  • This paper designs observers for matrix second-order linear systems on the basis of generalized eigenstructure assignment via unified parametric approach. It is shown that the problem is closely related with a type of so-called generalized matrix second-order Sylvester matrix equations. Through establishing two general parametric solutions to this type of matrix equations, two unified complete parametric methods for the proposed observer design problem are presented. Both methods give simple complete parametric expressions for the observer gain matrices. The first one mainly depends on a series of singular value decompositions, and is thus numerically simple and reliable; the second one utilizes the right factorization of the system, and allows eigenvalues of the error system to be set undetermined and sought via certain optimization procedures. A spring-mass system is utilized to show the effect of the proposed approaches.

  • In this paper, we present an observer-based robust controller which achieves not only robust stability but also an performance robustness for linear uncertain discrete-time systems. The performance robustness means that comparing the transient behavior of the uncertain system with a desired one generated by the nominal system, the deterioration of control performance (i.e. the error between the real response and the desired one) is suppressed without excessive control input. The control law consists of a state feedback law for the nominal system and a compensation input given by a feedback form of an estimated error signal. In this paper, we show that conditions for the existence of the observer-based controller are given in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Finally, a numerical example is given to illustrate the proposed technique.

  • This paper presents the internal oil leakage detection problem for a hydraulic double-rod cylinder. We represent the dynamics of the hydraulic cylinder as a convex combination of linear equations. To detect oil leakage, we propose a model-based fault detection observer design scheme. The observer is designed to be robust against disturbance. Sufficient design conditions are derived in the form of linear matrix inequalities. A numerical example is provided to verify the proposed techniques.

  • This study deals with the dynamic characteristics analysis of Linear Induction Motor (LIM) using finite element method in which the moving mesh technique is considered. The focus of this paper is to show the appropriate of on-line observer system for position sensorless control of a LIM under the phase asymmetry, saturation and iron loss. Comparisons are given with angle of the observer and that of proposed FEA method of linear induction motor, respectively. The position sensorless control system is realized, and the effective of the observer system is verified by experimental results.

  • A novel robust $H_{\infty}$ switching tracking control design method with disturbance observer is proposed for the near space interceptor (NSI) with aerodynamic fins and reaction jets. Initially, the flight envelop of the NSI is divided into small subregions, and a slow-fast loop polytopic linear parameter varying (LPV) model is proposed, to approximate the nonlinear dynamic of the NSI, based on the Jacobian linearization and Tensor-Product (T-P) model transformation approach. A disturbance observer is then constructed, to estimate the modeled disturbance. Subsequently, based on the descriptor system method, a robust switching controller is developed, to ensure that the closed-loop descriptor system is stable with a desired $H_{\infty}$ disturbance attenuation level. Furthermore, the outcome of the proposed switching tracking control problem is formulated as a set of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Finally, simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design method.

  • This paper proposes the robust observer design for nonlinear systems with delayed output and external disturbance. It is shown that by considering a nonlinear term of error dynamics as an additional state variable, the nonlinear error dynamics with time delay can be transformed into the linear one with time delay. Sufficient conditions for existence of a robust observer are characterized by linear matrix inequalities. Finally, an illustrative example is given in order to show the effectiveness of our design method.

  • A battery management system requires accurate information on the battery state of charge (SOC) to achieve efficient energy management of electric vehicle and renewable energy systems. Although correct SOC estimation is difficult because of the changes in the electrical characteristics of the battery attributed to ambient temperature, service life, and operating point, various methods for accurate SOC estimation have been reported. On the basis of piecewise linear (PWL) modeling technique, this paper proposes a simple SOC observer for lithium-polymer batteries. For performance evaluation, the SOC estimated by the PWL SOC observer, the SOC measured by the battery-discharging experiment and the SOC estimated by the extended Kalman filter (EKF) estimator were compared through a PSIM simulation study.

  • A class of new observers in descriptor linear systems, proportional-derivative(PD) observers, are proposed. A parametric design approach for such observers is proposed based on a complete parametric solution to the generalized Sylvester matrix equation. The approach provides complete parameterizations for all the observer gains, gives the parametric expression for the corresponding left eigenvector matrix of the observer system matrix, realizes elimination of impulsive behaviors, and guarantees the regularity of the observer system.

  • This Paper presents a positioning control method of the LBLDCM(Linear Brushless DC Motor) under friction. The friction may cause steady state position error. So it is necessary to consider friction effect for precision positioning control. The proposed control method uses disturbance observer algorithm and friction compensation. The experimental results of the proposed control method based on the disturbance observer are presented to show its effectiveness.

  • A reduced order observer with finite time convergence characteristics is proposed for linear time invariant systems. The proposed finite time reduced order observer(FTROO) is a dual observer scheme in which two reduced order Luenberger observers with asymptotic convergence characteristics and a finite time delay element are employed. The FTROO can be constructed so as to converge in the designer specified finite time independent of the eigenvalues of the reduced order observers. A numerical example is given to show the finite-time convergence characteristics of the proposed FTROO.
