  • The past three decades have witnessed a tremendous growth is the literature on location proble. A mathematical formulation of uncapacitated plant location problem and the k-median as an integer program has proven very fruitful in the derivation of solution methods. Most of the successful algorithms for the problem are based on so-called "strong" linear programming relaxation. This is due to the fact that the strong linear programming relaxation provides a tight lower bound. In this paper we investigate the phenomenon with a structural analysis of the problem.e problem.

  • Deal-or-No-Deal game is a famous TV show program of NBC, USA, which is composed of 10 stages at most. At each stage from the first and the ninth, a banker suggests a deal price to participants. In this paper, we intend to reveal the banker's deal price model using a constrained linear model and quadratic program. As results, we provide a linear model in relation to the deal price at each stage and then show using simulation data that the deal price is equal to the nearest integer of the value to be obtained by the provided linear model.

  • This paper deals with a task assignment problem of multiple UAVs performing multiple tasks on multiple targets. The task assignment problem of multiple UAVs is a kind of combinatorial optimization problems such as traveling salesman problem or vehicle routing problem, and it has NP-hard computational complexity. Therefore, computation time increases as the size of considered problem increases. To solve the problem efficiently, approximation methods or heuristic methods are widely used. In this study, the problem is formulated as a mixed integer linear program, and is solved by a mixed integer linear programming and a genetic algorithm, respectively. Numerical simulations for the environment of the multiple targets, multiple tasks, and obstacles were performed to analyze the optimality and efficiency of each method.

  • This paper presents a model for designing cellular manufacturing systems (CMS) by integrating system cost, machine reliability, and preventive maintenance (PM) planning. In a CMS, a part is processed using alternative process routes, each consisting of a sequence of visits to machines. Thus, a level of 'system reliability' is associated with the machines along the process route assigned to a part type. Assuming machine reliabilities to follow the Weibull distribution, the model assigns the machines to cells, and selects, for each part type, a process route which maximizes the overall system reliability and minimizes the total costs of manufacturing operations, machine underutilization, and inter-cell material handling. The model also incorporates a reliability based PM plan and an algorithm to implement the plan. The algorithm determines effective PM intervals for the CMS machines based on a group maintenance policy and thus minimizes the maintenance costs subject to acceptable machine reliability thresholds. The model is a large mixed integer linear program, and is solved using LINGO. The results point out that integrating PM in the CMS design improves the overall system reliability markedly, and reduces the total costs significantly.

  • Processing mail objects in a mail processing center involves several steps and operations, in particular dispatching as well as sorting by destination. The purpose of this paper is to present a model for the part-time worker staffing and allocation problem as it arises at the parcel sorting area in a mail processing center. The problem is formulated as a mixed integer linear program model to minimize the variable part-time workforce related cost. Hot only the characteristics of the sorting operations but also the dispatching requirements of the vehicles are reflected into the model. Six example problems with three different daily amounts of arriving mail are solved with LINGO to demonstrate the effectiveness of the 7-level induction option for the parcel sorting machine over the current 3-level one. The results indicate that measurable savings can be achieved by departing from current practice.

Abstract This paper presents an efficient algorithm for reducing glitches caused by spurious transitions in CMOS logic circuits. The proposed algorithm reduces glitches by achieving path balancing through gate sizing and buffer insertion. The gate sizing technique reduces not only glitches but also effective capacitance in the circuit. In the proposed algorithm, the buffers are inserted between the gates where power reduction achieved by glitch reduction is larger than the additional power consumed by the inserted buffers. To determine the location of buffer insertion, ILP (Integer Linear Program) has been employed in the proposed system. The proposed algorithm has been tested on LGSynth91 benchmark circuits. Experimental results show an average of 30.4% power reduction.

  • This paper proposes a Bi-level Genetic Algorithm for the Fixed Charge Transportation Problem with Non-linear Unit Cost. The problem has the property of mixed integer program with non-linear objective function and linear constraints. The bi-level procedure consists of the upper-GA and the lower-GA. While the upper-GA optimize the connectivity between each supply and demand pair, the lower-GA optimize the amount of transportation between the pairs set to be connected by the upper-GA. In the upper-GA, the feasibility of the connectivity are verified, and if a connectivity is not feasible, it is modified so as to be feasible. In the lower-GA, a simple method is used to obtain a pivot feasible solution under the restriction of the connectivity determined by the upper-GA. The obtained pivot feasible solution is utilized to generate the initial generation of chromosomes. The computational experiment is performed on the selected problems with several non-linear objective functions. The performance of the proposed procedure is analyzed with the result of experiment.

  • In this paper, we propose an optimal ILP scheduling algorithm for multiprocessor design on LDFG(Linear Data-Flow Graph) that can be represented by homogeneous synchronous data-flow. The proposed computation in this paper does not contain data-dependent, all scheduling decisions for such algorithms can be taken at compile time, only fully static overlapped schedules are considered. It means that all linear have the same schedule and the same processor assignment. In this paper, the resource-constrained problem is addressed, for the LDFG optimization for multiprocessor design problem formulating ILP solution available to provide optimal solution. The results show that the scheduling method is able to find good quality schedules in reasonable time.

  • The advantages of the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) are high spectral efficiency, resiliency to RF interference, and lower multi-path distortion. To further utilize vast channel capacity of the multiuser OFDM, one has to find the efficient adaptive subchannel and bit allocation among users. In this paper, we compare the performance of the linear programming dual of the 0-1 integer programming formulation with the existing convex optimization approach for the optimal subchannel and bit allocation problem of the multiuser OFDM. Utilizing tight lower bound provided by the LP dual formulation, we develop a primal heurisitc algorithm based on the LP dual solution. The performance of the primal heuristic is compared with MAO, ESA heuristic solutions, and integer programming solution on MATLAB simulation on a system employing M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (MQAM) assuming a frequency-selective channel consisting of three independent Rayleigh multi-paths.
