In this study, we have investigated the photoinduced birefringence of Ag plarized-photodoping in double-layer of Ag doped chalcognide thin films and dependence of polarization states in chalcogenide thin films. Also, we have investigated the polarization dependence of photoinduced birefringence and the anisotropy of absorption in an amorphous As$\sub$40/Ge$\sub$10/Se$\sub$15/S$\sub$35/ chalcogenide thin films using two 632.8nm He-Ne lasers, which have a smaller energy than the optical energy gap (E$\sub$OP/) of the film, i.e., an exposure of sub-bandgap light (hν$\sub$op/). The photoinduced phenomena of Ag polarized-photodooping increasing the linear dichroism(d), about 84% and birefringence(Δn), about 23%. It will offer lots of information for the photodoping mechanism and analysis of chalcogenide thin films.

Objectives: Periapical lesions, including periapical cyst (PC), periapical granuloma (PG), and periapical abscess (PA), are frequently affected by chemical/physical damage during root canal treatment or severe bacterial infection, and thus, the differential diagnosis of periapical lesions may be difficult due to the presence of severe inflammatory reaction. The aim of this study was to make differential diagnosis among PC, PG, and PA under polarizing microscope. Materials and Methods: The collagen birefringence patterns of 319 cases of PC (n = 122), PG (n = 158), and PA (n = 39) obtained using a polarizing microscope were compared. In addition, 6 cases of periodontal fibroma (PF) were used as positive controls. Results: Collagen birefringence was condensed with a thick, linear band-like pattern in PC, but was short and irregularly scattered in PG, and scarce or absent in PA. PF showed intense collagen birefringence with a short, palisading pattern but no continuous band-like pattern. The linear band-like birefringence in PC was ascribed to pre-existing expansile tensile stress of the cyst wall. Conclusions: In this study all PCs (n = 122) were distinguishable from PGs and PAs by their characteristic birefringence, despite the absence of lining epithelium (n = 20). Therefore, the authors suggest that the presence of linear band-like collagen birefringence of the cyst wall aids the diagnostic differentiation of PC from PG and PA.
Precision injection molding process is of great importance since precision optical products such as CD, DVD and various lens are manufactured by those process. In such products, birefringence affects the optical performance while residual stress that determines the geometric precision level. Therefore, it is needed to study residual stress and birefringence that affect deformation and optical quality, respectively in precision optical product. In the present study, we tried to predict residual stress, final shrinkage and birefringence in injection molded parts in a systematic way, and compared numerical results with the corresponding experimental data. Residual stress and birefringence can be divided into two parts, namely flow induced and thermally induced portions. Flow induced birefringence is dominant during the flow, whereas thermally induced stress is much higher than flow induced one when amorphous polymer undergoes rapid cooling across the glass transition region. A numerical system that is able to predict birefringence, residual stress and final shrinkage in injection molding process has been developed using hybrid finite element-difference method for a general three dimensional thin part geometry. The present modeling attempts to integrate the analysis of the entire process consistently by assuming polymeric materials as nonlinear viscoelastic fluids above a no-flow temperature and as linear viscoelastic solids below the no-flow temperature, while calculating residual stress, shrinkage and birefringence accordingly. Thus, for flow induced ones, the Leonov model and stress-optical law are adopted, while the linear viscoelastic model, photoviscoelastic model and free volume theory taking into account the density relaxation phenomena are employed to predict thermally induced ones. Special cares are taken of the modeling of the lateral boundary condition which can consider product geometry, histories of pressure and residual stress. Deformations at and after ejection have been considered using thin shell viscoelastic finite element method. There were good correspondences between numerical results and experimental data if final shrinkage, residual stress and birefringence were compared.
An analysis using FEM simulation was conducted to predict residual stresses and birefringence in simple compressed cylindrical glass as a preliminary part of the optimum design determination of optical lenses. The FEM simulation with the Maxwell viscoelastic constitutive model was used to predict thermal induced residual stresses and birefringence during the compression test considering stress relaxation. Also the linear photoelastic theory was introduced to calculate birefringence from the residual stress state. The error of simulation results between experimental results in the birefringence value at the center of glass specimen is $4.2\%$, and the error in the maximum radius of deformed glass specimen is $1.2\%$. The simulation results were in good agreement with deformation and birefringence distribution in the existing experimental result.
We have theoretically analyzed and experimentally observed the effects of wavelength dependent birefringence inside a laser cavity on the output characteristics of fiber lasers with a figure eight geometry. The spectral and polarization characteristics of fiber lasers are found to be very susceptible to the resultant birefringence composed of the intrinsically existing wavelength dependent birefringence and the externally induced birefringences inside the fiber. For the variation of twist-induced birefringence inside the nonlinear amplifying loop mirror, the laser output power and center wave-length of continuous wave lasers change periodically, but the polarization characteristics remains nearly unchanged. The changes of the birefringence inside the linear loop has little effect on the spectral characteristics but changes the polarization properties such as the polarization direction.

In this paper, a theoretical study has been made to reduce the residual stress and birefringence in the injection-molded parts. An optimization program has been used to minimize the residual stresses and birefringence calculated from a simulation program. The thermally induced stress has been calculated using a linear viscoelasticity model. The flow stress and birefringence has been calculated using the Leonov's viscoelasticity model. This has been applied to the injection molding of a circular disc and a plate. the optimization has been done either by changing process variables while maintaining the mold temperature constant or by varying the mold-wall temperature with time. This study shows the significant reduction in residual stress and birefringence is possible through the optimization of processing conditions.

Simulations of the thermally-induced residual stresses and birefringence in freely quenched plates of polycarbonate were performed by using the linear viscoelastic and photoviscoelastic constitutive equations for the mechanical and optical properties, respectively, and the first order rate equation for volume relaxation. The predictions for the birefringence showed good agreement with experimental measurements. However, for initial temperature close to the glass transition temperature, some differences existed around the surface layer. Based on the simulation, the influences of various cooling conditions on the residual stress and birefringence in plates were investigated. The residual stress and birefringence increased with increasing initial temperature, decreasing coolant temperature and increasing heat transfer coefficient of coolants.
