  • This paper proposes the new method to calculate the static thrust and normal force of a hybrid type double-sided linear pulse motor by the coenergy which considered the magnetic nonlinealities. In the process of the computation, the nonlinear characteristics of the magnetic material were interpolated by the cubic spline method. And, to investigate the characteristics of the hybrid type DLPM, the static thrust and the normal force is shown as a function of displacement, input current and air airgap length. Also the simulation values are compared with the experimental ones obtained from a hybrid type DLPM.

  • For the shape design of electromagnetic devices using the FEM, the choice of design parameters influence to the success of the optimization process. If the design parameter distribution has a one to one corespondence with finite element model, we can encounter not only serious accuracy problem but also obtain a zigzag shape along the interface. The nodes between those design parameters can be parameterized by interpolating using one among many interpolation methods. The conventional parameterization of design parameters has a limit of application for shape, because design parameters and movable nodes are linearly intepolated. In this paper, using the B-spline curve that use to present any interfaces in computer graphics, the curvilinear parameterization between design parameters and node points is compared with the linear parameterization.

  • A study on the vibration and buckling analyses of laminated composite plates is described in this paper. In order to carry out the analyses of laminated composite plates, a NURBS-based isogeometric general plate element based on Reissner-Mindlin (RM) theory is developed. The non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS) is used to represent the geometry of plate and the unknown displacement field and therefore, all terms required in this element formulation are consistently derived by using NURBS basis function. Numerical examples are conducted to investigate the accuracy and reliability of the present plate element. From numerical results, the present plate element can produce the isogeometric solutions with sufficient accuracy. Finally, the present isogeometric solutions are provided as future reference solutions.

  • This paper proposes a new method to compute the static thrust of a hybrid-type LPM by the coenergy method, which can be applied to a nonlinear programming of the optimization techniques for the optimal design. In the process of the computation, the magnetic nonlinearities of the permanent magnet, the primary and the secondary core are interpolated by the cubic spline method. And then, the equivalent magnetic circuit including the airgap reluctance which is a function of the displacement is modelled by the permeance method. The static thrust which is a derivative of the coenergy is computed by the Newton Raphson method at each displacement. To verify this proposed method, the results of the compjutation are compaction with those of the experiment obtained from the DLPM with 2 phase and 4 poles.

  • We have evaluated the performances of the following six interpolation schemes used for window deformation in particle image velocimetry (PIV): the linear, quadratic, B-spline, cubic, sinc, Lagrange interpolations. Artificially generated images comprised of particles of diameter in a range $1.1{\leq}d_p\leq10.0$ pixel were investigated. Three particle diameters were selected for detailed evaluation: $d_p$=2.2, 3.3, 4.4 pixel with a constant particle concentration 0.02 $particle/pixel^2$. Two flow patterns were considered: uniform and shear flows. The mean and random errors, and the computation times of the interpolation schemes were determined and compared.

  • Depending on geographical features and error sources in the survey field, inaccurate data is inevitable in GPS kinematic survey for positioning with feature codes. In this study, the trimmed mean and the first order differential equation are used to develop an inaccurate positioning data detection algorithm, and a cubic spline curve and a linear polynomial are used to interpolate the inaccurate data. Based on interpolated data, a digital map for 30 km range of rural highway is produced and a corresponding GIS coverage map is obtained by analyzing and solving the problem associated with the map.

  • This paper proposes a method for extracting tissue cells from an organism image by an electron microscope and getting the whole cell number and the area from the cell. In general, the difference between the cell color and the background is used to extract tissue cell. However, there may be a problem when overlapped cells are seen as a single cell. To solve the problem, we split them by using cell size and curvature. This method has a 99% accuracy rate. To measure the cell area, we compute two areas, the inside and boundary of the cell. The inside is simply calculated by the number of pixels. The cell boundary is obtained by applying super sampling, linear interpolation, and cubic spline interpolation. It improves the error rate, 18%, 19%, and 120% respectively, in comparison to the counting method that counts a pixel area as 1.

  • The finite element method (FEM) has been used for various fields like mathematics and engineering. However, the FEM has a difficulty in describing the geometric shape exactly due to its property of piecewise linear discretization. Recently, however, a so-called isogeometric analysis method that uses the non-uniform rational B-spline(NURBS) basis function has been developed. The NURBS can be used to describe the geometry exactly and play a role of basis functions for the response analysis. Nevertheless, constructing the NURBS basis functions in analysis is as costly as a meshing process in the FEM. Since the isogeometric method shares geometric data with CAD, it is possible to intactly import the model data from commercial CAD tools. In this paper, we use the Rhinoceros 3D software to create CAD models and export in the form of STEP file. The information of knot vectors and control points in the NURBS is utilized in the isogeometric analysis. Through some numerical examples, the accuracy of isogeometric method is compared with that of FEM. Also, the efficiency of the isogeometric method that includes the CAD and CAE in a unified framework is verified.

  • Location determination of mobile user via RSSI approach has received ample attention from researchers lately. However, it remains a challenging issue due to the complexities of RSSI signal propagation characteristics, which are easily exacerbated by the mobility of user. Hence, a segmentation-based linear spline interpolation method is proposed to cater for the dynamic fluctuation pattern of radio signal in complex environment. This optimization algorithm is proposed in addition to the current radiolocation's (CC2431, Chipcon, Norway) algorithm, which runs on IEEE802.15.4 standard. The enhancement algorithm involves four phases. First phase consists of calibration model in which RSSI values at different static locations are collected and processed to obtain the mean and standard deviation value for the predefined distance. RSSI smoothing algorithm is proposed to minimize the dynamic fluctuation of radio signal received from each reference node when the user is moving. Distances are computed using the segmentation formula obtain in the first phase. In situation where RSSI value falls in more than one segment, the ambiguity of distance is solved by probability approach. The distance probability distribution function(pdf) for each distances are computed and distance with the highest pdf at a particular RSSI is the estimated distance. Finally, with the distances obtained from each reference node, an iterative trilateration algorithm is used for position estimation. Experiment results obtained position the proposed algorithm as a viable alternative for location tracking.

  • Seismic response of two dimensional liquid tanks is numerically simulated using fully nonlinear velocity potential theory. Galerkin-weighted-residual based finite element method is used for solving the governing Laplace equation with fully nonlinear free surface boundary conditions and also for velocity recovery. Based on mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian (MEL) method, fourth order explicit Runge-Kutta scheme is used for time integration of free surface boundary conditions. A cubic-spline fitted regridding technique is used at every time step to eliminate possible numerical instabilities on account of Lagrangian node induced mesh distortion. An artificial surface damping term is used which mimics the viscosity induced damping and brings in numerical stability. Four earthquake motions have been suitably selected to study the effect of frequency content on the dynamic response of tank-liquid system. The nonlinear seismic response vis-a-vis linear response of rectangular liquid tank has been studied. The impulsive and convective components of hydrodynamic forces, e.g., base shear, overturning base moment and pressure distribution on tank-wall are quantified. It is observed that the convective response of tank-liquid system is very much sensitive to the frequency content of the ground motion. Such sensitivity is more pronounced in shallow tanks.
