This paper presents an analytical method to Investigate the stability of a hydrodynamic journal bearing with rotating herringbone grooves. The dynamic coefficients of the hydrodynamic Journal bearing are calculated using the FEM and the perturbation method. The linear equations of motion can be represented as a parametrically excited system because the dynamic coefficients have time-varying components due to the rotating grooves, even in the steady state. Their solution can be assumed as a Fourier series expansion so that the equations of motion can be rewritten as simultaneous algebraic equations with respect to the Fourier coefficients. Then, stability can be determined by solving Hill's infinite determinant of these algebraic equations. The validity of this research is proved by the comparison of the stability chart with the time response of the whirl radius obtained from the equations of motion. This research shows that the instability of the hydrodynamic journal bearing with rotating herringbone grooves increases with increasing eccentricity and with decreasing groove number, which play the major roles in increasing the average and variation of stiffness coefficients, respectively. It also shows that a high rotational speed is another source of instability by increasing the stiffness coefficients without changing the damping coefficients.

This paper deals with the design of robust DSMC (Discrete-Time Sliding Mode Control) scheme in order to overcome system uncertainty in steering system with mechanically joined structure. The proposed control scheme is one of robust control schemes based on system dynamics. Therefore, system dynamics required is not obtained from physical law but SCM (Signal Compression Method) through experiment in order to avoid complicate mathematical development and save time. However, SCM has a shortcoming that is the limitation of with $2^{nd}$ order linear model which does not include the dynamic of high-frequency band. Thus, considering system uncertainty, DSMC is designed. In addition, to reduce the chattering problem of DSMC, DSMC is derived from the reaching law and the Lyapunov stability condition. It is found that the proposed control scheme has robustness in spite of the perturbation of system uncertainty through computer simulation.

The propellant tank, which is a space launch vehicle structure, must have structural integrity as various static and dynamic loads are applied during ground transportation, launch standby, take-off and flight processes. Because of these characteristics, the propellant tank cylinder, the structural object of this study, has a thin thickness, so buckling due to compressive load is considered important in the cylinder design. However, the existing buckling design standards such as NASA and Europe are fairly conservative and do not reflect the latest design and manufacturing technologies. In this study, nonlinear buckling analysis is performed using various analysis models that reflect initial defects, and a method for establishing new buckling design standards for cylinder structures is presented. In conclusion, it was confirmed that an effective lightweight design of the cylinder structure for common bulkhead propulsion tank could be realized.
The low leakage leading pattern has features as the placement of some fresh fuel assemblies in the core interior to reduce the neutron fluence on the pressure vessel and to enhance the neutron economics. But as fresh fuel assemblies are loaded in the core interior, the local power tends to exceed safety limit due to the high reactivity of the fresh assemblies. Therefore, a large number of burnable poisons must be utilized in a low leakage scheme to suppress the high assembly power as well as the excess reactivity. In this study the effects of burnable poisons are treated as a perturbation on the power distribution, and the 'Power Sensitivity Coefficient' concept is adopted. An application study is performed for cycle 1 of the Korea Nuclear Unit-7 (KNU-7) to justify the usefulness of the reverse depletion method coupled with the above concept. To obtain the optimal burnable poision distribution at the given burnup step, the linear programming technique is adopted. The result shows maximum 4.5% error in the amount of burnable poisons between the calculated and the reference values. It is concluded that the design methodology which consists of the reverse depletion, the power sensitivity coefficient concept, and the linear programming technique can be used to find the optimal turnable poison distribution.

Most dynamic systems have various random properties m excitation and system parameters. In this paper, a procedure for structural response and reliability analysis is proposed for the linear dynamic system with random properties in both excitation and system parameters. The system parameter and response with random properties are modeled by the perturbation technique, and then the response analysis is formulated by probabilistic and vibration theories. Probabilistic FEM is also used for the calculation of mean response which is difficult by the proposed response model. The first passage analysis by the integral equation method is used to analyze the probability of failure. The integral equation method results in the first passage probability in terms of crossing rates and first passage probability densities. In this study it is assumed that excitations, system parameters and responses are Gaussian. As an application example, the probabilities of failure at transient state are calculated for a sdof system with random mass and spring constant subjected to stationary white-noise excitation and the results are compared to those of numerical simulation.

