stabilization and interpolation conditions for n-D linear systems (n > 1). In addition to internal stability, if one demands performance as a design goal, then there results an n-D matrix Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem. Application of recent work on Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation on the polydisk yields a solution of the problem for the 2-D case. The same analysis applies in the n-D case (n > 2), but leads to solutions which are contractive in a norm (the "Schur-Agler norm") somewhat stronger than the $H^{\infty}$ norm. This is an analogous version of the connection between the standard $H^{\infty}$ control problem and an interpolation problem of Nevanlinna-Pick type in the classical 1-D linear time-invariant systems.

  • Marine reduction gears are usually used to increase the propulsion efficiency of propellers for ships powered by medium and small sized high speed diesel engines. Most of shaft systems adopt flexible couplings to absorb the transmitted vibratory torque from the engines to the reduction gears and to prevent the chattering phenomenon of reduction gears. However some elastic couplings show non-linear characteristics due to the variable torque transmitted from the main engines and the change of ambient temperature. In this study dynamic characteristics of flexible couplings sare investigated and their effects upon various vibratory conditions of propulsion systems are clarified. A calculation program of torsional vibration for the propulsion systems are clarified. A calculation program of Results of the program developed are compared with ones of the existing linear method and propulsion systems with the elastic couplings the transfer matrix method is adopted which is found to give satisfied results.

  • This paper proposes a robust tracking control for constrained uncertain linear systems by combining a disturbance observer (DOB) and linear matrix inequality (LMI) based state feedback control. To this end, the state feedback control is designed for the nominal system and then a DOB based feed-forward control is added to reject uncertainties. In doing so, the DOB and state feedback controller are joined in a way that the combined control satisfies the input constraints and closed loop stability is guaranteed. Simulation results are provided to show that the proposed control scheme successfully stabilizes uncertain systems.

  • An analytical framework for fuzzy modeling and control of nonlinear systems using a set of linear models is presented. Fuzzy clustering is applied on the aerodynamic coefficients of a missile to obtain an optimal number of rules in a Tagaki-Sugeno fuzzy rule-set. Next, the obtained membership functions and rule-sets are applied to a set of linear optimal controllers towards extraction of a global controller. Reported simulations demonstrate the performance, stability, and robustness of the controller.

  • A fundamental problem is to construct linear systems with given transfer functions. This problem has a well known solution for unitary linear systems whose state spaces and coefficient spaces are Hilbert spaces. The solution is due independently to B. Sz.-Nagy and C. Foias [15] and to L. de Branges and J. Ball and N. Cohen [4]. Such a linear system is essentially uniquely determined by its transfer function. The de Branges-Rovnyak construction makes use of the theory of square summable power series with coefficients in a Hilbert space. The construction also applies when the coefficient space is a Krein space [7].
