  • In this paper, a robust and simple structured light sensory system has been studied to endow mobile robots with the ability of navigating in real world. A mobile robot with this sensor can be applied in two ways: first, real time navigation in 3-dimensional world, second, modeling and recognition of environment. Range data obtained with this sensor are fairy accurate, and the data aquisition speed is satisfactory. Experiments in diverse situation show effectiveness of the structured light sensor for the mobile robot.

  • A sensor fusion scheme for mobile robot environment recognition that incorporates range data and contour data is proposed. Ultrasonic sensor provides coarse spatial description but guarantees open space with no obstacle within sonic cone with relatively high belief. Laser structured light system provides detailed contour description of environment but prone to light noise and is easily affected by surface reflectivity. Overall fusion process is composed of two stages: Noise elimination and belief updates. Dempster Shafer´s evidential reasoning is applied at each stage. Open space estimation from sonar range measurements brings elimination of noisy lines from laser sensor. Comparing actual sonar data to the simulated sonar data enables ...

  • The plant pigment proteins phytochromes are a molecular light sensor or switch for photomorphogenesis involving a variety of growth and developmental responses of plants to red and far-red wavelength light. Underscoring the photomorphogenesis mediated by phytochromes is the light signal transduction at molecular and cellular levels. For example, a number of genes activated by the phytochrome-mediated signal transduction cascade have been identified and characterized, especially in Arabidopsis thaliana. The light sensor/switch function of phytochromes are based on photochromism of the covalently linked tetrapyrrole chromophore between the two photoreversible forms, Pr and Pfr. The photochromism of phytochromes involves photoisomerization of the tetrapyrrole chromophore. The "photosensor" Pr-form ("switch off" conformation) of phytochromes strongly absorbs 660 nm red light, whereas the "switch on" Pfr-conformation preferentially absorbs 730 nm far-red light. The latter is generally considered to be responsible for eliciting transduction cascades of the red light signal for various responses of plants to red light including positive or negative expression of light-responsive genes in plant nuclei and chloroplasts. In this paper, we discuss the structure-function of phytochromes in plant growth and development, with a few examples of biotechnological implications.

  • This paper presents the development of smart counting system that is proper for grains with uneven unit weight or shape. This device can detect the small differences of a light beam and count the pulse from wave shape control, when the grain is going on the light screen, which is made by the light beam screen sensor. It can, different from the former conventional device, distinct the uneven grains for counting detect, by using the dedicated hardware and the software algorithm of the light sensor.

  • This paper addresses development of the ultra-light analog sun sensors for small satellite applications. The sun sensor is suitable for attitude determination for small satellite because of its small, light, low-cost, and low power consumption characteristics. The sun sensor is designed, manufactured and characteristic-tested with the target requirements of ${\pm}60^{\circ}$ FOV (Field of View) and pointing accuracy of ${\pm}2^{\circ}$. Since the sun sensor has nonlinear characteristics between output measurement voltage and incident angle of sunlight, a higher order calibration equation is required for error correction. The error was calculated by using a polynomial calibration equation that was computed by the least square method obtained from the measured voltages vs. angles characteristics. Finally, the accuracies of 1-axis and 2-axes sun sensors, which consist of 2 detectors, are compared.

  • The efficacy improvement of the light emitting diode (LED) was studied for the realization of small-size, low power consumption, and highly sensitive bio-sensor instrument. The performance of the LED with Mg delta-doping at the interface of AlGaN/GaN super-lattice in p type cladding layer was simulated. The device with Mg delta-doping showed improved current, radiative recombination rate, electroluminescence, and light output power compared to the conventional LED structure. Under the bias condition of 5 V, the improved device exhibited 20.8% increase in the light output power. This is attributed to the increment of hole concentration from stable ionization of Mg in p type cladding layer. This result is expected to be used for the miniaturization, power saving, and sensitivity improvement of the bio-sensor system.

  • The easy scalability and low cost of range-free localization algorithms have led to their wide attention and application in node localization of wireless sensor networks. However, the existing range-free localization algorithms still have problems, such as large cumulative errors and poor localization performance. To solve these problems, an incremental strategy-based residual regression network is proposed for node localization in wireless sensor networks. The algorithm predicts the coordinates of the nodes to be solved by building a deep learning model and fine-tunes the prediction results by regression based on the intersection of the communication range between the predicted and real coordinates and the loss function, which improves the localization performance of the algorithm. Moreover, a correction scheme is proposed to correct the augmented data in the incremental strategy, which reduces the cumulative error generated during the algorithm localization. The analysis through simulation experiments demonstrates that our proposed algorithm has strong robustness and has obvious advantages in localization performance compared with other algorithms.

  • The auto-illumination controller for office, residence, and so on was studied. The system consists of parts of a power supply, a signal oscillator, a lamp controller and two kinds of sensor. The lamp controller has two thyristors triggered by the IR sensor(SCRI) and CdS sensor(SCR2) respectively, When the illuminance around this system is higher than operating value of its sensor, lamp is turned off automatically. Otherwise, the light of lamp gets dim by CdS sensor. In case IR sensor senses the body heat of people around itself, the illuminance of the lamp gets maximum. The illuminance of the lamp can be changed dimmly by control of the variable resistor (RV) connected with SCR2 in series. The turning - on time of the lamp can be also controlled using a variable resistor(Rt) connected with a signal oscillator in parallel. Changing resistance Rt changes the time constant(.tau.), which triggers the gate of SCR2. Though people left the surrounding of lamp, the lamp keeps light for a while.

  • A fiberoptic sensor using a low-coherence SLD as a light source has been studied. The sensor system employing an intrinsic fiber Fabry-Peort interferometer as a sensing tip and a fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer as a processing one, overcomes the ambiguous reading caused by the highly periodic natrue of conventional high-precision interferometric sensors and provides unambiguous identification of the desired phase among several candidates on the transfer function of an interferometric signal. A tentative application to the temperature sensor shows the potential that the fiberoptic sensor has a side-dynamic range of $0-900^{\circ}C$ as well as reasonable resolution higher than $0.1^{\circ}C$ without ambiguity. Due to the inherent property of the optical fiber itself and the intrinsic fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer, the proposed fiberoptic sensor will give obvious benefits when it is applied to harsh environments to monitor some physical parameters such as temperature, strain, pressure and vibration.
