  • Lineament density maps can be used for the quantitative evaluation of relationship between lineaments and groundwater occurrence. There are several kinds of lineament density maps including lineament length density, lineament cross-points density, and lineament counts density maps. This paper reports the usefulness of the representative elementary area (REA) concept for lineament analysis. This concept refers to the area size of the unit circle to calculate the lineament density factors distributed within the circle: length, counts and cross-points counts. The circle is a unit circle that calculates the sum of the lineament length, lineament counts and the number of cross-points within it. The REA is needed to obtain the best representative lineament density map prior to the analysis of relation between lineaments and groundwater well yield or other groundwater characteristics. A basic lineament map for the Yongsangang-Seomjingang watershed of Korea, drawn from aerial black-and-white photographs of 1/20, 000 scale was used for demonstrating the concept. From this study, the conclusions were as follows: (1) the REA concept can be efficiently applied to the lineament density analysis and mapping, (2) for whole Yongsangang-Seomjingang watershed which has 6, 502 lineaments with an average lineament length of 3.3 km, the lower limits of each REA used for drawing the three density maps were about 1.77 $\textrm{km}^2$ (r=750 m) for lineament length density, 7.07 $\textrm{km}^2$ (r=1, 500 m) for lineament counts density, and 4.91 $\textrm{km}^2$ (r=1, 250 m) for lineament cross-points density, respectively, (3) the lineament densities are inversely proportional to the size of REA, and the REA can be calculated with this inversely linear regression model, (4) if the average lineament density values for the whole study area are known, the most accurate density maps can be drawn using the REAs obtained from each linear regression model, and (5) but critical attention should be paid to draw lineament counts density and lineament cross-points density maps because.

  • Lineament maps are the important tools that may reveal points of groundwater recharge, flow and development. In particular, groundwater flows and yields in mountainous area, composed of crystalline rocks with many fractures, are governed mainly by the lineaments corresponding to fractures, joints and faults. Lineaments may give important information on the best distribution of wells and their management. For two districts; Pohang and Cheonan, the relationship between lineament and groundwater factors was analyzed. To compare groundwater productivity, storativity, and transmissivity of a well site along the distance to lineament, the distances to lineament was regrouped into five groups with an equal range, 100m, for the Pohang district and they are also divided into five groups with an equal range, 150m, for the Cheonan district. From the results of the Spearman Rank Correlation Analysis and Kendall Analysis for each group, the means of SPC and T of wells which are located near lineaments generally have large values. The means of SPC and T show a reverse linear relationship with a lineament distance, but the means of S shows a disperse distribution and no distinct linear relation. Result of the linear regression model between SPC and lineament length density shows that it will be effective to use the lineament length density map when finding the optimal well site on a regional scale.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationship between the location of the epicenter of a medium-sized earthquake(magnitude 4.8) that occurred on January 20, 2007 in the Odaesan area with lineament features using a shaded relief map(1/25,000 scale) and satellite images from LANDSAT-8 and KOMPSAT-2. Previous studies have analyzed lineament features in tectonic settings primarily by examining two-dimensional satellite images and shaded relief maps. These methods, however, limit the application of the visual interpretation of relief features long considered as the major component of lineament extraction. To overcome some existing limitations of two-dimensional images, this study examined three-dimensional images, produced from a Digital Elevation Model and drainage network map, for lineament extraction. This approach reduces mapping errors introduced by visual interpretation. In addition, spline interpolation was conducted to produce density maps of lineament frequency, intersection, and length required to estimate the density of lineament at the epicenter of the earthquake. An algorithm was developed to compute the Value of the Relative Density(VRD) representing the relative density of lineament from the map. The VRD is the lineament density of each map grid divided by the maximum density value from the map. As such, it is a quantified value that indicates the concentration level of the lineament density across the area impacted by the earthquake. Using this algorithm, the VRD calculated at the earthquake epicenter using the lineament's frequency, intersection, and length density maps ranged from approximately 0.60(min) to 0.90(max). However, because there were differences in mapped images such as those for solar altitude and azimuth, the mean of VRD was used rather than those categorized by the images. The results show that the average frequency of VRD was approximately 0.85, which was 21% higher than the intersection and length of VRD, demonstrating the close relationship that exists between lineament and the epicenter. Therefore, it is concluded that the density map analysis described in this study, based on lineament extraction, is valid and can be used as a primary data analysis tool for earthquake research in the future.