A variational formulation for plane elasticity problems is derived based on an isogeometric approach. The isogeometric analysis is an emerging methodology such that the basis functions in analysis domain arc generated directly from NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines) geometry. Thus. the solution space can be represented in terms of the same functions to represent the geometry. The coefficients of basis functions or the control variables play the role of degrees-of-freedom. Furthermore, due to h-. p-, and k-refinement schemes, the high order geometric features can be described exactly and easily without tedious re-meshing process. The isogeometric sensitivity analysis method enables us to analyze arbitrarily shaped structures without re-meshing. Also, it provides a precise construction method of finite element model to exactly represent geometry using B-spline base functions in CAD geometric modeling. To obtain precise shape sensitivity, the normal and curvature of boundary should be taken into account in the shape sensitivity expressions. However, in conventional finite element methods, the normal information is inaccurate and the curvature is generally missing due to the use of linear interpolation functions. A continuum-based adjoint sensitivity analysis method using the isogeometric approach is derived for the plane elasticity problems. The conventional shape optimization using the finite element method has some difficulties in the parameterization of boundary. In isogeometric analysis, however, the geometric properties arc already embedded in the B-spline shape functions and control points. The perturbation of control points in isogeometric analysis automatically results in shape changes. Using the conventional finite clement method, the inter-element continuity of the design space is not guaranteed so that the normal vector and curvature arc not accurate enough. On tile other hand, in isogeometric analysis, these values arc continuous over the whole design space so that accurate shape sensitivity can be obtained. Through numerical examples, the developed isogeometric sensitivity analysis method is verified to show excellent agreement with finite difference sensitivity.
The objective of this paper is to present an analytical solution in deep water waves and verify the validity of the theory (Shin, 2015). Hence this is a follow-up to Shin (2015). Instead of a variational approach, another approach was considered for a more accurate assessment in this study. The products of two coefficients were not neglected in this study. The two wave profiles from the KFSBC and DFSBC were evaluated at N discrete points on the free-surface, and the combination coefficients were determined for when the two curves pass the discrete points. Thus, the solution satisfies the differential equation (DE), bottom boundary condition (BBC), and the kinematic free surface boundary condition (KFSBC) exactly. The error in the dynamic free surface boundary condition (DFSBC) is less than 0.003%. The wave theory was simplified based on the assumption tanh $D{\approx}1$ in this paper. Unlike the perturbation method, the results are possible for steep waves and can be calculated without iteration. The result is very simple compared to the 5th Stokes' theory. Stokes' breaking-wave criterion has been checked in this study.
Recent research in animal behavior has shown that gradient information plays an important role in finding food and home. It is also important in optimization of performance because it indicates how the inputs should be adjusted for maximization/minimization of a performance index. We introduce perturbation as an additional input to obtain gradient information. Unlike the typical approach of calculating the gradient from the derivative, the proposed processing is very robust to noise since it is performed as a summation. Experimental results prove the validity of the process of spatial gradient acquisition. Quantitative indices for measuring the effect of the amplitude and the frequency are developed based on linear regression analysis. Drones are very useful for environmental monitoring and an autonomous path planning is required for unstructured environment. Guiding the drone for finding the origin of the interested physical property is done by estimating the gradient of the sensed value and generating the drone trajectories in the direction which maximizes the sensed value. Simulation results show that the proposed method can be successfully applied to identify the source of the physical quantity of interest by utilizing it for path planning of an autonomous drone in 3D environment.

This research investigates the stability analysis for the rotating and the stationary grooved journal bearing. The dynamic coefficients of the journal bearing are calculated by using FEM and the perturbation method. When journal bearing is in whirling motion, the dynamic coefficients have time-varying components as a sine wave due to the reaction force of oil film toward the center of journal even in the steady state. The solutions for the equations of motion can be assumed as the Fourier series expansion. The equations of motion can be rewritten as the linear algebraic equations with respect to the Fourier coefficients. Then, stability of the grooved journal bearing can be calculated by Hill's infinite determinant. The periodic function of dynamic coefficients is derived using Fourier Fast Transform(FFT).The stability of journal bearing is determined as rotating speed increases and the stability of rotating grooved journal bearing is compared and discussed with the stability of stationary grooved journal bearing.
