  • In recent years, it has widely been studied on the light-weight composites for the purpose of the large space and thermal insulation of building structures. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the properties of light-weight composites made by binders as cement, resin and polymer cement slurry. The concrete composites are prepared with various conditions such as polymer-cement ratio, void-filling ratio, type of resin, filler content and light-weight aggregate content, tested for thermal conductivity. From the test results, the thermal conductivity of concrete composites with the binder of cement tends to decrease with increasing polymer-cement ratio, and to increase with increasing void-filling ratio. The thermal conductivity of concrete composites with the binder of resin are markedly affected by the light-weight aggregate content, type of resin and filler content. The composites made by polymer-modified concrete and polymer cement slurry have a good thermal insulation property. From the this study, we can recommend the proper mix proportions for thermal insulation Panel or concrete. Expecially. the thermal conductivity of concrete composites made by polyurethane resin is almost the same as that of the conventional expanded polystyrene resin.

  • Grouted sleeve splice (GSS) is an effective type of connection applied in the precast concrete structures as it has the advantages of rapidly assembly and reliable strength. To decrease the weight and cost of vertical rebar connection in precast shear walls, a light-weight sleeve is designed according to the thick-cylinder theory. Mechanical behaviour of the light-weighted GSS is investigated through experimental analysis. Two failure modes, such as rebar fracture failure and rebar pull-out failure, are found. The load-displacement curves exhibit four different stages: elastic stage, yield stage, strengthening stage, and necking stage. The bond strength between the rebar and the grout increases gradually from outer position to inner position of the sleeve, and it reaches the maximum value at the centre of the anchorage length. A finite element model predicting the mechanical properties of the light-weighted GSS is developed based on the Concrete Damage Plasticity (CDP) model and the Brittle Cracking (BC) model. The effect of the rebar anchorage length is significant, while the increase of the thickness of sleeve and the grout strength are not very effective. A model for estimating ultimate load, including factors of inner diameter of sleeves, anchorage length, and rebar diameter, is proposed. The proposed model shows good agreement with various test data.

  • The harvesting and export of Canadian ginseng from the cool, shady hardwood forests of southern Canada can be traced to 1796. Because of its high dollar value and diminishing woodland supplies it was decided in 1896 that it should be cultivated under wood lath screens. Present day economics dictate changes in production techniques to allow for a decreasing supply of expensive labour. Traditional wooden lath screens have a surface area of wood of 70 per cent and permit light penetration of only about 18 per cent. Experimental woven black polypropylene shade has an estimated surface area of 72 per cent and permits light pentration of about 28 per cent. While differences in air and leaf temperatures under the two shade structures can be measured it is doubtful if these are great enough to cause differences in plant growth under the two structures. Shade grown ginseng had a low fresh and dry weight and total chlorophyll content (ratio of a to b was 3 to 1) comparable to other shade species. There was no differences in fresh and dry weight and chlorophyll content of leaves from plants grown under the two shade structures. Maximum net photosynthesis of leaves was 0.175 g $CO_2\;m^{-2}\;hr^{-1}$ and light saturation level was about $200{\mu}E\;m^{-2}\;s^{-1},$ or about 10 per cent of full sunlight.

  • Aluminum foam is one of the representative light-weight materials. In this study we analyzed the mechanical properties of the aluminum foam structures. Aluminum materials with pores have novel mechanical characteristics such as flame retardancy, damping, and energy absorption which are superior to those of polymer foam. Furthermore its reusable properties draw considerable interests. General properties, energy and acoustic absorption will be investigated and future research issues such as binding techniques of foam materials with other structures will be discussed through foam application examples.

  • Recently, the research of FRP bar as an alternative reinforcing material in reinforced concrete structures has increased to get an innovative solution to the corrosion problem. In addition to the noncorrosive nature of FRP materials, they also have a high strength-to-weight ratio. Therefore, when light weight concrete reinforced with FRP bar is used in marine environment, for instance floating structures, some advantages can be expected. But researches for the light weight concrete structure using FRP bar as a flexural reinforcement are limited to date. In this paper, the concrete shear contribution of the light weight concrete beam reinforced with GFRP bar was studied. Experiment for beams varying concrete compressive strengths and flexural reinforcement ratios was conducted and analysed. The test results showed that 75% of values obtained from proposed equation in preceding research were well agreed with the test results and were better results than the one predicted by the ACI 440.1R-06 code.

  • Honeycomb structures have advantages in weight reduction with stiffness increment. As far as noise is concerned, however a light aluminum structure, instead of a steel frame, should have an equivalent mass density in order to maintain sound insulation performance. In this paper, an evaluation of a material effect on noise has been examined.

  • In this paper, a theorectical approach is studied to predict structural performances and weight-reduction rates of hybrid bodyshells in case that the materials of roof structures are substituted. To determine other light-weight materials to be substituted for the original roof materials, bending and twisting deformations are considered under constant stiffness and strength conditions, which derive some new weight-reduction indices from a structural performance point of view. The indices derived to estimate the weight-reduction can be utilized as a good criterion at the conceptual design for material substitution of the roofs.

  • In order to investigate the dynamic impact resistance of steel fiber reinforced full light-weight concretes, we implemented drop weight impact test on a total of 6 reinforced beams with 0, 1 and 2%, steel fiber volume fraction. The purpose of this test was to determine the failure modes of beams under different impact energies. Then, we compared and analyzed the time-history curves of impact force, midspan displacement and reinforcement strain. The obtained results indicated that the deformations of samples and their steel fibers were proportional to impact energy, impact force, and impact time. Within reasonable ranges of parameter values, the effects of impact size and impact time were similar for all volumetric contents of steel fibers, but they significantly affected the crack propagation mechanism and damage characteristics of samples. Increase of the volumetric contents of steel fibers not only effectively reduced the midspan displacement and reinforcement strain of concrete samples, but also inhibited crack initiation and propagation such that cracks were concentrated in the midspan areas of beams and the frequency of cracks at supports was reduced. As a result, the tensile strength and impact resistance of full light-weight concrete beams were significantly improved.

  • Machine tools of high-speed and high-precision are required for various fields of industry such as semiconductor, automobile, mold fabrication and so on. Light-weight machine tool structure is essential for reduction of production time through rapid transportation. Also, high damping capacity of the structure is required to obtain precise products without vibration during manufacturing. Composite materials have high potential for machine tool structures due to its high specific stiffness and good damping characteristics. In this study, the design and the manufacture of a hybrid machine tool structure using composite materials was attempted and the damping capacity was investigated experimentally.

  • There are several types of foundations for light-weight structures, such as low story buildings, on soft clay deposits. Those foundations, such as piled raft, compensated foundation, mat foundation, floating foundation are commonly used rather then end-bearing piles to get more benefits on the construction and cost savings. In this study, settlement behaviors are computed and compared for several types of foundations on soft clay deposits. Also, theoretical expressions of parameters for piled raft system were provided with co-relations for design purposes. The predictions of settlements of piled rafts foundation are proposed based on the pile dimensions and design loads. From this study, the piled raft foundations is more benefits for reducing the settlement of clay deposits, and it is found that the piled raft system is applicable and effective on thick clay deposits, and that differential settlements of the foundation should be managed by designing the configuration of pile lengths.