  • This study has tried to develop the modified DRASTIC Model by supplying the parameters, such as structural lineament density and land-use, into conventional DRASTIC model, and to predict the potential of groundwater contamination using GIS in Hwanam 2 District, Gyeonggi Province, Korea. Since the aquifers in Korea is generally through the joints of rock-mass in hydrogeological environment, lineament density affects to the behavior of groundwater and contaminated plumes directly, and land-use reflect the effect of point or non-point source of contamination indirectly. For the statistical analysis, lattice-layers of each parameter were generated, and then level of confidence was assessed by analyzing each correlation coefficient. Groundwater contamination potential map was achieved as a final result by comparing modified DRASTIC potential and the amount of pollutant load logically. The result suggest the predictability of contamination potential in a specified area in the respects of hydrogeological aspect and water quality.

  • This study is providing Modified DRASTIC Model to which lineament density and land use are added as additional factors using geographic infomation system(GIS). and then to evaluate groundwater contamination potential of Pyungtek-Gun area in Kyunggi-Do. In this study. the reason for using additional factors is because. in case of lineament density. when we consider that most of aquifer is bedrock aquifer in hydrogeologic environment of the Korea, lineament is very important to flow of groundwater and contamination material. and because land use can reflect indirectly impact of point or non_point source in study area. For statistical analysis. vector coverage per each factor is converted to grid layer and after each correlation coefficient between factors, covariance, variance. eigenvalue and eigenvector by principal component analysis of 3 direction. are calculated. correlation between factors is analyzed. Also after correlation coefficients between general DRASTIC layer and rated lineament density layer and between general DRASTIC layer and rated land use layer are calculated. final modified DRASTIC Model is constructed by using them with each weighting. when modified DRASTIC Model was compared with general DRASTIC Model, comtamination potential in modified DRASTIC Model is fairly detailed and consequently. vulnerable area which has high contamination potential could be presented concretly.

  • In Korea, MOCT and KOWACO published a standard for lineament map drawings, "The Handbook for the Drawing and Management of Hydrogeologic Map" in 2003. According to this guideline, hydrogeologic and related thematic maps should include characteristics of groundwater quality and quantity. These maps are generally drawn with ArcView GIS 3.x software. The activities of well notation on groundwater level map and Stiff diagram drawings on groundwater quality map require a great deal of efforts because hundreds or thousands of well data, water level data and hydrogeochemical data are produced through many kinds of investigations. As well, lineament density map is very important to survey and explore groundwater in a deep aquifer. In this study we developed some modules for well notation, Stiff diagram drawings, and lineament density value calculation with Avenue$^{TM}$ script and it was revealed that they can be very useful and easy for drawing groundwater thematic maps.

  • In this study, Ichon basin is selected as study area and regional analysis of geological structure are done by using lineament analysis. The factors which affects slope stability, are chosen, and integrated to database using GIS (Geoscientific Information System). Landsat TM band 4, 5 and 7 are choosen and processed by various image enhancement technique to analyse the regional geological lineaments. Spatial distribution of lineament is analysed through lineament density map and study area can be divided the eight structural domains. Considering environmental geological characteristics of study area, rating and weighting of each factors for slope stability analysis are determined and spatial analysis of regional slope stability is examined through overlaying technique of GIS. The result of areal distribution of slope stability shows that the most unstable area is all over Mt. Buksung, Mt. Daepo, Mt. Songrim and Mt. Yankak.
